2. Where in the World?
Brighton's
coastline,
was just 2.2
miles long
before 1928,
but now it
stretches 5.4
miles from
the Hove
boundary to
Saltdean.

3. Quick history…
• Brighthelmston was a fishing village in the 16th century, with 400 fishermen and
sixty boats. By the early 17th century Brighton was the largest town in Sussex with
a population of nearly 4,000 people.
• The decline in the fishing industry during the 18th century resulted in large
numbers leaving the town in search of work.
• In the middle of the 18th century some doctors began to claim that diseases could
be cured by bathing in sea-water. George IV, spent a great deal of time in Brighton.
• Rich people tended to imitate the behaviour of the royal family, and holidays by the
sea became very fashionable.
• Brighton soon became the most popular seaside resort in Britain, with over 2,000
people a week visiting the town.

4. Coasts
• Coasts are important for many different
reasons and for different groups of people.
They provide:
• places to live
• places to work, e.g. fishing, ports and
power stations
• places to relax – tourism industries
• wildlife habitats
• beautiful scenery
• educational value, e.g. geology and natural
history

7. Decision Making Exercise
• In June you will be visiting Brighton for a days fieldwork to
see what management strategies are in place to protect the
coast.
• This lesson you will be given detailed information on the
different management strategies, you need to read the
information carefully and then decide which ones you
would implement, if you were making all the decisions.

• In small groups discuss the ideas that you
have put forward and see if you would like to
add any other scheme to your plan.
• When we visit Brighton you will be able to
compare the data you collect with the maps
that you have completed today.

10. TASK
1. Log onto KS3 Bite size geography coast
(home > Geography > Physical processes > Coasts-
ACTIVITY)
2. Listen to all the different management options
3. Make notes on all 5 in your exercise books
4. Open Google earth or maps and mark the following
places on yourA3 map Brighton Pier, Marina Village
and Saltdean.
5. Then, choose what you would like to put in place at
Brighton. What coastal defences do you think are best
to protect Brighton? Choose three and put them in
the boxes on the A3 sheet.
