3. RESEARCH – DEMOGRAPHIC
- When thinking about what I wanted to research, I knew that I need to look at two
demographic for it to be useful to my project. The demographic that does visit
York vs the demographic that tend to avoid visiting York.
- In my research on the demographic that are most likely to visit York, I saw that
they tend to be between ages of 45-64. The age group are known as ‘Baby
Boomers’ and ‘Gen x’. In my research, they noticed that they tend to be described
as resourceful, independent, outdoorsy, and they value stability and having a
balanced life between personal life and work life. This made me notice which
attraction in York they are most likely going to attend with family. For example,
everyone who visits York tend to enjoy walking around and enjoy York scenery.
Majority of this age group were the first generation to have personal technology.
However as technology advanced so quickly, the generation fell behind on keeping
up with what is up to date.
- The age demographic that tend to avoid York also happen to be the age group I
was trying to attract. The group are ages 12-14. they only visit for family trips,
nightlife and harry potter. The age group like to look for diversity and honesty.
They are technology generation and are very financially minded. York doesn’t
really attract any of these characteristics… in terms of diversity, York is very
diverse and one of the main things that is being diversity to York is education.
They are technology based and financially minding which York is and old and
historic city that is very expensive. However during my research, I did read that
The Shambles bring attract a lot of people in the age group as Harry Potter is apart
of British culture.
- I think the main differences between the age groups is how they consume and
then share different types of media. 18-24yr olds use social media to consume
most of there media and tend to find attractions through that. They then share
there experiences online which brings attracts more people within a similar age.
They like to follow trends so if something is popular, everyone will try to be apart
of it. The older generations consume media is a different way, usually by written
work that can be bought (newspapers, articles). They often tell friends and family
about their experiences and use social media just to keep in contact with people.
4. - The main reason why I chose to reason Hogwarts
mystery was because it was an interactive game that
was about harry potter. I knew at this point that I
wanted to link my work to harry potter and knew that
this game was very popular.
- I first researched the Harry Potter demographic so I had
an idea that the demographic would be the same as the
one I'm trying to bring into York. In a survey I looked
at, 81% of people who were ages 18-24 counted
themselves as harry potter fans.
- When looking at the game itself, I learnt how they used
familiar faces and referenced activities that were
referenced from the film and book. I think that the
game was so popular because they it was a new
experience for harry potter fans and allowed them to
RESEARCH – HOGWARTS
MYSTERY
5. RESEARCH – POKÉMON GO
- I chose to research Pokémon Go because it was a
mobile game that was combined with the real world. It
uses 3d mapping and location which is qualities I hope
to incorporate with my digital map. I think that
Pokémon Go was so popular due to the fact that it had
never been done before. It had the audience from the
ages that were teenager in mid 90s and then gained a
whole new audience. I really like how they used bright
colours which kept it authentic to the original game on
Game Boy. It had recognisable icons and was an easy
game to learn.
- It also gained a lot of traction by having so many
benefits. For example, doing low impact exercise and
travel in fresh air. It allowed this generation to look up
from their phone and travel to certain attractions where
they could collect better characters. The game created
a fictional world that could be seen Infront of you.
6. RESEARCH – THE
MARAUDERS
When researching Pokémon Go and Harry Potter Hogwarts
Mystery I started to form my idea and remember that in the
film and books, they have a map called the marauder map. I
then did some research in to looking who the marauders are
and why the marauders map is relevant.
I leant that the marauders were a bunch of Gryffindor
student that attended Hogwarts during James Potter’s time.
They often caused mischief and used the map to get around
without being noticed. The map shows the entire Hogwarts
campus including 9 secret passage ways.
It then lead to the idea of doing a York map inspired the
marauders map for harry potter fans. This would bring in
18-24yr harry potter fans to York to look at places like The
Shambles, The National Railway Station and York Mister. It
can also follow the maps aesthetic qualities that it uses in
the films and books.
7. GENRE YOU ARE WORKING
TO
The Harry Potter Films and books genres are fantasy, adventure,
drama and coming of age . Visually, it has a dark academia aesthetic
that contributes to the colors created in the film. The dark academia
aesthetic is an aesthetic that is associated with education, the arts,
gothic architecture and literacy. As the harry potter films go on,
visually they get darker as the story line depends. If you compare the
first film to last one, the first one is so much more vibrant and
colorful to the last one. The colors they use in the films are a lot of
browns, creams, and then the obvious different house colors. This
includes a burgundy red, a mustard shade of yellow, a dull blue and
a dark green.
I think its
important I
stick to the
color themes
that were
created in the
films so that
my audiences
feels a sese of
familiarity when
8. POTENTIAL SOFTWARES TO
USE
-The software I want to use for my app page illustrations
is called Krita. Krita is a graphic editor that is primarily
used for 2d animation and digital art. If I have any
problems with Krita, I will use photo shop as my backup.
The reason why I don’t want to use Photoshop to start
with is because I find krita easier to use in terms of the
precision of the tools I can use. I can use a pen as it is on
a tablet etc. however if the program doesn’t work,
photoshop is perfect as a backup.
-Adobe XD is the most suitable program to create
evidence for the app. It has the feature and tools for me
to create a believable app. I will use this during college,
but I have the program on my own laptop if it doesn’t
work. I will need to do more research on how to use the
program so I can achieve what I want.
9. CONVENTIONS OF YOUR
CHOSEN FORMAT
I'm choosing to make an app that I can include
photography. By making an mobile app, I need my layout
to follow a 16:9 ratio so that it constantly fills the screen.
The chosen media I am working in is so that I can try
make the project appeal to the right target audience. I
am choosing to create an app so that 17-24yr olds are
most likely to use it (as they are the primary consumers
of social medias). However I do think that my app will
attract other age groups as it is harry potter themed.
Because my chosen midea is a mobile app, I need the
format to be a 16:9 ratio so that the pages fit the screen.
I also need to create multiple pages of the app like a
leading screen, title pages etc.
10.
11. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
1. An opportunity for me is a chance to create different
media format that I’m not familiar with. It’s a chance to
design my own app and not create a film project.
2. the app creates an opportunity for promoting healthy
exercise and getting fresh air as it is majority an outdoor
walking experience.
3. The app supports local business that could
hypothetically they could use to attracted more people to
visit.
4. money in other tourist attracts and a general
ssightseeting attractions
Emersive and interative
12. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
1. the first restriction of my project I would be getting permission from
locations that photography can be taken there and used for the app.
Some places may not want to be associated with the app and not allow
photography for an app purpose.
2. if the app was real, the app would have to be able to work without
signal or Wi-Fi as it is an outdoors game. This limits If It would have to
use the internet and if its live.
3. a restriction to my project is a language barrier. The app is only
being made in English, however it is suppose to attract tourist. People
travelling to York and going to use the app may find it difficult to use if
its only in English.
4. the app would need to be constantly updated for new locations and
showing how busy the venue are etc. it would have to be constantly live
with would be difficult to achieve.
5. a possible restriction would be for disabled people in certain
locations. Some location would more fit for some people than others.
For example, the shambles is a tight, narrow cobblery street, so people
in wheelchairs would struggle.
13. FINAL IDEA – RATIONALE
This is an idea is on a subject that I'm familiar with which
helps with the creative part of the process. When I was
looking at other concepts, it was all on more unfamiliar
projects compared to this one, which is one of my
leading factor of why I chose to do this project. I feel like
I have the skills to create the visual aspects of the app as
I have an inspiration to go off. I am excited to be able to
design each page as its something that I haven’t been
able to do for college work and only been able to do in
my spare time. I enjoy making projects based off what I
my interests, which I am a big fan of the books which
makes me more excited to do this project.
14. FINAL IDEA – CREATIVE
CONCEPT
I want to make an app that is inspired the marauders
map from the harry potter books/movies to create a tour
guide for people of ages 17-24yrs around York. I want
the app to be in a 16:9 ratio, follow the color themes and
creative features that are shown in the films. This
includes fancy fonts, using banners, having the footstep
animations, etc. I need to do some research on which
handwriting I want to use on each page. I will have
difference pages which will display different features,
this includes an opening page, an app logo, the map
page and an upload image page. I need to be able to use
the program Krita and Adobe XD to create my concept.
The purpose is to act as a marauders themed map to
take you around York, which is created on an app so that
it is more accessible for my target audience. The app will
appeal to a large audience based on the popularity of
harry potter which is one of the leading factors of why I
have chosen to do this concept.
16. LOCATIONS
I need to go to multiple locations to check if they are
good locations for my app. I want to be able to take
photos so that I can use them for my designs on my app,
as well as what distance they are of each other. I want to
see if that weather can effect the experience and also
check pricing to make sure everything is affordable.
17. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
- York Minster – this will replicate the Hogwarts castle.
The York minister brings two million people to York
annually. I want the York minister to be one f my
locations as it looks similarly to architecture that is
shown in harry potter. It is free and doesn’t have any
requirements to visit inside, as well as has many places
outside the minster to take photos. The weather
shouldn’t affect the activity, however doing it in warm
weather would probably be preferable. On the contrary, a
lot of the films are set in the winter/colder times of the
year and some class harry potter as a Christmas films, so
visiting York minister during colder reasons may feel
more harry potter themed. The York Minster is busier
during the weekends and quieter during the week. It is
also busier during school holidays; however, the York
minister is not very over crowed and is a very friendly
place.

19. THE SHAMBLES
York shambles

Harry Potter
illustration
Including York shambles into the
app was a must. When researching,
it was one place that I saw brought a
lot of people to York (of all ages). It
is very well known in York and for
visitors that the shambles may have
been an inspiration for Diagon Ally
in the harry potter films. Down the
small street, it has multiple harry
potter themed shops and signs, and
old-fashioned sweet, pastry and Tea
shops. There is also two side streets
that lead straight to the shambles
market.
The shambles do have many great
features but also has some not so
good features. The shambles is a
busy street, and it doesn’t help that
is so narrow and small. The
shambles being busy and small does
make it more authentic and feel like
you are in harry potter during the
first film and book, however it may
put people off. It is also even busier
during wintertime as the shambles
make sure to decorate for the
holiday. The coast of items and
goods in the shops aren’t very
affordable and overpriced, but that
doesn’t seem to put people off too
21. York has its own crazy golf that has a theme to
wizarding. It follows all the harry potter conventions and
you can get butter bear at the end of it. The gold course
is extremely interactive. The course allows you to
complete spells, become part of a picture, pass magical
portals etc. by the end of the course you find out
whether you have the power to be a wizard.
The main reason why I want to include the wizarding
gold is that it is on theme and very affordable. It allows
people to have a break from the sight seeing and do an
activity with family and friends. This is also an inside
tourist attraction so if its bad weather then people can
stay indoors for a few hours. This is also in the centre of
town so its easily accessible to the other locations and
has food and shops near by.

23. What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this?
The railway museum will be representing platform 9 ¾
from harry potter. The national railway museum is very
popular for people to coming visit York. This is an
interactive activity that is indoors and is very accessible
for all age groups. It also is free; however the café and
different ‘merch’ item do coast money. People usually
spend about 2-3 hours here so this activity can be quite
time consuming for people that are visiting for a day. My
app is guide to which locations to visit. I may create
different information pages explaining the positives and
negatives of each location, so this would include that this
activity take about 2-3 hours.
LOCATIONS - RAILWAY
MUSEUM
25. The York museum gardens is a free place for the public to sit,
eat and relax. The garden is next to the River Ouse and was
the former grounds of St Mary’s Abby. The garden is free;
however, the museum does cost money if people want to visit.
This is in the center of York and has lots of café, restaurants
and stores all within walking distance. A limitation with this
venue is that during holidays and weekends, the museum
gardens can be busy. This venue is also completely outside so
if it is bad weather, it may not be the best place to enjoy.
I want this location to be used as I see similarities with
Hagrid’s hut and farm. It also resembles the ruins of Hogwarts
after the war as there are lots of ruins of the architecture there
in the gardens.
LOCATIONS - MUSEUM
GARDENS
26. I have chosen the minster gardens for two reason. One
being that the minster garden have a great view of the
minster but in a more relaxed and quiet area. The other
reason is that it has a tree planted there that remind me
of the whomping willow shown in the harry potter films.
A positive about this location is that it usually is a lot
quieter than the museum gardens but still is a beautiful
place to relax. It is also free, has the minster right Infront
of you and is withing walking distance of lots of cafes,
restaurants and shops.

29. CONCEPT BOARD
DISCUSSION/EXPLANATION
The concept board follows the color theme of what I
would like to stick with. There is a lot of browns, creams,
neutral dull colors. I want to use these colors because
they are what I found are most common throughout the
whole harry potter movie series. I have included some
different types of maps. Some maps have icons which
show the most important locations which is something I
want to follow through in my own idea. Other maps are
extremely details and have hand drawn illustrations which
is a feature I want to attempt in my own work. There are
some pictures that are from York that look like they could
be Harry Potter, they are locations that I am using in my
tour. I finally have some general visuals I want to include.
For example, the footsteps which is an illustration that I
want to have for my loading screen. There is also the
famous slogan from harry potter ‘ I solemnly swear, I am
30. FEATURES
Footprints – these footprints are to show
where people are on the map and follow
different routs. I think adding them to my
design will help create some familiarity to
watching the end credit scene. It is a key
feature in the films and books, so I want to
make it a key feature for my project.
Banners – the banners are used for
the iconic phrase ‘ I solemnly swear,
I am up to no good.’ and for names
in the credit scene. I want to use
these banners for titles for each
page. For example, I want to have
my “map” title screen in one of
those banners.
Writing and Designs – this is something I
want to try in my experiments but I do not
know if it will happen. I think doing the
writing could over complicate it, however if I
am able to do it, it will make it more
authentic. It will be the outline of streets.
31. COLOURS
Colour themes are so important to create some
sort of familiarity. Sticking to this colour
themes is going to help Harry Potter fans
associate the app to the films and books even
more as well as the other aesthetic qualities. I
think I should stick to the neutral colours and
that is common throughout all the series. I do
want to try add the house colours to the app as
I think that no matter if you are a harry potter
fan, you are aware that they are 4 houses that
follow this colour theme.
32. MOCK UPS
Here are some basic pages I have mocked up to give
myself a guide on the general gist of what I want it to
look like. I think researching some aesthetic features that
I want to include has helped me quickly mock up some
designs I had in my head and put them into I design I
can actually see. You can see colour themes I want to do,
you can see the how I link it back to York and you can
see the different pages order.
33. MOCK - THE APP COVER
The app cover is going to be similar to the opening page. This is the
cover that will display on the home screen of your phone and will be
the first thing you see of the app. I want to make it clear that it is for
York so making the cover include York minster could be more
beneficial than doing York shambles. I think using the York shambles
in the cover would be confusing as the street looks very similar to the
one create in the harry potter universe. I may change the title as I
think it is very similar to the original
and I want to my project to be
a inspired by the marauders
map, not a copy. I know I
want to have a red text
background to represent
Gryffindor.
34. APP OPEN PAGE

Book
opening
The opening page will be similar to the
app cover to show that it is a map once
you click it. I would like it to have a
transition where you click to page and it
transitions to the next page as I it was a
book opening to reference the books.
The next page
35. OPTION PAGE
This is the options page that will
display the function of the app. I
am going to make a map page
where the users will see all harry
potter themed places. The other
page is an upload page where you
can take a photo of yourself there
to add too the map. The page will
have the marauders feet for
familiarity. Based on time and if I
am able to do it, I want to be able
to make the feet move just how
they do in the credit scene of
Prisoner Of Azkaban.
36. THE MAP
The map will follow the same colour
scheme that is shown throughout the
app. This includes tea bagged old
textured paper, the burgundy red ink,
and familiar harry potter icons. I plan
on tracing the York map from google
maps, focuses on the main streets and
then outlining the streets with letters.
This will probably be the page that will
take more time to complete as it has a
lot more smaller details. I want to also
have the icons in this burgundy ink
colour. The map should cover the
parts of York that I want my user to
visit, nothing extra.
37. ICONS - MAP
Hole In The Wand – for this icon I am thinking
doing something to do with quidditch as it is the
sport that is celebrated in harry potter.
Minster gardens – the minster gardens will have the
womping willow as an icon as in the minister
gardens, there are many trees and green scenery.
Minster – I want Hogwarts to be represented as the
minster. The minster has York's biggest tourist
attraction and brings the most people to York. It is
what is associated with York which is why I thin it
should be referenced as Hogwarts.
The shambles – for the shambles, I want the
Weasley shop to represent diagon ally. I thought
about doing the wand shop as in the shambles,
they have signs that reference it. However I felt like
the Weasley shop was more familiar as an icon
logo.
Railway station – the railway station will have
platform 0 ¾ as it is incredible Iconic for harry
potter fans.
38. FONTS
By doing research, they is no one that knows the actual
font that is used for the marauders map in Harry Potter.
A lot of the one that are similar cost money or are far
from what I want.
Some fonts that I have researched that I may use are:
The Marauders Map - Apple Chancery
The Marauders Map
- inkpot
The Marauders Map –
39. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Page 1 – app logo (will be an outline drawing of the minster or the
shambles with a title of the project and written in the burgundy red
colour. Will be on old looing paper texture and will look like its been
hand written.)
Page 2 – app opening page (a copy of the apps logo but it will be more
of a realistic version, this includes looking like more ruff papr like being
folded and crumples.)
Page 3 – app loading screen (this is will have the icon marauders on it
with the marauder feet on it. It will obviously have some sort of loading
icon to go with it.)
Page 4 – option menu (this page will have text boxes of the two apps
main functions. This will also have the feet to go with it that would
hopefully be animated to move)
Page 5 – York Map ( the York map will be a map that visually looks like
the one the marauders use. I want to have recognisable icons to
represent each location. I also want to try recreate some visual features
of from the marauders map, like outlining streets with writing and using
banners. I want this page to pop up with information facts soo it can
link to York.)
Page 6 – upload page (this will be a standard camera page that can
replace the icons once taken to prove that you have been there.)
41. CONTINGENCY PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
42. CONTINGENCY PLAN
Issue Plan
Loss of work Upload all work onto one drive after each
session, put on autosave throughout the
process. Also if working at home, make
sure it is saving to one drive.
Time consuming on
unnecessarily work
Plan/research through day off college if it
becomes a problem
Headaches/screen stare Take necessary break to reduce heading ad
screentime, also low brightness.
