Introduction: ROLE

• ROLE project
– Creating own Personal Learning Enviromments (PLE)
– Based on widgets from the ROLE Widget Store
– Technical infrastructure for creating PLEs
• Widget Container (ROLE SDK)
• Contextual Attentation Metadata (CAM) for user logging
• Inter-widget communication (IWC)
• Storage of user and space data
– Psycho-pedagogical model
• Support for self-regulated learning on different levels

Purpose and Goal

• recommend widgets for PLEs, to get a PLE suitable for SRL
• appraoch is based on an an ontology of learning activities

SRL Ontology

• Ontology consists of learning strategies and techniques
• Service for searching the ontology with SPARQL queries

– network of SRL-related entities
– functionalities are connecting entities with widgets
• Template
– set of entitites of the SRL ontology

Pedagogical Meaning

• Learner get recommendations for widgets
– according to learning activities; explanation how widget should be
used
• Teacher / tutor can create templates for courses
– pedagogical knowlege in template
• Guidance strategy through templates
– different levels between guidance and freedom possible
• Ensurance that widgets for different (meta-cognitive)
learning activities are available
– e.g. the four phases or specific cognitive activities
• No information about learning sequences
• Widget Store as widget available
– PPIM expressed in Widget Store categories


Evaluation

• Evaluated by 29 teachers in two workshops (NEXT-TELL
workshop and AHA Konferenz)
• Qualitative and qunatitative feedback
• Qualitiative feedback: helpful for SRL and its meta-cogntive
aspects; helpful if great number of widgets available


Conclusion

• Mashup Recommender
– helps to create own PLE suitable for SRL
– based on a template / learning ontology approach
– all components have open interfaces – can be used by other tools
– overall evaluation result quite positive

• Next steps
– recommendations based on usage data
– recommendations based on learning goals (widgets can be
associated with domain concepts)
