The modern town of Luxor occupies the Eastern part of the ancient Waset or Thebes. Local ferries regularly cross to the Western bank of the Nile where the Mortuary Temple's of the New Kingdom Pharaohs form part of a huge necropolis that includes the Valley of the Kings. The small museum at Luxor was opened in 1975. In 1989 a spectacular find of perfectly preserved statues at the Luxor Temple led to the designing of a new gallery specially to house them.
