Too good to be true?
I had the opportunity to meet LinkedIn’s CEO Jeff Weiner in Singapore on Friday of last week and the
discussion reinforced to me the significant value that we can create in our business by opening up to
new ideas and trying new things.
Mon 21 Oct
At LinkedIn, Jeff is creating what he calls “the web's largest and most powerful network of
professionals” with 238 million members globally including, for example, 80% of professionals in
Australia.
Since we opened up staff access to LinkedIn at the end of July, around 3,000 additional ANZ staff
have joined LinkedIn which means that around 25,000 of our staff are now part of this network and at
least a third of them are now accessing LinkedIn at work each day.
We already use LinkedIn as a recruitment tool and to build brand awareness, and in Australia we are
also using it to engage the small business community. I was also invited to join LinkedIn’s global
Influencer Program and you can see my contributions by following me on LinkedIn.

We have come a long way quickly, but Jeff emphasised to me how a more unified strategy with
LinkedIn can create a competitive advantage for ANZ. I have to say that the recent Board visit to
Silicon Valley turned me from sceptic into a believer about LinkedIn and it’s now very clear that we
have to move quickly as digital and the social web are going to be a total game changer for business.
I have asked Corporate Communications to lead a collaborative effort to accelerate our adoption of
social media. With LinkedIn we are going to see rapid progress in optimising our existing ANZ
company page – where we already have 75,000 followers – using thought leadership to build
connections and an audience, and in increasing employee engagement with LinkedIn. In marketing,
as well as advertising, we are also looking at how we leverage LinkedIn as a prospect and sales
platform.
This isn’t just about top down though. In our meeting, Jeff encouraged us to engage our staff with
LinkedIn and provided me with three further steps to take.
1. Have all our staff complete a profile on LinkedIn. You can find guidance and tips below
which will be helpful for new and existing LinkedIn users.
2. Ask our people to update their connections.
3. Help our staff engage on the platform with guidelines or a playbook for using it.
The first two of these things you can all do right now – and for our part we’ll ensure we have these
guidelines available for you in the next month.
With best wishes,
