 Are the buildings, structures or the site of historical importance
and interest
 India is one of the ancient living civilisation and thus land is
marked by the monuments that speak about the glorious past
of the land.
Monuments
 Commissioned by the Emperor Ashoka in 3rd century BCE.
 One of the oldest stone structures in India, and an important
monument of Indian Architecture.
THE STUPA OF SANCHI
 Located in the Sanchi town of
Madhya Pradesh, near Bhopal
 It is listed in the UNESCO list
of World Heritage sites
 Constructed to preserve and
spread the Buddhist
philosophy.
 Sanchi has been protecting
beautiful and sacred
architectural wonders
 It is an example of
technological, architectural as
well as of art of the Mauryan
period.
THE STUPA OF SANCHI
 Located in Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh
 Sarnath is an important place in the history Buddhism.
 Buddha gave his first sermon at this place
DHAMEKHA STUPA, SARNATH
 Built by the great
Mauryan king
Ashoka in 249 BCE
 It’s a major tourist
attraction and
Buddhist pilgrims
from different
countries visit this
place
 It is shortly going to
be listed in UNESCO
world heritage site

THE AJANTACAVES
 Constructed in the 2nd century BCE.
 Located in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra.
 Carved in the massive rock block

 Famous for its cave paintings
 Most famous painting is of
Bodhisattva Padmapani
 Konark Sun Temple is a 13th-century CE sun temple at
Konark, in Odisha
 Constructed by Narasimha Deva I of the Eastern Ganga
Dynasty about 1250 CE.
KONARK SUN TEMPLE
• The temple is a monumental representation of the sun
God Surya's chariot; its 24 wheels are decorated with
symbolic designs and it is led by a team of six horses.
• Is a massive conception of artistic magnificence and
engineering dexterity
KONARK SUN TEMPLE
 There are three images of the Sun God at three different
sides of the temple, positioned in proper direction to
catch the rays of the sun at morning, noon and evening.
 'Konark' is a combination of two words 'Kona' and 'Arka'.
'Kona' means 'Corner' and 'Arka' means 'Sun', so when
combines it becomes 'Sun of the Corner'.
 Great poet Rabindranath Tagore wrote of Konark: "here
the language of stone surpasses the language of man.“
 Temple is listed amongst the UNESCO WORLD

HAMPI- THE ROYAL CAPITAL
 The city is well planned for water supply and defence mechanism
 Constructed in 14th century, European travellers have left a vivid
description about the city in their memoirs.
 It has many buildings such as lotus temple, Virupaksha &
Krishna temples, Hazara Ram temple, Vitthala temple, etc.
HAMPI - THE ROYAL CAPITAL
 Located in the Agra district of Uttar Pradesh.
 Constructed by Mughal Emperor Akbar.
 The city became the capital of Mughal Empire in 1571 CE
 The city has many buildings – Buland Darwaza, Panch Mahal,
Birbal Palace, etc.
FATEHPUR SIKRI
 Historic fort in the city of Delhi, built by Mughal Emperor
Shahjehan
 Constructed by using Red Sand stone
THE RED FORT
 Every year on the Independence day of India, the Prime
Minister hoists the Indian "tricolour flag" at the main
gate of the fort and delivers a nationally broadcast
speech from its ramparts
