Slides from the third of my 3 part series classes at General Assembly in London on the 7th of August 2013. https://generalassemb.ly/education/designing-for-multiple-devices-3-part-series/london/2172 ABSTRACT This 90-minute session will focus on designing for touch across devices - including hybrids - as well as the challenges and opportunities of responsive content. We will cover how to find a balance between controlling layouts and making your products as responsive as possible. By the end of the session you'll have an understanding of: - the different ways people physically hold and interact with their devices - how hybrid devices impact design decisions - why the mobile context matters and what you need to consider - how to adapt content to device layout and orientations - using content as the basis for breakpoints rather than devices - and a framework to use as the starting point for approaching modular and responsive design from an information architect (IA) and user experience (UX) point of view

An introduction to social media, meant to get the focus off of tools and technology. Giving some examples of earlier technology introductions and their effect on society, we think about the changes Social Media bring. We show how the internet has evolved, clarify this with several examples and show the incredible pace of these changes in some videos. All with a little help of Bob Dylan.

[Substantially redesigned and updated content from a previous slide deck with the same title.] Slides to support a workshop on visual thinking across the curriculum at the MADLAT Conference. Winnipeg, Manitoba, May 2013. Over 80% of our brains are used interpreting visuals. It seems a waste not to take advantage this powerful channel into the minds of our students. What sorts of ways can a single image be used to tell stories and explore complex ideas in Math, Science, Language Arts or Languages classrooms? What could we do with a series of pictures? How can we do this beyond the time and space of the classroom walls and have our students generate a bank of powerful visuals to inspire future students to create even more powerful learning imagery? In this hands on session participants will mash up their ideas with powerful images, painlessly share them with the group and spend the lion’s share of our time together thinking deeply and discussing our shared vision for what real learning looks like in our classrooms. We’ll touch on ideas of ethical and responsible use of technology, creative commons and some thoughts about visual design. Bring your camera enabled mobile device. We’re gonna use it. And show you how to take better pictures in the process.

Innovation is driven by hope and fear. By humans dreaming of a better place. Emerging technologies are maintaining scale and deflation, accelerating the pace of change, having a profound impact on how societies, institutions, businesses and individuals interact. Emerging societal, economical and political realities are reshaping how we perceive the future, mapping dynamics closer to those of emerging markets. Emerging values of trust, openness and nodal relationships are re-structuring the agora, the marketplace of ideas and goods. The emergence of new identities, facilitated by technologies and enabled by new values, is the new revolution. A peer-to-peer revolution. Talk given at the Europe Venture Summit, Startup AddVenture, in Kiev, Ukraine, on December 2013. On a personal note, this is the fourth time I've given a similar presentation, surrounded by an atmosphere of uprising, after Athens, Rio de Janeiro and Bangkok.
