- 1. We’re the company of others 22/3/13
- 2. Something big is happening. And the world hasn’t caught up with it yet. The opportunity
- 3. Millions are taking control of their own destiny
- 4. If you designed your perfect job • You’d matter more than your job title. • Everyone would want you to succeed. • You and your laptop would go wherever you needed to be. • You’d design a balanced life
- 5. But the reality is different
- 6. Millions still hold onto the idea that a job is for life
- 7. Freelancing is no longer the stopgap
- 8. Freelancing is a noble career
- 9. In fact, many of us are choosing independence
- 10. If we could just tackle the downsides
- 12. We want everyone to seize the day
- 13. To make a life doing the things they enjoy
- 14. Serendipity
- 15. Good old fashioned support
- 16. Validation
- 17. A tiny bit of structure!
- 18. We are the company of others
- 19. When many become one great things happen
- 20. We are the freestyle economy

- I bet you know what I’m talking about. It’s almost like those of us that are in the know have a secret wink. So why is the rest of the corporate world so resistant?
- The fact is that many people are choosing to take control of their own destiny even if they’ve been working for the same employer for years
- So what do we need to provide for people to help them make that leap into the unknowen and make a life doing the things that they enjoy.
- One of things that you often miss is is what we often call the Water Cooler Moment. Those chance meetings, the value add to being part of a team. If we help poeopleby providing those moments we are onto something.
- You might not be able to ask for it, but we all need it. Good old fashioned empathetic hugs. That goes a long way to helping people fell that they aren’t going insane working on their own and that they’ve got someone to talk to
- Which brings me onto validation. It’s a basic human need, but we all need to know that we are on the right track. That we are part of a tribe that is going places.
- Even creative freelancers and independents need a bit of structure. Not too much, but a gentle steer and prod to keep you moving. Techniques to avoid procrastination.
- So in our brave new world, we’d call this the company of others. One where you can be your own boss but have access to the resources, skills and infrasctructure that are part and parcel of working in an organisation – but without any of the crap.
- After all, there’s no reason why you need to give up your right to indepennce and control in order to be part of a team. It’s just a different model.
- So – let’s help each other – make each other much more successful. Let’s create the freestyle economy.- a genuinely new way to think about making a living.
