Abstract
This study indicates that a lack of awareness exists amongst students attending
the Educational Technology Department at the College of Basic Education in the
Public Authority for Applied Education and Training in Kuwait in regards to
academic advising and guidance. Therefore, this study aims to measure the
impact of the use of Smartphone interactive applications and technologies in the
field of academic advising and guidance on the students’ culture; and the ability
of this type of application in increasing their level of awareness. In order to
achieve that goal, this study focuses on the following: identifying the knowledge
level of the students with respect to the rules and regulations of their course of
study; identifying the knowledge level among students in regards to rules and
regulations of their study in relation to gender and academic achievement;
measuring the impact resulting from the use of Smartphone applications on the
level of students knowledge regarding rules and regulations of their study; and
assessing the quality and suitability of these types of applications for use in the
field of academic advising and guidance. The study adopted Action Research as
a research methodology .Results of the study indicate that the majority of
students assume and think that they have sound knowledge about rules and
regulations related to the registration process. Results also indicate that the
principal consultant for students in preparing the course schedule, registration,
and all related rules and regulation are their peers. In regards to students’
gender, the results suggest that differences exist among the students. Male
students reflect a higher level of knowledge than female students in regards to
registration, plan of study, and specifically in the overall Grade Point Average
(GPA) calculations. Evidence indicates that the rate of student achievement is
not linked to the extent of knowledge regarding the institutions' rules and
regulations, study plan, registration, and GPA calculation. Finally, results of this
study indicate that the Smartphone application did not have a direct impact on
improving the level of students' knowledge regarding their study’s rules and
registration, although results indicate that the application has a high level of
acceptance and evaluation among students. At the conclusion of the study, the
researchers offer some recommendations based on their findings.
