State of the GeoWeb

Google and others have all talked about how well the geoweb is doing. Lets look at some
history.

The idea of ‘mashing up’ data from so many sources via dynamic data, and integrating it with mobile
devices was still nascent.

And now these ideas are quite well understood and employed for a variety of businesses and
applications. Pulling together the GeoWeb is an accepted practice that is still moving along very
quickly.
When Mapufacture merged with GeoCommons we built a platform to make this quick
building of aggregated maps with analysis very easy.
GeoCommons Finder! is a public repository with more than 10,000 datasets and over
100,000 attributes of quality data contributed from the public and experts.
GeoCommons Maker! has introduced users to more advanced thematic mapping, analytics
and collaborative visualization.
Built of the GeoWeb

GeoCommons utilizes many technologies from the GeoWeb.
RESTful                    OpenSearch

       <meta   name=quot;dc.publisherquot;
       <meta   name=quot;dc.datequot;
       <meta   name=quot;dc.typequot;
       <meta   name=quot;dc.formatquot;

Web aligned interfaces for querying data, and aggregating search results.
KML                        Spatialite                    Atom

                                     ... and Spreadsheets, Shapefiles
Open data formats to easily get your data into, and out of, GeoCommons.
New cartography tools for customized basemaps and mapping interfaces
API - Feed the Innovators

And we’re now releasing a first glance at our API for developers to innovate on top of our
platform

We’re using GitHub to document the evolving API and provide open-source libraries,
examples, and tools for building with our API.
Web-Aligned API

                                                AtomPub

It’s all built around the Atom Publishing Protocol
API - Cascadenik                                                maps/452.mss

            line-width: 2;

             }

        </Datasource>
      </Layer>

And we’re even using some very new ways to share cartographic data. Build your maps in
Maker and then pull into Mapnik, QGIS, or other tools for additional modification and
rendering.
Working within the GeoWeb

Because we’ve been aligned with the GeoWeb, it’s been very easy to use other services and
for partners to build with GeoCommons.
Aaron showed of the very good, and open, Flickr shapefile export. We’ve been using them to
do analysis of user-specified areas against economic data.
Media has been using GeoCommons to share FOIA’d data and build visualizations for their
readers to understand complex relationships between their government and community.
url
         news.geocommons.com

We’ve also been tracking and analyzing emerging news stories through our News dashboard.
Your Own GeoWeb

This is all great - but many users have concerns about putting their data into the “Web”, or
can’t access high-speed internet due to security, infrastructure, or other reasons.
So we’re announcing GeoIQ - it’s like GeoCommons private for your business or
organization. It’s the technology and data of the GeoWeb, operating within your own
infrastructure.
GeoIQ Appliance

We’ve actually been supporting GeoIQ as an appliance for government and enterprise.
Customers can install the GeoIQ server into their existing network infrastructure,
authentication mechanisms, and workflow to enable their employees to access powerful
visualization and analysis.
url
                                                    http://picasaweb.google.com/fobtaj/FobtajNerdSurge09#5293904053036246418

                                                                                                                                                                             http://www.flickr.com/photos/oddwick/3488013068
                              Beer for Data                                                                                    http://humanitariantechnet.asu.edu/node/231

A very compelling example of this that I can share with you is the “Beer for Data” program.
There is a tiki bar in Jalalabad, Afghanistan where UN workers, NGO’s, contractors, and
citizens can safely come and provide anonymous data. A GeoIQ server is now available for
anyone to upload, share, and visualize data. Because the appliance can run entirely ‘offline’, it
works extremely well in the disconnected environment while still providing for a local area,
web based tool.
url
               Installing GIS Servers                    not fun

However, not everyone can or wants to deal with additional infrastructure or servers. And
installing alternative software is often difficult on support to build and maintain.
So we’re now announcing GeoIQ Small Business - for companies with small and medium
teams that want to leverage the powerful GeoIQ platform but without the overhead of servers
and network administration.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kky/704056791
                                                                                                                               url
               Leveraging the Cloud

We’re using the Cloud to provide these private servers on-demand with dynamic scaling
depending on your needs.
url
                           On-Demand
                       Private GeoWeb
The entire system is private, secure, and maintained by FortiusOne. So customers have peace
of mind without the operational burden.
url
          Community as a Service

And because it’s still part of the GeoWeb and using open interchange mechanisms, you can
still pull in the huge amount of publicly available data to compare against your private
company information.
url
          Community as a Service

Search results from your local GeoIQ server and public server are integrated. Providing a
seamless search between your private GeoWeb and the public GeoWeb.
Enterprise and Small Business Use Case

To illustrate how you could use a private GeoWeb, lets consider a use case where a business
is evaluating current market health and considering where to expand in order to compensate
for the downturned economy.

Mobile devices can be used to perform geolocated user or customer surveys and fed into
GeoIQ for additional analysis and continual status monitoring.

                 Global Opportunities

With our GeoIQ analysis engine, users can do correlations of attributes in datasets to identify
trends and related factors.

            Corporate Dashboards

We’re open-sourcing our News Dashboard application for customers and developers to build
their own dashboards. Maps built in GeoIQ are automatically updated in the Dashboard.

Your Own Private GeoWeb

  • 1. Your Own Private GeoWeb Andrew Turner - @ajturner CTO - FortiusOne
  • 2. State of the GeoWeb Google and others have all talked about how well the geoweb is doing. Lets look at some history.
  • 3. W he re 2 .0 20 07 Using and Enabling the Emerging GeoStack Andrew Turner andrew@highearthorbit.com At Where2.0 in 2007, I talked about the broadening concept of geospatial data interoperability via open data formats, services, and functionality
  • 4. W he re 2 .0 House Hunting 20 07 GPX KML KML GeoRSS KML GeoRSS GML KML The idea of ‘mashing up’ data from so many sources via dynamic data, and integrating it with mobile devices was still nascent.
  • 5. W he re 2.0 Apartment Hunting 20 07 GeoRSS GeoRSS GeoPress GeoRSS GeoRSS GeoRSS The same concept allows for pulling data together to solve different problems.
  • 6. W he re 2 .0 Disaster Response 20 07 Tiles WFS GeoRSS GeoRSS Sensors WFS KML WMS KML And now these ideas are quite well understood and employed for a variety of businesses and applications. Pulling together the GeoWeb is an accepted practice that is still moving along very quickly.
  • 7. When Mapufacture merged with GeoCommons we built a platform to make this quick building of aggregated maps with analysis very easy.
  • 8. GeoCommons Finder! is a public repository with more than 10,000 datasets and over 100,000 attributes of quality data contributed from the public and experts.
  • 9. GeoCommons Maker! has introduced users to more advanced thematic mapping, analytics and collaborative visualization.
  • 10. Built of the GeoWeb GeoCommons utilizes many technologies from the GeoWeb.
  • 11. RESTful OpenSearch <meta name=quot;dc.publisherquot; <meta name=quot;dc.datequot; <meta name=quot;dc.typequot; <meta name=quot;dc.formatquot; Web aligned interfaces for querying data, and aggregating search results.
  • 12. KML Spatialite Atom ... and Spreadsheets, Shapefiles Open data formats to easily get your data into, and out of, GeoCommons.
  • 13. New cartography tools for customized basemaps and mapping interfaces
  • 14. API - Feed the Innovators And we’re now releasing a first glance at our API for developers to innovate on top of our platform
  • 15. url We’re using GitHub to document the evolving API and provide open-source libraries, examples, and tools for building with our API.
  • 16. Web-Aligned API AtomPub It’s all built around the Atom Publishing Protocol
  • 17. API - Cascadenik maps/452.mss <Map srs=quot;+proj=merc +a=6378137 +b=6378137 +lat_ts=0.0 +lon_0=0.0 +x_0=0.0 +y_0=0 +k=1.0 +units=m +nadgrids=@null +no_defs +overquot;> <Stylesheet>  .a039caa573de4f91[answer>=1][answer<1.6006] { polygon-fill: #ff776d; polygon-opacity: 0.75; line-color: #ff776d; line-width: 2; } ...  </Stylesheet> <Layer class=quot;a039caa573de4f91quot; name=quot;a039caa573de4f91quot; status=quot;onquot; srs=quot;+proj=longlat +ellps=WGS84 +datum=WGS84 +no_defsquot;> <StyleName>a039caa573de4f91</StyleName> <Datasource> <Parameter name=quot;typequot;>shape</Parameter> <Parameter name=quot;filequot;>http://finder.demo.geoiq.com/overlays/25.zip</Parameter> </Datasource> </Layer>  And we’re even using some very new ways to share cartographic data. Build your maps in Maker and then pull into Mapnik, QGIS, or other tools for additional modification and rendering.
  • 18. Working within the GeoWeb Because we’ve been aligned with the GeoWeb, it’s been very easy to use other services and for partners to build with GeoCommons.
  • 19. Aaron showed of the very good, and open, Flickr shapefile export. We’ve been using them to do analysis of user-specified areas against economic data.
  • 20. Media has been using GeoCommons to share FOIA’d data and build visualizations for their readers to understand complex relationships between their government and community.
  • 21. url news.geocommons.com We’ve also been tracking and analyzing emerging news stories through our News dashboard.
  • 22. Your Own GeoWeb This is all great - but many users have concerns about putting their data into the “Web”, or can’t access high-speed internet due to security, infrastructure, or other reasons.
  • 23. So we’re announcing GeoIQ - it’s like GeoCommons private for your business or organization. It’s the technology and data of the GeoWeb, operating within your own infrastructure.
  • 24. GeoIQ Appliance We’ve actually been supporting GeoIQ as an appliance for government and enterprise. Customers can install the GeoIQ server into their existing network infrastructure, authentication mechanisms, and workflow to enable their employees to access powerful visualization and analysis.
  • 25. url http://picasaweb.google.com/fobtaj/FobtajNerdSurge09#5293904053036246418 http://www.flickr.com/photos/oddwick/3488013068 Beer for Data http://humanitariantechnet.asu.edu/node/231 A very compelling example of this that I can share with you is the “Beer for Data” program. There is a tiki bar in Jalalabad, Afghanistan where UN workers, NGO’s, contractors, and citizens can safely come and provide anonymous data. A GeoIQ server is now available for anyone to upload, share, and visualize data. Because the appliance can run entirely ‘offline’, it works extremely well in the disconnected environment while still providing for a local area, web based tool.
  • 26. url Installing GIS Servers not fun However, not everyone can or wants to deal with additional infrastructure or servers. And installing alternative software is often difficult on support to build and maintain.
  • 27. So we’re now announcing GeoIQ Small Business - for companies with small and medium teams that want to leverage the powerful GeoIQ platform but without the overhead of servers and network administration.
  • 28. http://www.flickr.com/photos/kky/704056791 url Leveraging the Cloud We’re using the Cloud to provide these private servers on-demand with dynamic scaling depending on your needs.
  • 29. url On-Demand Private GeoWeb The entire system is private, secure, and maintained by FortiusOne. So customers have peace of mind without the operational burden.
  • 30. url Community as a Service And because it’s still part of the GeoWeb and using open interchange mechanisms, you can still pull in the huge amount of publicly available data to compare against your private company information.
  • 31. url Community as a Service Search results from your local GeoIQ server and public server are integrated. Providing a seamless search between your private GeoWeb and the public GeoWeb.
  • 32. Enterprise and Small Business Use Case To illustrate how you could use a private GeoWeb, lets consider a use case where a business is evaluating current market health and considering where to expand in order to compensate for the downturned economy.
  • 34. url Dynamic Analysis of Unemployment vs. Sales
  • 35. url Where are leads coming from?
  • 36. url Social Media as indiciator
  • 37. url Mobile Surveys Mobile devices can be used to perform geolocated user or customer surveys and fed into GeoIQ for additional analysis and continual status monitoring.
  • 38. url Global Opportunities With our GeoIQ analysis engine, users can do correlations of attributes in datasets to identify trends and related factors.
  • 39. url Corporate Dashboards We’re open-sourcing our News Dashboard application for customers and developers to build their own dashboards. Maps built in GeoIQ are automatically updated in the Dashboard.
  • 40. url API Built Custom Tools We built an example map comparison tool using our API.
  • 43. GeoWeb http://fortiusone.com/cloud Find out more on our website at http://fortiusone.com/cloud or email me at andrew@fortiusone.com or sales@fortiusone.com
