What YOU should know about running for Chapter, Regional or International Office. Cynthia Mason, President Kentucky Regional Alumni Association Alpha Delta Chapter Hopkinsville Community College
Why take up Leadership? Taking up a leadership role in Phi Theta Kappa is the Pinnacle experience of a lifetime!  It is truly your opportunity to make a difference in the life of others, and in the world in which we live!
How Can I Be A Chapter Officer? Choosing to be a chapter officer can be very rewarding and your first step to being a lifelong leader. Never be afraid to “Reach Higher” for what you want! Look at where your passion lies and choose an office. There are many different opportunities waiting for someone to step up…why not let it be you!
What Type Of Office Do I Want To Hold? There are many different officer opportunities available in every chapter. Some chapters follow the traditional rolls, while others take more of a creative style. As we evolve as a society, so will our rolls in leadership. Most chapters have the positions of: President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Public Relations Honors In Action Rolls Chairpersons
Where Do I Begin? In order to serve as an officer you need to be an active member in your chapter. (That does not just mean that you paid dues). Being active means you participate in campus activities, community activities, regional activities or international activities. Familiarize yourself with the your chapters By-Laws and the International By-Laws. You need to know who we are and why we do what we do!
Continued Talk to your current and past officers. What were their rolls, how difficult is it to keep up with a full class schedule, etc. Talk with chapter members. Do they see you as officer material. Would they help you if you became and officer. Talk to your advisors. Would they support you and believe in you as a leader. Talk to administration. Do they feel you would make a good role model for others.
Continued Believe it or not, some of you new Phi Theta Kappans are already thinking…Hey, I can do that! You can all do this! If you believe it you can achieve it! The next step is to get your name on the ballot! Don’t delay, step up and be counted!
Officer Responsibilities Officer responsibilities vary from chapter to chapter. What I’m going to do is give you a generalized case scenario of what your role might look like. Understand that your role will be specific to your By-laws and can interpreted differently. I want you to be ready to take on the challenge and succeed! EVERYBODY READY???????
Example of a Chapter President This role can be defined in many ways but most people see this chapter officer position as the person who does it all! They are wrong! The President presides over chapter meetings, helps create ideas for projects and programs, completes annual reports and DELEGATES responsibilities to others. The President is NOT a super hero, they are there to create a TEAM that works together toward the same goals!
Expectation of Officers We are offering a session on specific expectations of officers today as well! If you truly want to dive into the rolls of chapter officers, please take the time to attend this presentation. The presentation will be at: 1:45, Room 108.
Most important when holding a chapter office… The most important thing for you to remember when holding a chapter office is that you represent not only your chapter, you represent yourself, your college, your community and your region! When you look in the mirror, who do you see? Do you like what you see? Are you being, doing and representing in the most positive manner?
Continued… Think before you speak! Think before you act! Think before you judge! Remember….others will be looking up to you! What do you want them to see YOU model? AND…..HAVE FUN!!!!!
What are the benefits of being a Chapter Officer You become a role model for others that follow you! You become more advanced as a leader! Some chapters offer incentives such as waived annual dues, assistance with regional and international travel and various leadership training. You get opportunities for campus leadership that you may not have gotten before.
Continued… You get to help watch an idea become a reality behind the scenes! You get extra scholarship opportunities! You get the satisfaction of knowing that you not only participated in a phenomenal program but you helped lead it as well! You come to fully realize what it means to “serve others” and it will make your heart smile!
Deciding to be a Regional Officer Serving as a Regional Officer is the Pinnacle of your region. You will represent each the state, each chapter, each chapter officer, each chapter member and each chapter advisor. It will be your responsibility to make sure your Region stays abreast of all the programs and activities that are offered and help promote them.
Regional Office Expectations Although the expectations may vary for each Regional Officer from region to region, expectations remain the same throughout Phi Theta Kappa.   Regional Officers are expected to uphold the Honor Code that must be signed by each Regional Officer upon their acceptance of their individual office. Running for office cynthia

  • 1. What YOU should know about running for Chapter, Regional or International Office. Cynthia Mason, President Kentucky Regional Alumni Association Alpha Delta Chapter Hopkinsville Community College
  • 2. Why take up Leadership? Taking up a leadership role in Phi Theta Kappa is the Pinnacle experience of a lifetime!  It is truly your opportunity to make a difference in the life of others, and in the world in which we live!
  • 7. Continued Believe it or not, some of you new Phi Theta Kappans are already thinking…Hey, I can do that! You can all do this! If you believe it you can achieve it! The next step is to get your name on the ballot! Don’t delay, step up and be counted!
  • 10. Expectation of Officers We are offering a session on specific expectations of officers today as well! If you truly want to dive into the rolls of chapter officers, please take the time to attend this presentation. The presentation will be at: 1:45, Room 108.
  • 11. Most important when holding a chapter office… The most important thing for you to remember when holding a chapter office is that you represent not only your chapter, you represent yourself, your college, your community and your region! When you look in the mirror, who do you see? Do you like what you see? Are you being, doing and representing in the most positive manner?
  • 12. Continued… Think before you speak! Think before you act! Think before you judge! Remember….others will be looking up to you! What do you want them to see YOU model? AND…..HAVE FUN!!!!!
  • 13. What are the benefits of being a Chapter Officer You become a role model for others that follow you! You become more advanced as a leader! Some chapters offer incentives such as waived annual dues, assistance with regional and international travel and various leadership training. You get opportunities for campus leadership that you may not have gotten before.
  • 14. Continued… You get to help watch an idea become a reality behind the scenes! You get extra scholarship opportunities! You get the satisfaction of knowing that you not only participated in a phenomenal program but you helped lead it as well! You come to fully realize what it means to “serve others” and it will make your heart smile!
  • 15. Deciding to be a Regional Officer Serving as a Regional Officer is the Pinnacle of your region.
