world's largest aluminium rolling company and one of the

3. OVERVIEW
 The Late Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru formally inaugurated the Renusagar Power Plant in
January 1963. Going round the extensive works, Panditji saw his dream of a brighter future of India
take shape before his eyes. From the modest beginning in 1962, Hindalco has now become an
industrial giant with a capacity to produce 2, 42,000 tones of aluminium per annum.
 The Hindustan Aluminum Corporation Limited was established in 1958 by the Aditya Birla Group. In
1962 the company began production in Renukoot in Uttar Pradesh making 20 thousand metric tons
per year of aluminium metal and 40 thousand metric tons per year of alumina. In 1989 the company
was restructured and renamed Hindalco

5. HINDALCO BUSINESS
 Hindalco in India enjoys a leadership position in aluminium and copper. The Company's aluminium
units across the country encompass the entire gamut of operations from bauxite mining, alumina
refining, aluminium smelting to downstream rolling, extrusions, foils and alloy wheels, along with
captive
power plants and coal mines. The Birla Copper unit produces copper cathodes, continuous cast
copper rods along with other by-products, including gold, silver and DAP fertilizers.
 All of Hindalco's units are ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001 certified. Several units
have gone a step further with an Integrated Management System (IMS), combining ISO 9001, ISO
14001 and OHSAS 18001 into one Business Excellence Model.
 The company has been accorded the Star Trading House status in India. Its aluminium metal is
accepted for delivery under the High Grade Aluminium Contract on the LME (London Metal Exchange),
while its copper quality standards are also internationally recognized and registered on the LME with
Grade “A” accreditation.

9. TECHNOLOGY USED IN HINDALCO INDUSTRIES
• Fusion technology is a new process that simultaneously casts multiple
alloy layers into a single aluminium rolling ingot. This makes automobile
parts very strong, less corrosive but lighter in weight compared to steel.
"European carmakers Audi and BMW had used Novelis' fusion
technology to make lighter cars
• Thanks to the technology, there is a remarkable difference in weight
which comes in handy for bigger cars like Audi." While big cars like
Audi weigh about 750 kg, small cars like Maruti weighs 850 kg.
Though the cost of the aluminium alloy used in fusion technology is
higher, it can be offset by the weight advantage.

• Hindalco, at Renukoot, houses a fully integrated plant, comprising of 3 main plants i.e. the
Alumina, Smelter & Fabrication Plants. Each plant employee varying Technology, with
integrated facilities, output from various plants is used by next, along with varying raw
materials
• Alumina Plant :- Alumina plant is play most important role in manufacturing of
alumina
The plant has been expanded in phases using new technology from time to time for
energy efficiency and capacity enhancement. It employs the basic Bayer’s process
and the major raw materials for the plant are Bauxite, Steam, Caustic Soda and
Furnace oil.
• Aluminium Smelter (Reduction of alumina): - The Smelter employs the Hall
Heroult Electrolysis Process for the extraction of Aluminium from Alumina. Basic raw
materials for the smelter are Alumina, Power, Anodes and Aluminium Fluoride.

11.  Fabrication Plant (Value Added Products): - The Fabrication Plant at Renukoot comprises of 4
Main Sections Remelt Shop, Cast House, Rolling Mills, Extrusion & Conform which produce
Wire Rod, Sheets, Coils and Extruded Product .
