A
IT’s prestigious Management programs have been
ranked among the top global and regional pro-
grams, with its Master’s program in Agribusiness
Management being ranked 14th globally. Most AIT pro-
grams have improved their rankings in the latest Eduniversal
Best Masters, which was released on 24 December 2013.
Three AIT programs are ranked among the top programs
in the world, while five programs are ranked among the
top programs in Far East Asia. In eight sectors, AIT pro-
grams have been rated as best in Thailand. The three pro-
grams that make it to the global top include Master’s in
Agribusiness Management (14th in the Agribusiness and
Food Industry Management Sector, third in Asia, and first
in the Far East Asia and Thailand). AITs MBA program
has been ranked 54th in the field of Entrepreneurship,
and 58th in the field of Sustainable Development and
Environmental Management.
AIT’s Master’s program in Management of Technology is
rated 11th in Far East Asia in the sector “Engineering and
Project Management”, while its Executive MBA program
is ranked 13th in Far East Asia. The Professional Master’s
in Banking and Finance is rated 13th in Far EastAsia in the
sector “Corporate Finance,” the MBA full time program
is rated 16th among MBA programs in Far East Asia, and
19th in the sector “General Management.” All AIT pro-
grams come out as the best programs in Thailand.

Newly appointed Vice President for
Resource Development (VPRD), Prof.
Kazuo Yamamoto has unveiled a pro-
posal for establishing Alliance for
Global Sustainability Asia at AIT.
The Alliance for Global Sustainability
(AGS) will establish a strong network
in the region, help in obtaining faculty
secondments and student scholarships,
besides helping strengthen the AIT
brand, Prof. Yamamoto said.
AGS is an international partnership be-
tween four of the world’s leading sci-
ence and technology universities – ETH
Zurich, MIT, The University of Tokyo,
and Chalmers University of Technol-
ogy. Since its creation in 1997, theAGS
has drawn on the strength of its partners
to develop capacity and new models for
integrated research, education and out-
reach.
Prof. Yamamoto stated that AGS Asia)
will link with AGS, but it will be based
in AIT, and it will network with Asian
academic and research institutions,
governments and industry. Prof. Ya-
mamoto, who has worked as the Sec-
retary of AGS when it was established,
added that he was in consultation with
his colleagues at the University of To-
kyo about AGS Asia, and that they had
agreed to extend the concept to AIT.

New Vice President
unveils proposal for
Alliance for Global
Sustainability Asia
Prof. Kazuo Yamamoto has been appointed as Interim Vice President
for Resource Development at AIT. His appointment was approved at
the meeting of the AIT Board of Trustees held on 16 January 2014.
The appointment shall be effective from 1 January 2014 to 31 De-
cember 2014. Professor Yamamoto will be partially seconded to this
position by the University of Tokyo.

Norway unveils third tranche of
scholarships for Myanmar students

The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (NMFA) unveiled its
third tranche of scholarships for students from Myanmar to study at
AIT. In an elegant ceremony organized at the Royal Norwegian Em-
bassy atYangon on 30 January 2014, theAmbassador of the Norway,
H.E. Ms. Anne Ollestad, announced the commencement of scholar-
ships for Myanmar students to undertake postgraduate studies atAIT.
The Ambassador remarked that education is the key to development
in Myanmar, andAIThas an important role to play in offering knowl-
edge and skills to students from Myanmar. “I am hopeful and con-
fident that the students awarded scholarships through the program
will return to Myanmar after their studies where their knowledge and
competence is best suited, be it within the Government or in a pri-
vate business,” the Ambassador said in her brief remarks. Later, the
Norwegian Ambassador; H.E. Dr. Sahas Bunditkul, former Deputy
Prime Minister of Thailand and member of AIT’s Board of Trust-
ees; and Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, Interim President, AIT ad-
dressed a press conference.

ORIENTATION
Students from 15 countries join AIT’s January 2014 batch
Fifty-six students from 15 countries have joined AIT
in the January 2014 batch. Welcoming them at the
Orientation program held on 7 January 2014, AIT’s
Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs, Prof.
Sivanappan Kumar offered them felicitations on be-
half of the Institute.
Stating that AIT is committed to the Sustainable De-
velopment of the Asia-Pacific region, Prof. Kumar
exhorted the students to avail of the myriad range of
educational, research and outreach programs at the
Institute. “The success of AIT is measured by the
accomplishment of its students,” Prof. Kumar said,
as he enumerated the accomplishments of the Insti-
tute’s illustrious alumni. He suggested that besides
academics, students should get involved in numerous
activities such as “Greening of the AIT campus.”
The Vice President for Academic Affairs also urged
students to maintain high standards of ethical con-
duct. He asked students to get acquainted with the
AIT faculty to make the most of the immense op-
portunities offered by the Institute. Prof. Kumar re-
marked that research and outreach are strengths of
AIT, and hoped that students will find the Institute
“exciting, rewarding and stimulating.”

Dr. Fredric William Swierczek
Dr. Fredric William Swierczek appointed Director of AIT Center
Vietnam (AITCV)
Dr. Fredric W. Swierczek has been appointed as the new Director
of AIT Center Vietnam (AITCV). His appointment will be effec-
tive from 21 January 2014 till the end of December 2015.
Dr. Swierczek takes over from the outgoing AITCV Director Dr.
Amrit Bart, has assumed a postion at University of Georgia. Dr.
Swierczek is a founding faculty member of the AIT School of
Management (SOM) and has previously served as the Director of
AITV in 2007. Dr. Swierczek has extensive experience working
in Vietnam having served as the Coordinator of the International
Executive MBA Program in Vietnam. He served as Associate
Professor in SOM from 1989-2006.

nology (SET).Dr. Nitin Kumar Tripathi
Dr. Surachet completed his Ph.D. in Transportation
Systems Engineering from Utah State University in
2007. He obtained his master degree from AIT, in the
field of Infrastructure Planning and Management in
2001, and Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Chu-
lalongkorn University in 1999. Dr. Surachet is an ex-
pert in the area of transportation planning and traffic
engineering, with a proven track record in researching,
consulting, managing, and teaching; in both public and
private sectors. Prior to joining AIT, he was the Chief
of Transport System Research and Development Sec-
tion at the Expressway Authority of Thailand.
on 24 December 2013, and the approval of the AIT
Board of Trustees at its meeting on 16 January 2014.
Dr. Tripathi joined AIT as an Associate Professor
in the Remote Sensing and Geographic Informa-
tion System (RS&GIS) Field of Study (FoS) of the
School of Engineering and Technology (SET) in
2000. He obtained both his Master’s in Technology
(Remote Sensing) and Doctorate (Remote Sens-
ing and GIS) from Indian Institute of Technology
(I.I.T.), Kanpur, India.

AIT alumnus appointed
Deputy Minister in
Vietnam
An alumnus of AIT, Dr. Cao Quoc
Hung has been appointed as Deputy
Minister, Ministry of Industry and
Trade in Vietnam.
Dr. Hung is a graduate of AIT having
completed his Doctoral program in En-
gineering in Energy Technology from
the School of Environment, Resources
and Development (SERD) in 1998. He
has worked on the topic “Sectoral En-
ergy Demand Analysis and Long-Term
Demand Forecasting for the S.R. Viet-
nam.”
Before being appointed as Deputy
Minister of Industry and Trade, Dr.
Cao Quoc Hung have held various im-
portant positions in the government in-
cluding Deputy Director of Internation-
al Cooperation Department (Ministry
of Industry), Director of International
Cooperation Department (Ministry of
Industry and Trade), and Deputy Direc-
tor of General Department of Energy
(Ministry of Industry and Trade).
Mr. Bernardo Gadlan
Passing Away
Mr. Bernardo Gadlan,Administra-
tive and Finance Officer, Media
and Communications Unit (MCU)
passed away at the age of 52.
Fondly known as “Bernie”, he
served as a point person for MCU
dealing with faculty, staff, stu-
dents, administration and external
clients. A condolence meeting was
FAO teams up with AIT, signs MoU
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and AIT have signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop innovative ap-
proaches in research, education and capacity building in the field of
food and agriculture.
The MoU was signed by Mr. Hiroyuki Konuma, Assistance Direc-
tor-General and Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific,
and Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, Interim President, Asian Insti-
tute of Technology (AIT), at FAO’s Regional Office forAsia and the
Pacific on 10 January 2013.
Stating thatAIT is one of the most important institutions which deals
with regional issues, Mr. Konuma remarked that the role played by
AIT is “very highly recognized.”

which was attended by seniorAIT officials. Bernie’s funeral cer-
emony was held on 21 January 2014 at Rangsit-Klong Si Meth-

It says: “A group of academics and business leaders says a new cross-party
body should set long-term educational goals protected from the electoral cy-
cle. They also want more emphasis on team working and problem-solving, and
a baccalaureate system at A-level.”

Board Chairman outlines AIT Road Map
A full-day session of AIT’s faculty and staff deliber-
ated on theAIT Institutional Road Map, which was or-
ganized under the aegis of the Chairman ofAIT Board
of Trustees, H.E. Dr. Subin Pinkayan.
“The AIT Road Map is an operational guideline for
2014-2018,” Dr. Subin remarked at the beginning of
the workshop held on 22 January 2013 at the AIT
Conference Center. The AIT Road Map, which was
approved at the meeting of the AIT Board of Trustees
held on 16 January 2014, was presented to the AIT
community, which began its deliberations on opera-
tionalizing an action plan.
“I identify myself as a member of the AIT community
and I have come to work with you,” is how the Board
Chairman described the day’s workshop. Welcom-
ing Dr. Subin, AIT’s Interim President Prof. Worsak
Kanok-Nukulchai remarked that this was the first time
that the Board Chairman has come down to work with
the entire AIT community.

  • 1. 1FEBRUARY 2014 Asian Institute of Technology FEBRUARY 2014 A IT’s prestigious Management programs have been ranked among the top global and regional pro- grams, with its Master’s program in Agribusiness Management being ranked 14th globally. Most AIT pro- grams have improved their rankings in the latest Eduniversal Best Masters, which was released on 24 December 2013. Three AIT programs are ranked among the top programs in the world, while five programs are ranked among the top programs in Far East Asia. In eight sectors, AIT pro- grams have been rated as best in Thailand. The three pro- grams that make it to the global top include Master’s in Agribusiness Management (14th in the Agribusiness and Food Industry Management Sector, third in Asia, and first in the Far East Asia and Thailand). AITs MBA program has been ranked 54th in the field of Entrepreneurship, and 58th in the field of Sustainable Development and Environmental Management. AIT’s Master’s program in Management of Technology is rated 11th in Far East Asia in the sector “Engineering and Project Management”, while its Executive MBA program is ranked 13th in Far East Asia. The Professional Master’s in Banking and Finance is rated 13th in Far EastAsia in the sector “Corporate Finance,” the MBA full time program is rated 16th among MBA programs in Far East Asia, and 19th in the sector “General Management.” All AIT pro- grams come out as the best programs in Thailand.   • 2. 2FEBRUARY 2014 RECENT NEWS / HAPPENINGS AT AIT Newly appointed Vice President for Resource Development (VPRD), Prof. Kazuo Yamamoto has unveiled a pro- posal for establishing Alliance for Global Sustainability Asia at AIT. The Alliance for Global Sustainability (AGS) will establish a strong network in the region, help in obtaining faculty secondments and student scholarships, besides helping strengthen the AIT brand, Prof. Yamamoto said. AGS is an international partnership be- tween four of the world’s leading sci- ence and technology universities – ETH Zurich, MIT, The University of Tokyo, and Chalmers University of Technol- ogy. Since its creation in 1997, theAGS has drawn on the strength of its partners to develop capacity and new models for integrated research, education and out- reach. Prof. Yamamoto stated that AGS Asia) will link with AGS, but it will be based in AIT, and it will network with Asian academic and research institutions, governments and industry. Prof. Ya- mamoto, who has worked as the Sec- retary of AGS when it was established, added that he was in consultation with his colleagues at the University of To- kyo about AGS Asia, and that they had agreed to extend the concept to AIT. Prof. Kazuo Yamamoto New Vice President unveils proposal for Alliance for Global Sustainability Asia Prof. Kazuo Yamamoto has been appointed as Interim Vice President for Resource Development at AIT. His appointment was approved at the meeting of the AIT Board of Trustees held on 16 January 2014. The appointment shall be effective from 1 January 2014 to 31 De- cember 2014. Professor Yamamoto will be partially seconded to this position by the University of Tokyo. Prof. Yamamoto appointed Interim Vice President for Resource Development Norway unveils third tranche of scholarships for Myanmar students From left: H.E. The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (NMFA) unveiled its third tranche of scholarships for students from Myanmar to study at AIT. In an elegant ceremony organized at the Royal Norwegian Em- bassy atYangon on 30 January 2014, theAmbassador of the Norway, H.E. Ms. Anne Ollestad, announced the commencement of scholar- ships for Myanmar students to undertake postgraduate studies atAIT. The Ambassador remarked that education is the key to development in Myanmar, andAIThas an important role to play in offering knowl- edge and skills to students from Myanmar. “I am hopeful and con- fident that the students awarded scholarships through the program will return to Myanmar after their studies where their knowledge and competence is best suited, be it within the Government or in a pri- vate business,” the Ambassador said in her brief remarks. Later, the Norwegian Ambassador; H.E. Dr. Sahas Bunditkul, former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand and member of AIT’s Board of Trust- ees; and Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, Interim President, AIT ad- dressed a press conference.
  • 3. 3FEBRUARY 2014 ORIENTATION Students from 15 countries join AIT’s January 2014 batch Fifty-six students from 15 countries have joined AIT in the January 2014 batch. Welcoming them at the Orientation program held on 7 January 2014, AIT’s Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs, Prof. Sivanappan Kumar offered them felicitations on be- half of the Institute. Stating that AIT is committed to the Sustainable De- velopment of the Asia-Pacific region, Prof. Kumar exhorted the students to avail of the myriad range of educational, research and outreach programs at the Institute. “The success of AIT is measured by the accomplishment of its students,” Prof. Kumar said, as he enumerated the accomplishments of the Insti- tute’s illustrious alumni. He suggested that besides academics, students should get involved in numerous activities such as “Greening of the AIT campus.” The Vice President for Academic Affairs also urged students to maintain high standards of ethical con- duct. He asked students to get acquainted with the AIT faculty to make the most of the immense op- portunities offered by the Institute.   • 4. 4FEBRUARY 2014 RECENT NEWS / PEOPLE Dr. Surachet Pravinvongvuth Dr. Nitin Kumar Tripathi promoted Professor Dr. Nitin Ku- mar Tripathi has been pro- moted to the rank of Profes- sor at AIT. He was promoted following the endorsement of his promotion at the meeting of the AIT Execu- tive Committee Dr. Fredric William Swierczek Dr. Fredric William Swierczek appointed Director of AIT Center Vietnam (AITCV) Dr. Fredric W. Swierczek has been appointed as the new Director of AIT Center Vietnam (AITCV). His appointment will be effec- tive from 21 January 2014 till the end of December 2015. Dr. Swierczek takes over from the outgoing AITCV Director Dr. Amrit Bart, has assumed a postion at University of Georgia. Dr. Swierczek is a founding faculty member of the AIT School of Management (SOM) and has previously served as the Director of AITV in 2007. Dr. Swierczek has extensive experience working in Vietnam having served as the Coordinator of the International Executive MBA Program in Vietnam. He served as Associate Professor in SOM from 1989-2006. Dr. Surachet Pravinvongyuth joins Assistant Professor Dr. Surachet Pravinvongvuth has joined as As- sistant Profes- sor in the field of Transporta- tion Engineering (TRE) in AIT’s School of Engi- neering and Tech- nology (SET).Dr. Nitin Kumar Tripathi Dr. Surachet completed his Ph.D. in Transportation Systems Engineering from Utah State University in 2007. He obtained his master degree from AIT, in the field of Infrastructure Planning and Management in 2001, and Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Chu- lalongkorn University in 1999. Dr. Surachet is an ex- pert in the area of transportation planning and traffic engineering, with a proven track record in researching, consulting, managing, and teaching; in both public and private sectors. Prior to joining AIT, he was the Chief of Transport System Research and Development Sec- tion at the Expressway Authority of Thailand. on 24 December 2013, and the approval of the AIT Board of Trustees at its meeting on 16 January 2014. Dr. Tripathi joined AIT as an Associate Professor in the Remote Sensing and Geographic Informa- tion System (RS&GIS) Field of Study (FoS) of the School of Engineering and Technology (SET) in 2000. He obtained both his Master’s in Technology (Remote Sensing) and Doctorate (Remote Sens- ing and GIS) from Indian Institute of Technology (I.I.T.), Kanpur, India.
  • 5. 5FEBRUARY 2014 RECENT NEWS / HAPPENINGS AT AIT / PEOPLE AIT alumnus appointed Deputy Minister in Vietnam An alumnus of AIT, Dr. Cao Quoc Hung has been appointed as Deputy Minister, Ministry of Industry and Trade in Vietnam. Dr. Hung is a graduate of AIT having completed his Doctoral program in En- gineering in Energy Technology from the School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD) in 1998. He has worked on the topic “Sectoral En- ergy Demand Analysis and Long-Term Demand Forecasting for the S.R. Viet- nam.” Before being appointed as Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Dr. Cao Quoc Hung have held various im- portant positions in the government in- cluding Deputy Director of Internation- al Cooperation Department (Ministry of Industry), Director of International Cooperation Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), and Deputy Direc- tor of General Department of Energy (Ministry of Industry and Trade). Mr. Bernardo Gadlan Passing Away Mr. Bernardo Gadlan,Administra- tive and Finance Officer, Media and Communications Unit (MCU) passed away at the age of 52. Fondly known as “Bernie”, he served as a point person for MCU dealing with faculty, staff, stu- dents, administration and external clients. A condolence meeting was FAO teams up with AIT, signs MoU Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and AIT have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop innovative ap- proaches in research, education and capacity building in the field of food and agriculture. The MoU was signed by Mr. Hiroyuki Konuma, Assistance Direc- tor-General and Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific, and Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, Interim President, Asian Insti- tute of Technology (AIT), at FAO’s Regional Office forAsia and the Pacific on 10 January 2013. Board Chairman outlines AIT Road Map A full-day session of AIT’s faculty and staff deliber- ated on theAIT Institutional Road Map, which was or- ganized under the aegis of the Chairman ofAIT Board of Trustees, H.E. Dr. Subin Pinkayan. “The AIT Road Map is an operational guideline for 2014-2018,” Dr. Subin remarked at the beginning of the workshop held on 22 January 2013 at the AIT Conference Center. The AIT Road Map, which was approved at the meeting of the AIT Board of Trustees held on 16 January 2014, was presented to the AIT community, which began its deliberations on opera- tionalizing an action plan. “I identify myself as a member of the AIT community and I have come to work with you,” is how the Board Chairman described the day’s workshop. Welcom- ing Dr. Subin, AIT’s Interim President Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai remarked that this was the first time that the Board Chairman has come down to work with the entire AIT community.
