How Do Jobs Affect Students?

Notas del editor

  1. Read the title.
  2. Teenagers already have a busy schedule, and a jobs will just add more to that list. A teenager shouldn’t be worrying about jobs and money at such a young age. Though a job can teach them responsibility, time management, and money management the jobs still take time away from studying. A job can prepare a teen for the real world, but that should not be their main focus. A job can lead into a teenagers caring and worrying more about the job than school, therefore the teen might drop out of school. Before a teen makes a commitment for the job they should understand the many drawbacks.
  3. Jill L. Ferguson is a woman that has studied teenagers with jobs, she teaches students, she writes articles, and she is also an editor. This quote is from one of her studies, she has proven that teenagers having jobs after school can lead into higher dropout rates, and teenagers’ grades affected negatively. She did state that there are positive affects of jobs, but that does not make up for the affects of the negative ones. A teen might be able to juggle their time, but the second their grades are decreasing they should quit the job and focus just on school. It is much harder to raise grades after they have decreased than to just keep them at the same place.
  4. Generally when a teenager works it is just for the money. Very few cases they work after school because their family is struggling, if this is very sad because the teen’s social life is being taken away from them because their parents can not provide for the family. Also they will be worrying more about the money than school. For other teenagers, they do not have to work and if they do they are generally worrying more about the money than school work. Once a teenager gets a job they have committed to the employer and they must go to work when they are assigned. Unfortunately not all of the employers will be lenient with the times so they might nit have enough time to do the homework.
  5. Scott Elliot is another writer, he writes for The Dayton Daily News. He has written an article about teenage jobs. Elliot is saying that jobs can change the way kids act, maybe because of lack of sleep, influence of the people they are around, and there are many other factors that can influence the teen in a negative way. It is possible that the jobs is located in a bad part of town, therefore a teen could be exposed to drugs or alcohol while on the job. When a teenager doesn’t do their homework, and their grades start to decrease the teacher might try to talk to them. The problem is the teen might not care and all the teacher can do is ignore it and worry more about other kids who care.
  6. There are always the few student that excel at everything they do. These students will make time for everything. There are not many of these students because often teenagers are slackers and don’t want to do what they are told. If a teenager has a job they must remember that their future is more important than a couple of extra dollars here and there. A teenager, even the few excelling ones, will always have difficulty with having to keep up with the job and school. There are also some students that have a job, school work, and an after school activity. These students will be very crunched for time because the sports are generally right after school, then they would have to go to work, then come home and do their school work. They would leave very little time for a social life and sleeping. Sleeping is a very key part of a teenagers’ growth and they need enough sleep.
  7. Melissa Kelly is another author that has written about what she thinks about teenagers having jobs. She has been teaching al kinds of students for years. This is what she thinks happens to kids that have had or have jobs. The jobs teach a teenager responsibility because they will have to learn to make time for everything. The only problem is the teen might not always save up or give the money to the parents if they are struggling. They might want to keep it for themselves so that they can go out with friends. If a teen gets a job they will not have as much time to spend with the family.
  8. After studying this topic the conclusion is that the different teenagers’ grades will be affected differently. It all depends on the teenager that has the job, for some their grades will stay the same, and for others their grades will decrease. There is no way to say that a teenagers will decrease, all that can be said is they have a high chance of decreasing. Also, the amount the grades will be affected depends on the amount of time the teenager spends at work and how much time they spend doing their homework. There is no way to say that all teens are affected negatively, also each teenager has a different academic standards. For some teenagers an C,D, or F is ok. For others those grades are not acceptable and they want just A’s.
  9. Ask if anyone has any questions that I could answer.
