2. OUR CENTER IS LOCATED IN THE
CITY OF LAS PALMAS DE GRAN
CANARIA
3. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE
SCHOOL
The “Santiago Ramón y Cajal” is a building of the European
Centre of Rural information and Promotion ( C.E.I.P.) It was built in
the 70s on land provisionally giving by the Patronage. Today it still
stands and functions in El Polvorín, one of the most socially and
culturally disadvantaged areas from the capital of Gran Canaria.
The students that attend this centre, in general, have big social
problems, which creates frequent disruptions and lack of motivation
towards their studies.
Family disintegration is one of the main reasons for these social
difficulties; the family structure is usually irregular; young single
mothers, single parent families, adpted children, 3 generation-
families, etc. All these are, without a doubt, issues aggressiveness,
insecurity, low self-steem, lack of motivation and educational failure.
4. These children and teenagers daily live in an environment
of drug addiction, unemployment, poverty and lack of
resources. The economic suation of their families is, in
general, precarious. The majority does not even have
regular or enough incomes to cover basic needs.
Generally, the inhabitans of El Polvorín isolate themselves
and don´t take advantage of cultural or social activities or
possibilities in spite of living downtown, remainig in their
neighbourdhood during their leisure time.
