About ASME


ASME, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, is a not-for-profit membership
organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, career enrichment, and skills
development across all engineering disciplines. Founded in 1880 by a small group of leading
industrialists, ASME has grown through the decades to include more than 120,000 members in
over 140 countries around the globe.

India comes under District G (Asia-Pacific) of this large community. ASME started its
operations in the student community in India around 3 years back. So relatively India is a new
section to the ASME community. But even in this small span of time, India has made its
presence felt with over 30 strong student sections-the most in District G. The number of student
members in India is more than any other country from Asia-Pacific constituting about 65% of all
the student members of the district.



Mission:

ASME in India works in accordance with its international mission- “To serve our diverse global
community by advancing, disseminating and applying engineering knowledge for improving the
quality of life and communicating the excitement of engineering.”



Vision:

ASME is a membership organization recognized globally for its leadership in providing the
engineering community with technical content and a forum for information exchange. With a
membership of more than 127,000 mechanical engineers and allied professionals from around
the world, ASME serves this wide-ranging technical community through high-quality programs
in continuing education, the development and maintenance of codes and standards, research,
conferences and publications, government relations, and various forms of outreach.

The ASME student section in BITS-Pilani Goa was started to provide students an opportunity to
Enhance their technical knowledge, showcase their talent and network with professionals and
other student members from all over the world. The section works under the guidance of our
faculty advisor Dr. Shibu Clement and the Head of the Department, Dr Pravin Singru. The
explorations conducted by students under ASME have played a part in improving their interest in
various fields ranging from theoretical understanding of various principles to their practical
implementations.

Lecture Series
ProEngineer Software Lectures

These lectures were taken in the Computer Centre from 21st Sept-24th Sept 2012, in association with the
Mechanical Engineering Students Association (MESA) –BPGC, by Iniyan Thiruselvam N.

Students were taught how to use various tools in proE to design and assemble parts.

AutoCAD 2012 Software Lectures

These lectures will be conducted in the Computer Centre from 8th Oct-10th Oct 2012, by Nikhil Khicha.

Students will be taught about the various tools and utilities of the software and how to use the software to
design objects.

Supersonic flow through convergent divergent nozzle

Description of Exploration:

A brief overview:

   •   Convergent nozzles accelerate flows till sonic velocities are reached.

   •   A diverging nozzle in conjunction to a sonic converging nozzle produces supersonic flow.

   •   Diverging portion produces sub-sonic flow if the throat Mach number is sub-sonic.

   •   Presence of shock waves in case of under or over-expanded C-D nozzles.

2013 Arthur L. Williston Award Contest


                     THE WILLISTON AWARD IS PRESENTED ANNUALLY BY ASME
                 TO THE STUDENT ENGINEER OR RECENT GRADUATE WHO AUTHORS
                   THE BEST ACCEPTABLE PAPER IN THE AREA OF CIVIC SERVICE

TOPIC AREA: Engineering of Personal Transportation Alternatives

ASSIGNMENT: An effective and efficient transportation system, accompanied by equally high-caliber water and electricity
distribution systems, is an indispensable part of the infrastructure of a prosperous society with a high standard of living. In the
USA, for instance, the topic is of high enough strategic importance to justify the existence of a long-standing Transportation
Research Board as part of the National Academies; the think-tank organization that shapes policy, informs public opinion and
advances the pursuit of science, engineering and medicine.

Transportation systems such as buses, trains, planes and ships provide for mass transportation, and tend to serve regions of
higher population densities. Personal transportation, on the other hand, tends to be dominated by the automobile. While
providing a high degree of flexibility and convenience, the dependence of traditional automobiles on petroleum-based fuels is
widely recognized as unsustainable. You are being asked to examine these issues and propose your vision for the future of
personal transportation.

Discuss the general problems of personal transportation on a global level, with a critical look at our present means of
transportation. Include in your discussion a survey of the personal transportation alternatives that have been developed or
proposed, and their current status, and follow on with your vision for the future. What role would engineering innovation,
especially from mechanical engineers; play in developing effective personal transportation alternatives?

AWARD: The first prize winner receives formal recognition by the Society that includes having an abstract of the paper
published in ASME News Online or Mechanical Advantage. In addition, the first prizewinner will receive a bronze medal, an
honorarium of $1000, a certificate, and travel and expense allowance for two days at the 2013 International Mechanical
Engineering Congress and Exposition.

            The second prize winner receives a $500 honorarium and a Williston certificate.
            The third prize winner receives a $250 honorarium and a Williston certificate.
            All authors of acceptable papers will receive a letter of participation.

DEADLINE: Papers must be submitted by February 15, 2013 or they will not be accepted.

CONTEST RULES:
Papers that do not comply with the contest rules will not be accepted for consideration by the General Awards Committee.

         1. Eligibility: ASME Student Members or Members who received baccalaureate degrees in mechanical
            engineering or mechanical engineering technology not more than two years before the contest deadline are
            eligible. The paper must be based on the work of an individual and not a team.

         2. Format: Each entry must be formatted as follows: double-spaced, 81⁄2" x 11" with 1-inch margins all around, or
            A4 size with equivalent margins. Maximum length of the document, including cover page, abstract (this not to
            exceed one page), references, footnotes and figures, is 12 pages. The cover page shall indicate the title of the
            paper, author's full name and signature, address, the name of the school from which he/she has graduated or
            expects to graduate, and the expected or actual date of graduation; and the full name, signature and address of
            a sponsor who is responsible for assuring that the paper addresses the topic and complies with the rules of the
            contest.

         3. Sponsor: An ASME Corporate Member (Member, Fellow or Corporate Honorary Member) who has taken an
            active role in encouraging or guiding participation of a maximum of two authors in the contest shall be listed as
            sponsor.

         4. Deadline: Papers that satisfy the contest rules must be submitted by February 15, 2013. E-

             Submission can be a Microsoft Word .doc document or an Adobe Acrobat .pdf file.

         5. Results: All participants will be notified about the contest results by June 30, 2013.

PAPER JUDGING
Papers dealing with the specified topic and meeting the contest rules will be scored by the ASME General Awards Committee
on the basis of 100 points, distributed as follows:

         1. ORIGINALITY & RELEVANCE—(40 Points)
            How original and of what significance is the author's main idea? Has the topic been addressed? How well does it
            compare and contrast with alternate approaches to the problem? What is the potential impact if the idea is
            implemented?

         2. DEVELOPMENT—(30 Points)
            How well does the author develop his/her argument? Is the paper persuasive in terms of its technical basis,
            logic, and depth of explanation? Does the author build on past knowledge in this area?

         3. PRESENTATION—(30 Points)
            How effectively does the author communicate his/her ideas? Is the content well organized and are the ideas
            presented clearly and concisely? Are grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure and other aspects of
            the composition correct? Is effective use made of figures, tables and other illustrations?


The highest scoring acceptable paper will be declared the winner.

Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC) 2013

The Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC) is an annual ASME conference held
at district level.

The main purpose of SPDC is the selection of a body of student members to overlook the student
activities at district level. The conference is open to representatives of all ASME student sections
throughout the district. The members selected here represent their district at the international
level.

The selection of governing team (SDOB members) takes place in Student Leadership Seminar
(SLS). The conference is marked by a score of other competitions, Old Guard paper presentation
competition, Old Guard technical poster competition to name a few. The district G SPDC 2011
was held at National Tsing hua university, Taiwan and the SPDC 2012 was held at BITS, Dubai.

Venue of SPDC 2013 for India will be announced soon.

2013 Student Design Competition: Remote Inspection Device

After the tragedy at the Fukushima nuclear facility following the March 2011 Tohoku earthquake and
tsunami, the nuclear industry has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to design and build a small,
remotely-controlled inspection vehicle. The purpose of the vehicle is to determine the level of
radioactivity at specified locations and inspect for damage. This vehicle will protect the human operator
from absorbing a high dose of radioactive contamination. There is information that could be gained by the
inspection vehicle that could inform the plant operators so that they may avert an accident or begin
repairs.

    •   Your task is to design a remotely-controlled, proof-of-concept vehicle for inspection purposes.
        The vehicle must be able to negotiate around obstacles, both in getting to the inspection points
        and in bringing the sensor back to the designated return area. The vehicle must then return to its
        starting location, ready for another run.

Robocon 2013

Robocon is a competition held for Asian countries. The problem statement of the competition consists of
performing a specified task using generally two or more robots. You can find more about it on-
http://aburobocon2013.vtv.gov.vn/. The competition (national round) is in March 2013.
This year our campus is participating in robocon for the first time.The work has been already started. Still
students who are interested in mechanical design and mainly protoyping robots are welcome. There are no
prerequisites except dedication in work. Students who are familiar with motion simulation/modelling in
proE/catia etc are also required.

Supersonic flow through convergent divergent nozzle Description of Exploration: A brief overview: • Convergent nozzles accelerate flows till sonic velocities are reached. • A diverging nozzle in conjunction to a sonic converging nozzle produces supersonic flow. • Diverging portion produces sub-sonic flow if the throat Mach number is sub-sonic. • Presence of shock waves in case of under or over-expanded C-D nozzles. Williston Award Contest THE WILLISTON AWARD IS PRESENTED ANNUALLY BY ASME TO THE STUDENT ENGINEER OR RECENT GRADUATE WHO AUTHORS THE BEST ACCEPTABLE PAPER IN THE AREA OF CIVIC SERVICE TOPIC AREA: Engineering of Personal Transportation Alternatives ASSIGNMENT: An effective and efficient transportation system, accompanied by equally high-caliber water and electricity distribution systems, is an indispensable part of the infrastructure of a prosperous society with a high standard of living. In the USA, for instance, the topic is of high enough strategic importance to justify the existence of a long-standing Transportation Research Board as part of the National Academies; the think-tank organization that shapes policy, informs public opinion and advances the pursuit of science, engineering and medicine. Transportation systems such as buses, trains, planes and ships provide for mass transportation, and tend to serve regions of higher population densities. Personal transportation, on the other hand, tends to be dominated by the automobile. While providing a high degree of flexibility and convenience, the dependence of traditional automobiles on petroleum-based fuels is widely recognized as unsustainable. You are being asked to examine these issues and propose your vision for the future of personal transportation. Discuss the general problems of personal transportation on a global level, with a critical look at our present means of transportation. Include in your discussion a survey of the personal transportation alternatives that have been developed or proposed, and their current status, and follow on with your vision for the future. What role would engineering innovation, especially from mechanical engineers; play in developing effective personal transportation alternatives? AWARD: The first prize winner receives formal recognition by the Society that includes having an abstract of the paper published in ASME News Online or Mechanical Advantage. In addition, the first prizewinner will receive a bronze medal, an honorarium of $1000, a certificate, and travel and expense allowance for two days at the 2013 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition.  The second prize winner receives a $500 honorarium and a Williston certificate.  The third prize winner receives a $250 honorarium and a Williston certificate.  All authors of acceptable papers will receive a letter of participation.   • 13. CONTEST RULES: Papers that do not comply with the contest rules will not be accepted for consideration by the General Awards Committee. 1. Eligibility: ASME Student Members or Members who received baccalaureate degrees in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology not more than two years before the contest deadline are eligible. The paper must be based on the work of an individual and not a team. 2. Format: Each entry must be formatted as follows: double-spaced, 81⁄2" x 11" with 1-inch margins all around, or A4 size with equivalent margins. Maximum length of the document, including cover page, abstract (this not to exceed one page), references, footnotes and figures, is 12 pages. The cover page shall indicate the title of the paper, author's full name and signature, address, the name of the school from which he/she has graduated or expects to graduate, and the expected or actual date of graduation; and the full name, signature and address of a sponsor who is responsible for assuring that the paper addresses the topic and complies with the rules of the contest. 3. Sponsor: An ASME Corporate Member (Member, Fellow or Corporate Honorary Member) who has taken an active role in encouraging or guiding participation of a maximum of two authors in the contest shall be listed as sponsor. 4. Results: All participants will be notified about the contest results by June 30, 2013. PAPER JUDGING Papers dealing with the specified topic and meeting the contest rules will be scored by the ASME General Awards Committee on the basis of 100 points, distributed as follows: 1. ORIGINALITY & RELEVANCE—(40 Points) How original and of what significance is the author's main idea? Has the topic been addressed? How well does it compare and contrast with alternate approaches to the problem? What is the potential impact if the idea is implemented? 2. DEVELOPMENT—(30 Points) How well does the author develop his/her argument? Is the paper persuasive in terms of its technical basis, logic, and depth of explanation? Does the author build on past knowledge in this area? 3. PRESENTATION—(30 Points) How effectively does the author communicate his/her ideas? Is the content well organized and are the ideas presented clearly and concisely? Are grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure and other aspects of the composition correct? Is effective use made of figures, tables and other illustrations? The highest scoring acceptable paper will be declared the winner. 13 | P a g e
  • 14. Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC) 2013 The Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC) is an annual ASME conference held at district level. The main purpose of SPDC is the selection of a body of student members to overlook the student activities at district level. The conference is open to representatives of all ASME student sections throughout the district. The members selected here represent their district at the international level. The selection of governing team (SDOB members) takes place in Student Leadership Seminar (SLS). The conference is marked by a score of other competitions, Old Guard paper presentation competition, Old Guard technical poster competition to name a few. The district G SPDC 2011 was held at National Tsing hua university, Taiwan and the SPDC 2012 was held at BITS, Dubai. Venue of SPDC 2013 for India will be announced soon. Student Design Competition 2013 Student Design Competition: Remote Inspection Device http://districts.asme.org/SDOB/DistrictG/India/Events/SDC.html After the tragedy at the Fukushima nuclear facility following the March 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, the nuclear industry has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to design and build a small, remotely-controlled inspection vehicle. The purpose of the vehicle is to determine the level of radioactivity at specified locations and inspect for damage. This vehicle will protect the human operator from absorbing a high dose of radioactive contamination. There is information that could be gained by the inspection vehicle that could inform the plant operators so that they may avert an accident or begin repairs. • Your task is to design a remotely-controlled, proof-of-concept vehicle for inspection purposes. The vehicle must be able to negotiate around obstacles, both in getting to the inspection points and in bringing the sensor back to the designated return area.
