the Arabian Peninsula and South Asia.
Grey wolves are different shades of grey.
Living together
Wolves live in groups called packs. A pack is usually 6-7 wolves. In the pack
they all help each other to survive. They all hunt together; two wolves push
the prey while the rest try to surround it.
Raising Pups
In the pack only the dominant male & female breed. They breed in late winter
so the pups are born in spring. In the litter there are usually 4-6 pups. The pups
are born with black fur and blue eyes. Pups are born in a den like hollow log or a
cave.
Pups leave the den when they are 1 month old. The other wolves surround and
howl to meet them when they come out, they all wag their tails and lick each
other.
Pups play a lot. Play fights make pups fit and strong and they find their own
ranks like that. They nip the bigger wolves ears and tails, they also like to
pounce on sticks & stones
Communication

Wolves don’t howl and the
moon stupid! They do it to
communicate. Wolves also
whimper and yelp they use
their tails and facial
expressions too.
History
Dog like mammals have existed for about 37 million years. The Dire wolf lived
over 10,000 years ago it was bigger that the grey wolf and it had teeth that could
break Mammoth bones.

Eucyon lived about 8 million years
ago. It lived on the plains of North
America it was the ancestor of the
   wolves, coyotes & jackals.
Hunting and Diet
Wolves hunt lots of animals and sometimes people their main prey are hooved
animals like deer, if they must they will hunt rodents.
One or two wolves push the prey while the others surround it, the wolves bite
the preys neck so it loses blood & air then it dies.
Fear of the Wolf

You’ve heard the stories, Little Red Riding Hood, The three little pigs, the boy who
cried wolf. Well they’re wrong, wolves don’t eat people and they can’t blow
down houses. And werewolves? You’ve got to be kidding, they’re not real.

Historically people have posed the biggest threat to Wolves and not the other
way round. Wolves have been hunted, trapped, poisoned & shot to near
extinction. They used to be the most widely distributed mammal in the world.
Now there numbers are greatly reduced and many are still under threat of
extinction. Today the wolf is a protected animal.
