Aim: Why is the earths
crust so unstable?
Video clip
The Restless Earth
LO: Why is the earths crust so unstable?
A. Structure of the earth
1. Label the 4
parts of the
earth.
2.Then colour
and stick it in
to your
exercise
books neatly.
LO: Why is the earths crust so unstable?
Add more detail to
your diagram from the
information above
B. Why do plates move?
LO: Why is the earths crust so unstable?
B. Why do plates move?
Watch the video here
– Plates move due to the convection currents in the mantle.
– Convection currents are the cycle of heating, rising, cooling
and sinking.
C. Location of plates
• Plates have moved apart due to convection currents.
They were once all one land mass – Pangea.
LO: Why is the earths crust so unstable?
LO: Why is the earths crust so unstable?
D. Different types of Crust
LO: Why is the earths crust so unstable?
CONTINENTAL OCEANIC
- 25-100km thick
- Light (and so floats)
-Older (over 1500m yrs)
- Not destroyed as
easily as oceanic crust
- 5-10KM thick
- Dense (and so sinks)
- Newer
- Constantly being
renewed and destroyed
D. Different types of Crust
• Watch this clip from 5.20 Power of the Planet
as a recap on plates so far.
