18. 2. Why has demand increased for holidays
into extreme environments?
1. Increased wealth (more money to spend
visiting extreme environments)
2. Places are becoming more accessible than
ever (e.g. Antarctica)
3. Growing popularity of eco-tourism into
remote parts of the world (e.g. Amazon
rainforest)
4. Marketing. More places are promoted to
people today (e.g. seeing a cruise to
Antarctica advertised in the Sunday
Papers!) E.g. here

19. 3. What are the impacts of tourism
on extreme environments?
Positive Negative
As tourists are visiting very extreme locations (surfing in Antarctica) they are unlikely
to cause mass damage.
Tourists promote destinations by ‘word of
mouth’ and places soon become at risk of
being loved to death as more people visit it.
