The title of the Week 4 Class--Evidence Informed Practice in a Technology Enhanced
Workplace—stirred a reaction in me. It brought me back to a time in first year
during a guest lecture by Dr. Cheryl Forchuk. Cheryl was talking about
Peplau’s interpersonal theory. I loved the idea about nursing being a healing
art and many other of the aspects of Peplau’s theory I couldn’t shake the
thought in my head that
“Although I respect Peplaus ideas and other ideas from Nursing
thoerists, I can’t help but wonder how this applies to the real world of
nursing. I just feel that although the ideas in these theories are good
ones, it just isn’t the hegemony of the business type model of the
hospital business”

I just felt that these ideas were very out of my grasp at this
moment, and couldn’t stop thinking that we are learning these
ideas now because its n our curriculum but once we get to our
nursing practice were not going to be in circumstances where
practicing nursing theories is supported. I recognized that these
ideals were not hegemonic of most nurses. When I talked to Dr.
Forchuk about this she brought up a term I was familiar of it but
I had not quite appreciated the importance of. This term was:

Dr. Cheryl counteracted my question by talking about objectifying the caring portion
of nursing. If we continue to research and are able to provide proof that the caring
portion of nursing produces results then we can incorporate these ideas to the meso
level. This revolutionized my ideas about evidence-based practice. I felt that
often in the first year of nursing, many students (including me sometimes) just
wanted to focus on the practical aspects of nursing. Alas, from this point on I realized
how important have a theoretical based nursing practice was. I embraced and
appreciated the attainment of more theoretical knowledge from this point on.
In conclusion, my initial reaction to the class on Evidence Informed Practice
in a Technology Enhanced Workplace is one of excitement because of the
aforementioned background and relationship I have to the topic. As I find this whole
grey issue of social media overwhelming at times, I am looking forward to learning
about being more evidence based in this field as it will enhance my competency in this
area!

INTERPRETING/RESPONDING TO
DIFFERENT IDEAS AND
PERSPECTIVES FROM CLASS
I came into the class hoping to make social media ethical issues black or white, (or be able
to see the right or wrong). I left the class with awareness that when issues arise, we as
nurses to continuously educate ourselves and have evidence informed opinions so that we
are better able to navigate our way through these ethical issues. In order to become better
nurses we need to be continuously thirsting for knowledge. Throughout the class I
cultivated an understanding that although many of these social media related issues are in a
grey area, we must have evidence informed opinions. This realization came during the class
activity where two groups debated whether or not it was ethical to Google a patient’s name.
I strongly felt that it was not okay to Google a patient’s name. I was shocked as the majority
thought that it was okay to research the client. I felt that by researching the patient it would
interfere with providing them the care that they deserve, and that every person —regardless
of their past—deserves to have unbiased care.

DIFFERENT IDEAS AND
PERSPECTIVES FROM CLASS
Evidence Informed Opinion
By googling a patients name I felt that it would taint the nurses perception of the client
and this would result in undesired patient outcomes. The viewpoint that nurses
perception of a client will be altered upon learning about the clients passed is made
evident by Rash and Winton as they state that sex offenders are often marginalized and
stigmatized by nurses (2006). When nurses marginalize and stigmatize clients it results
in negative patient outcomes. Corey and Gorlen (1998) classify this as the “Dark Side
of Nursing”. The dark side of nursing occurs when nurses negatively stereotype
patient behavior, attitudes, and characteristics in a stigmatizing way. “Dark Side of
Nursing” behaviors are described as when nurses are “…hostile, angry, or
interpersonally distancing responses to patients, minimizing or voiding patient contact,
and failing to provide care the patient needs…” (Corey & Gorlen, 1998, para. 3). These
behaviors do not contribute to the well being of patients, and thus it fails to reflect the
moral obligation of a nurse to provide care (Corey and Gorlen, 1998). This was the
viewpoint that I had during class. I felt that by googling the patients name we are more
likely to stigmatize, marginalize, stereotype and label the patient, and as a result it
would affect the patients care. A client who has sexually abused others deserves to be
treated with respect, dignity and is entitled to receive the same kind of care as
everybody else, and by googling them we are infringing on their rights to be cared for
in an unbiased manner.

New Perspectives on the Ethical Issue: Is it Okay to Google a Patients Name?
I brought up the discussion we had during the Evidence Informed
Practice in a Technology Enhanced Workplace class today at lunch as I was
interested in what other perspectives were. Upon conversation with Mary—a
social worker whom specializes in the reintegration of people who have
offended sexually into society—I gained a new perspective on the idea of
googling a patient. By talking out this scenario and through further reflection
and insight I have a new viewpoint. I now feel that if this situation were to
arise it would be okay to Google the patient. On the next slide is an audio
recording of an interview I did with Mary.
