- The survey found that the target audience for the music video was evenly split between male and female, allowing the creators to include ideas from both genders.
- While grime was a niche genre, most peers favored hip-hop, rap, and pop. The creators planned to incorporate elements of other popular genres into their grime music video to appeal to more people.
- Most of the target audience listens to music on YouTube, so the creators planned to distribute their music video there for wide accessibility.
1. Q1)
Grime is quite a niche genre and is stereotypically aimed at a male audience. From my
data I can see that out of 47 answers, 48.94% were female and 51.06% were male; this
tells me that a quite even percentage of both genders are taking part in my survey. This
is helpful as I will be able take ideas from both genders and include them into me and
my partner’s music video, as we are trying to make our music video attractable to our
target audience.
2. Q2)
As you may be aware me and my partners chosen genre is Grime, but we thought it was essential to know
what genres are favoured by peers in our 6 form. From 44 responses Hip-Hop was the favoured genre with
36.36% votes, Rap having 18.16% and Pop having 9.09%. Grime was joint 4th with 6.82% votes; from this I can
infer that Grime is not a very favourable genre amongst my peers. Initially this knocked my partner and I back a
bit because it was brought to our intention that Grime is not a favourable genre, but we have decided to use
this in our favour by including conventional elements from other genres such as Hip-Hop add it to Grime, in
order to make our music video more attractive to a wider audience. This can include the appearance of Danny
Billz to the representation/colour of our narrative.
3. Q3)
The intentions of this question was to help me and my partners promotional and distributional side of our
music video, this so we can be aware of what platform our audience listen to music on. As expected out of
44 answers 66.91% of them were for YouTube, this was ideal as this is the platform we want to distribute
our music video on. YouTube is the most efficient way to distribute our music video, as it is easily
accessible for our audience to watch our video, and as we can see from the majority of votes, everyone is
aware of its existence. This question also helped us with the marketing aspect of our music video as we
are now aware that 6.82% of our audience are still listening to music via CD, even though it is a small
percentage, my partner and I still have ambitions of creating a Digipak, in order to express the artistic side
to our production team.
4. Q4)
This question was important in terms of the promotional side of our music video, out of 44 answers not to our
surprise 72.73% of that favour towards hearing about music videos on social networking. This came as no surprise
to me and my partner as consumers of a niche genre like Grime, we mainly hear about music via social networking
sites such as Twitter, as it is an easy but effective way to promote your music through functions such as ‘re-tweets’.
As well as having a Digipak, me and my partner was deciding if we should also bring out a website or a poster
advert. Unfortunately, both websites and adverts share a percentage of 27.27%, therefore as from living in an era
where everything is becoming digital, we have decided to make a website as we feel it will be more accessible to
our target audience.
5. Q5)
This may seem like an obvious question, but it was mainly used as reinsurance just to make sure our
target audience like watching music videos, as some people prefer to just hear vocals and not see
any footage. To our relief 86.36% of the votes were towards liking music videos, so therefore we can
go ahead with making a music video.
6. Q6)
The answers from this question will indicate to me and my partner if a negative or positive theme within our music
video will affect their perception on Danny Billz. Out of 42 votes, the given choices of ’Yes’ and ‘No’ were equally
shared at 50%, which technically is not really any help to our perception of our audiences views. From reading
responses below, I have gathered that our target audience generally believe the music video paints the persona of
the artist. As our music video is a narrative of our protagonist artist telling the story of his hard life, I hope that my
audience we feel sorry for Danny Billz, because of his unfortunate experiences.
7. Q7)
This was quite a broad question in the fact that some audiences don’t have a specific thing that they like from a
music video – this is the reason why we allowed our audience to pick more than one. All these features will
apply to our music video, apart from a ‘Dance Routine’ as this does not really fit the Grime genre, as will
correlate with our chosen narrative within our music video. From 43 answers 60.47% of our answers were
favoured towards lyrics being the best thing that attracts people, this is helpful as me and my partner are aware
that we need to emphasise on lyrics, in terms of reflecting the lyrics within the action in the music video.
8. Q8)
The idea of me and my partner’s music is to show a narrative of Danny Billz’ life, portraying his hard
upbringing. Therefore this question was to reinsure us that our target audience like the narrative to
relate with the lyrics, 75% out of 44 answers favoured towards people liking visual imagery relating to
lyrics.
9. 9)
This question shows me and my partner that our target audience don’t really like to buy or download
music, which benefits us in some way as we know now that distributing our music video on YouTube
will be the prime way to allow our audience to watch the music video.
10. Q10)
In our music video there is a constant occurrence of swear words, and some sexual language that some of our
audience might find offensive, but as our target audience is mainly teenagers, they are mature enough to listen
to this type of music and I am sure that it is nothing that they have not heard before. Fortunately, out of 43
answers 63.49% agreed that taboo language does not put them of from watching the music video.
