Presentation Zen

Notas del editor

  1. \nWelcome!\n\nI’m going to spend 5 minutes talking about the rationale behind presentations\n\nThen I’ll outline my 4 key themes around presenting\n\nThen I’ll go through each one in a little more detail\n\n\n
  2. Why do we present? \n\n[ ask for suggestions ]\n\nWe present to change minds\n\nWe present to make a difference\n\n\n\n
  3. Why to people to go to presentations?\n\n- they are forced to (or feel that they need to be seen!)\n - Ignore this group - they’re the ones reading email and texting\n\n- to learn something\n\n- to be inspired\n\n- to be entertained\n\nthat’s your audience - the people that are there to engage \n\n\n
  4. Presenting is a transfer of emotions - Seth Godin\n\nI love presenting\n\nI see it as a performance\n\nan opportunity:\n- to persuade,\n- to influence, \n- to change minds\n- to inspire\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
  5. but presenting is a skill - and like all skills there are basic concepts and techniques\n\nlike all skills - it can be learned, honed and improved\n\nToday I’m going to try and persuade you \n - presenting well is a skill\n - a skill that everyone in business should try and improve\n - a think that people should come to love\n\nPresenting is a key skill in business - it’s hard to avoid\n\nIt’s one of the key attributes of a successful leader\n - if you want to climb the corporate ladder, you need to be good at presenting!\n\nSO, let's have a look at a presentation in action:\n\n\n
  6. \nSo, my objective is to try and prevent any of that happening to any of you!\n
  7. Fear is the main thing that puts people off presenting\n\nIt’s the thing that stops people being creative when presenting\n\nThe techniques that I’m going to go through are all designed to reduce your fear\n\nThe objective is to help you to start overcoming the fear and concentrating on technique\n\nI get nervous before each and every talk I give - but with the right techniques you can use nervous energy to your advantage!\n\n[ PAUSE ]\n\nThe 4 things I believe are key to giving a successful presentation are:\n\n
  8. \nPrepare\n\nPractice\n\nPerform\n\nReview\n
  9. \nBeing fully prepared for your presentation is key\n\nThere are a few techniques that I use in my preparation that I find invaluable\n\nThere are more, and I encourage you to read up on other techniques and find what works best for you\n\nI’ll send around some links and book recommendations later\n\n[ CLICK ] \n\n\n
  10. Do your research - Understand your subject\n\ne.g. for this presentation I dipped in and out of these books that I have\n\nUnderstanding your subject will give you confidence in what you are saying\n\nThe familiarity with the topic removes the fear of saying something silly or getting a question you don’t understand.\n\nIf you do get a question you don’t know the answer to, don’t try to blag it. \n\nJust say that you don’t know and will find an answer after the talk and send it around.\n
  11. Plan your presentation\n\nWhat are the key messages that you want to get across to your audience?\n\n3 - 5 is about right\n
  12. Create a page/card for each slide\n\nDo it on paper\n - it’s easier to change!\n - you can play with the order\n - you can jot the key points for each slide\n - it’s a good way of getting your thoughts down\n\nWhat’s important here is that at no stage have you gone near a computer\nYou’re not constraining your thoughts by tools.\n\nYou’re creating a storyboard... and it’s important to tell a story\n\n\n\n
  13. When you’re happy that you’ve got you key messages and point together\n\nStart to design your slides\n\nI use the word design deliberately, as your slides are your trusty sidekick\n\nThey are the background music to your performance!\n\n\n
  14. Design is hard - which is why we have people that specialise in it\n\nBut there are fundamentals of design that anyone can apply\n\nWe have books in our library on these that I encourage you to read!\n\nhowever, there are 3 key tenets of the Zen aesthetic that I want to point out:\n\nKanso - or simplicity: keep your slides simple and free from noise\n\nShizen - or naturalness: don’t try to force a design\n\nShibumi - or elegance: elegant slides will lend further credibility to your words\n
  15. I’m not going to pick on Powerpoint the tool\n - it’s user error!\n\nif you want your presentation to stand out you need to be different\n\nCreativity and Design are integral to a great presentation\n - both in your message and in your slides\n\nYour slides should reinforce the point you are trying to make\nYour slides should reinforce the words you are saying - not repeat them!\n\nYour slides should create an emotional impact \n - Seth Godin presenting is a transfer of emotions\n\nIn general corporate templates constrain you and corral you into dull sameness\n\nMy challenge to you is:\n\n dare to step outside the norm and be different\n be different and create something great\n create something great and change the world\n\nPresentations are your chance to change things\n\n
  16. \nPractice, Practice, Practice\n\nIt sounds silly - but do dry runs of your talk\n\nRecord your practices and review them\n\nYou’ll notice things like how you’re standing, the speed you’re speaking at....\n\nIt also will help you get more familiar with the content of your talk and make you more confident\n\nPractice can be as simple as reviewing your slides and notes a dozen times before your presentation.\n\nAgain, it’s about being familiar and comfortable with what you are going to talk about\nIt’s about knowing, roughly, what you want to say!\n
  17. This is a great one - and one of the hardest one\n\nThis is about how you give your talk\n\nThis is about how you keep your audience engaged\n
  18. How do you keep the attention of an audience for the duration of your talk?\n\nThis is really about engagement. Keeping attention to get your message through\n\nPower!\n - you are the star of the show\n - use the advantage you have as the focus of attention to get your message through\n\nIt’s almost about showing off - a bit of swagger\n\nGood slide design will help\n - it sets the scene that your presentation is going to be different to the norm\n\nYour performance needs to start from when the first person enters the room to when the last person leaves\n - capture the attention from the beginning\n\n[ PAUSE ] \n\nHumans have a very short ability to concentrate on a single thing.\n - Mix things up a little\n - Inject something different to re-energise people (even for a short talk like this).\n\nSo, here’s a little attention challenge\n - I want you to count the Moby’s in the following clip!\n - Ok, ready?\n\n[ CLICK ]\n\n\n\n\n
  19. So, how many Moby’s?\n\n15\n\nThat was a tiebreaker from Never Mind the Buzzcocks\nIt made me laugh out loud when I saw it\nI’ve been trying to find a way to use it in a presentation ever since!\n\nThe point is though, that things like that inject new energy\nPeople feel a little more engaged\nIt’s also a little bit of fun!\n
  20. Studies show that :\n - 7% of human communication comes from words \n - 38% tone of the voice \n - 55% body language\n\nWords we’ve dealt with\n - do your research\n - familiarise yourself with the topic\n - distill your key messages\n - prepare your points and slides\n\nA good tip is to outline your plan at the very beginning\n - I’m going to talk for 45mins\n - first 10mins will be about so and so\n - next 10mins will be about blah...\n\nI want to deal with body language first... [CLICK]\n\n
  21. Body Language is a hard area, especially if you are not comfortable presenting\n - your natural instinct is to physically close up\n - your body naturally becomes tense as your adrenalin is running high (fight or flight response)\n\nHere are a couple of tips:\n- dress up. Feel great. Feel smart. Feel sexy. Feel in control.\n - it sounds silly, but it works. It puts you in a mentally better space to perform.\n\n- use a presenter remote control\n - it gives you something to do with your hands\n\n- use your hands\n - try not to put your hands in your pocket. It makes you look nervous and closed in.\n - free your hands up to naturally support what you are saying\n - your hands will automatically try and reinforce your words with movement\n - if this isn’t something that comes naturally then practice it\n - like good slides, your body movement reinforces the words you are using\n\n- make eye contact with people, \n -especially the ones most engaged with what you are saying\n - that will make you feel better\n - it will get their body language more engaged. They will lean forward and nod at points\n - we’re herd animals - others will copy them!\n\nFinally, and most importantly, be yourself. Be Natural\n - if you are relaxed and natural your message will get through better\n - you will put your audience at ease and get them engaged with what you are saying\n\n
  22. There a number of things you can do to help your tone of voice and the efficacy of your delivery\n\nAmerican politicians are well schooled in these\n\nPace - not too quick, not too slow (another case for recording yourself!)\n\nRhythm - try to get some rhythm into your delivery. \n- Speaking with rhythm injects more appeal into your words\n- a trick here is to use 3 word combinations\n- this injects a very PLEASANT, PERSUASIVE and PLEASING symmetry to a sentence \n\nRepetition - don’t be afraid to repeat the key point that you are trying to make. \n\nEmphasis - emphasise the RIGHT word in a sentence. \n - This is the point you are trying to make\n - reinforce it by stressing the word\n[ PAUSE ]\n\nPause - don’t be afraid of a little silence\n - pause between points - pause before making a new argument\n\nPassion - love what you’re talking about\n - passion is contagious\n - being passionate adds incredible credence to what you are saying\n\nAgain, remember, it’s a performance. \n\nTry and enjoy it - that will come through in your delivery.\n \n
  23. Review is easy\n\nAsk for feedback\n\nAsk people what they thought of your presentation\nAsk people for areas they feel could have been improved\n\nRecord your presentation\n - I’m using Silverback to record this one as I speak\n - videoing myself using the built in camera on the laptop\n\nIt’s really important to try and continually improve \n\nhone your presentation skills\n
  24. When things go wrong - and they will!\n\nHave a Plan B.\n\nTechnical Issues are your biggest concern.\n\nTry to get to the room early and set up - this will give you time to iron out issues\n\n- Print your notes.\n- Have a number of copies of your presention\n - copies on USB drive, email, dropbox\n\n- Know your key points\n - ultimately prepare to give your presentation without slides!\n\n\n\n
  25. \nAlways, always stand up.\n - Gives you a subconscious position of authority\n - Allows you to move freely\n\nUse a remote control\n - so you don’t have to fiddle with the computer\n - lets you step away from behind the podium and wander around\n - frees you\n\nTrack time\n - try to end early\n\nUse Presenter Notes\n - helps you to not turn your back on the audience\n - have key points there\n - put in prompts for action and pauses!\n\n[ show laptop screen to audience ]\n\nTry to clarify your points\n - cite specific references\n - gives more credibility\n\nTry to take a different angle on the topic you are speaking on\n - keeps it interesting and fresh\n\nInvolve people if you can\n - helps with engagement\n\n\n
  26. So, again my key themes are:\n\nPrepare\n - this presentation took around 12 hours, in total, to prepare\n\nPractice\n - this is the way to get really comfortable presenting\n\nPerform\n - to get your message through you need to treat a presentation like a performance\n\nReview\n - get feedback, record yourself, aim to get better\n\nPresenting is about changing people’s minds - it’s about inspiring people\n\nI believe that it’s about changing the world!\n
