7 What are texts and signs?* * * * In this chapter we consider the uses of media in: ■ ■'i What is representation? What is the relationship between representation and power? How does representation work as a social process? • Making sense of social reality • Crafting and mediating identities and social life • Managing power relationships. tfimWWW MATTERS BECAUSE HOW WE UNDERSTAND THE WORLD AFFECTS HOW WE ACT TN THE WORLD. MLCIA ANDSCXIETY REPRESENTATION AND POWER 44 i Representation is the social process of making and exchanging meaning (Hall 1997). Media do not simply reflect or mirror reality. Media are social processes through which people interact with each other to construct a view of reality. These social interactions unfold between people with different levels of access to economic, cultural and symbolic resources, institutions and rituals. By social construction of reality, we mean that reality as we understand it is produced out of social relationships between people. There is a real world out there, with real material things in it and events that actually happen, but we can only come to understand that world out of the social process of interacting with each other. There is no understanding of reality outside our social interactions and cultural practices. The ‘re’ prefix in representation is important. It is a process of re-presenting reality to others. Representations are social productions: their meaning depends on who creates and circulates them, the cultural schema within which that circulation takes place, and who receives them. Some people have more power to shape not only particular meanings, but also the contexts within which meanings are produced, distributed and received. Media representations shape how people think about and act in the world. Representations also have significant affective dimensions. They anticipate, construct and amplify how we feel about things. They reinforce or challenge our attitudes. They arouse our emotions: fear, passion, anxieties. Representation is not simply a rational process of creating and circulating inert bits of information. The question is not always about whether or not representations are accurate, but how they subtly frame events in ways that position individuals in the social order. We are interested in how representations mediate relations between people. Relations between people are complex and messy, and are constituted as much by how we feel, and our relative level of power towards each other, as they are by empirical facts. Representation is a process embedded in how we make sense of the world and in doing so it shapes the world. Representation does this subtly and over a long period of time. Images and narratives do not have meaning on their own. They only become meaningful in relation to other images and narratives that have preceded them or that they are produced in relation to. As groups of people attempt to ‘fix’ particular re.

Q's for help group A Aim for 500 words minimum, and for 300 words for essay B. group A 1. Why is Mead’s model of human existence incapable of accounting for conflict? Group B 2. Write about personality A.First explain the authors point view then explain your point of view….. Opinion agree or disagree GROUP A Mead’s model of human existence George Herbert Mead model of human existence is a theory based on social psychology. A collection of Mead's work dealing with thinking, behaviorism social consciousness, and social control was compiled by Charles Morris in 1936. This edited work tried to explain the nature of human existence in a world full of conflicts. Much of Meads work focused on self -development and human existence within the social realm. An individual thought is only relevant if interpreted by other people. Thus a person existing alone could not have relevant thought and he will not be in conflict with any other person. Mead interpreted human existence through symbolic interactionism. Human is always in constant reaction with the world. A person interacts with the world consciously. A conscious individual is able to interpret the social world as he interacts with other people. Thus, human interactions are intentional and can be controlled. If the interactions are fair and satisfactory to different actors they enhance social interactions. These social interactions can result in a conflict if one actor is biased or has an ill motive. According to mead social interactions are successful through communication. He classified communication between people as social behaviorism. Human actions are given meaning through communication. An individual is able to pass a message to another through the use of gestures and words. Social behaviorists value the role of the mind in communication. The mind plans actions and executes them through different body parts. Social interactions are formed as a result of human thought. The mind and the human body work simultaneously to achieve an action. The action is then communicated to other people through a language. George Herbert Mead identified the process of communication. According to him the communication process involves two phases; gestures and language. Communication through gestures is unconscious. Gestures are mostly used by animals. In most cases the involved animals don’t respond because they don’t perceive them accordingly. When used by human beings they must be put under a certain context so that they can be understood. Gestures form the basis of language. Communication through language is conscious. The involved people can understand one another. Communication is dynamic. Using language for communication is core for social interaction. Communication enables individuals to socialize and minimize conflicts It keeps on changing as people interact. Language evolves from simple forms to complex forms as social interaction advance. A developed speech enables people to communicate through ...

Explore how multimodal embeddings work with Milvus. We will see how you can explore a popular multimodal model - CLIP - on a popular dataset - CIFAR 10. You use CLIP to create the embeddings of the input data, Milvus to store the embeddings of the multimodal data (sometimes termed “multimodal embeddings”), and we will then explore the embeddings.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.
