What is this Pune Safe City Project and how did you and
your team go about its implementation?
Pune City Surveillance (PCS) Project delivered by us is a com-
prehensive Safe City solution that covers the entire city area of
640 + Sq. Km which includes Pune Municipal Corporation and
Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation through 24x7 moni-
toring that provides situational awareness and actionable intelli-
gence for effective policing. The 24x7 real-time observation of
the city has been achieved through setting up a Command and
Control Centre at the police commissioner’s office with viewing
centres at 30 police stations across the city. This has enabled the
police force to pro-actively prevent crime through timely detec-
tion, improve law and order in the city, analyse traffic violations
and investigate incidents.
The PCS project inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Maha-
rashtra Mr Devendra Fadnavis and has received several awards
for excellence and reliable performance.
Some important highlights of the project are:
• Round the clock Monitoring at the Pune Commissionerate,
police stations as well as in control rooms in both PMC and
PCMC corporations
• The police force has been specially trained to use the latest
technology for policing, migrating from the manual system
used earlier. Since the alerts are raised in real time in the sys-
tem corresponding ability of the police to respond quickly to
such alerts has been carefully analysed and procedures adopted
to meet this requirement
• Detecting, alerting and recording traffic violations such as
wrong lane driving, ‘no entry’ violations through smart video
analytics.
• Centralized control technology with GIS and GPS capabilities
for location tracking and fast response generation during cri-
sis.
• Seamless tracking of VIP/ religious procession movements,
city events and critical/heritage monuments.
• Five years of technology monitoring, people support to ensure
continued operations.

I
t was during our COEP (College of Engineering, Pune) alum-
ni meet that I caught up with Swati Sankhye, CIO, Maharash-
tra Institute of Technology, Pune. She mentioned how MIT
has grown and is now looking to expand globally and look at
more industry interaction. She then invited me to the MIT cam-
pus saying it’s currently run by two dynamic youngsters – Dr.
Mangesh Karad and Rahul Karad. She was able to fix up a meet-
ing with Dr. Mangesh Karad, Executive President, MIT-ADT
University, Pune.
Entering into the campus you tend to get floored by its
grandeur. “But that’s how Dr. Vishwanath Karad sir has always
planned his campuses. They should look majestic and the stu-
dents should take pride in showing the campus to their parents,
relatives and friends,” said Swati Sankhye.
Meeting Dr. Mangesh Karad turned out to be a pleasure. Soft
spoken, down to earth, I could sense the respect that he has for his
uncle and founder of MIT Dr. Vishwanath Karad. Dr. Mangesh
Karad after joining MIT took keen interest to expand the horizons
of MIT and went on to set tie-ups with several overseas institutes.
With a view to expand on new avenues and bring focused edu-
cation Dr. Mangesh Karad set-up the MIT University of Art,
Design and Technology which now ranks as the 5th Private State
University of Maharashtra.
It’s at this venue that I interacted with Dr. Mangesh Karad. Just
behind his desk is the photo of his uncle and mentor Dr. Vish-
wanath Karad. “The whole idea of bringing private engineering
colleges goes to Dr. Vishwanath Karad who was a professor at
COEP. In 1980 he started seeing the acute shortage of technical
education in Maharashtra. Capable students scoring 90+ percent-
age had to opt
for BSc as
there was no
policy for pri-
vate engineer-
ing colleges. A
few opted to
go to other
states like Kar-
nataka where
private engi-
neering colleges were plenty.
He wrote an article on the
need of more engineering col-
leges in a leading newspaper
and it was revolutionary as
this was debated in the
assembly house.”
It was in May 1983, Sud-
hakar Naik, then Minister of Technical Education of Maharashtra
had come to Pune for some function. He visited Dr. Karads home
and said the then CM, Vasantdada Patil too was convinced of his
idea of private engineering colleges. This led to the formation of
nine first private Engineering colleges of Maharashtra.
“Initially eight colleges were put on list as there was a criteria
of Rs. 30 lakh deposit and 20 acre land. Dr. Vishwanath Karad
also expressed his desire for starting a college to the CM, who
said that would be great. But being just a professor money and
land were a problem. But thanks to some close friends and well
wishers this hurdle was overcome thus giving birth to MIT – the
first urban engineering college in Maharashtra and city of Pune,”
said Dr. Mangesh Karad.
Apart from the regular branches MIT also launched new engi-
neering branches like petroleum, polymer etc. giving fresh talent
and opportunity to pursue non-conventional branches but those
having great potential. Infact almost all students of the initial
batches got opportunities to go abroad.
It was in 1990 that they expanded into medicine by launching
the first medical college in latur which is today attached to a 750
bedded hospital. In 1993 one more was opened in Talegaon.
“In 1996 I joined and then I and my team worked out a strate-
gy to have one more satellite engineering college in Pune at Alan-

its best as I fully relished the lunch and the casual conversation
that we had.
Post lunch I went on a tour of the campus of MIT Art, Design
& Technology University. Located in Loni Pune this center of
excellence is spread over more than 125 acres with a lush green
lawn. This was where I was informed that the legendary film
maker and actor of Indian Cinema, Late Raj Kapoor owned a
large piece of land on the bank of the river Mula-Mutha and his
wish that this land be used for academic and educational purpos-
es after his passing away. Accordingly, in 2003, MIT obtained
this land from the inheritors of Raj Kapoor and the Rajbaug Edu-
cational Complex of MIT was started.
The University offers a large number of programs both at the
Under-graduate and Post-graduate levels. “Our aim is to provide
hands-on learning experience through both theory and practical.
My team (staff) keeps continuously updating the courses as well
as our labs. We have a huge library, a well set playground and
many more activities,” said Dr. Mangesh Karad.
The main courses conducted at MIT Art, Design & Technology
University include MIT School of Fine Art & Applied Art that
offers B.F.A. & MFA Degree in Applied Art. MIT School of Bio-
engineering Sciences and Research, established just a year back
aims to harness together the knowledge of medical
science and engineering to promote welfare of the
society by creating enabling technologies and peo-
ple with skills for improvement of human health
and health care.
MIT Vishwashanti Sangeet Kala Academy
(VSKA) aims to promote Indian Classical Music
and Dance. They have courses on various styles
and forms of Indian Classical Music and Dance,
including Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kathak and pure
Hindustani Classical Music. It also includes cours-
es on different types of instruments like, Sitar,
Sarod, Tabla, Santoor, Flute, Harmonium etc.
“As you must have noticed we are on the banks of the river
Mula-Mutha making it an ideal location for VSKA. Even our
design is unique. As a tribute to the Seven Musical Notes, VSKA
consists of seven domed musical halls arranged in a circular pat-
tern. Each domed chamber represents a musical note,” said Dr.
Mangesh Karad.
MIT School of Film & Television provides degree and diploma
courses in Film and Television with considerable industry expo-
sure, and hands-on training with evolving technology. Students
can specialize to be either a Film Director, Cinematographer, Edi-
tor, Sound Designer, or a Screen Play Writer.
MIT International School of Broadcasting and Journalism
which is focused on becoming a center of excellence in media
education and training. MIT School of Vedic Sciences aims to
equip youth with the wisdom and skills embodied in the Indic
Scientific Tradition. Maharashtra Academy of Naval Education
& Training aims to impart world class Maritime Training. During
my visit I could notice many budding marine cadets dressed in
the typical white Navy dress.
The other courses are - MIT Institute of Design, MIT School of
Architecture, MIT College of Food Technology, MIT College of
Management, MIT School of Education & Research.

FA has expanded and this year hundreds of exhibitors includ-
ing some of the biggest names in the industry launched/show-
cased their latest products/technologies to visitors from across
the globe. IFA, held annually at Messe Berlin attracted more than
253,000 visitors making it one of the world’s most important
tradeshow for consumer electronics and home appliances. Over
1,800 exhibitors showcased their latest products and services
spread over 159,000 square meters with an expected order vol-
ume of 4.7 billion euro achieved during the six days of the event.
Once again, IFA 2017 demonstrated that it is a key driving
force for both brands and retailers. In the run-up to the industry’s
most important sales season, the high order volumes seen in
Berlin point to a strong and positive end-of-year business. IFA
was also the showcase for numerous innovations and product
launches, which demonstrates that “IFA is and remains the ideal
meeting place and market place for trade and industry," said
Hans-Joachim Kamp, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the
IFA organizer, gfu Consumer & Home Electronics GmbH.
“IFA has strengthened its role as the world's most important
trade show in this anniversary year, with the tenth edition of
Home Appliances@IFA. It just shows the extraordinary contribu-
tion of the event to the expected positive development in the
global market for domestic appliances," said Dr. Reinhard
Zinkann, Chairman of the
ZVEI Association for Elec-
tric Appliances and CECED
President.
"By bringing together the
world´s great innovators,
brands, technologies, prod-
ucts, entrepreneurs and
media all in one place, IFA
is the most efficient plat-
form to tell your story
worldwide – whether you
are a start-up or a long-
established brand," said Dr.
Christian Göke, CEO of
Messe Berlin. “We are
extremely happy with the enthusiasm and energy shown by all
our exhibitors."
Huge Success for IFA Global Markets
This year also saw a huge success for IFA Global Markets,
which brings together OEMs and ODMs at one location in the
heart of Berlin, in what is now Europe’s largest sourcing and sup-
ply chain event for the consumer electronics and home appliances
industry.
The CEO of Messe Berlin, Dr. Christian Göke, described the
event as “absolutely impressive”. "This year, IFA Global Markets
truly made a quantum leap, both in terms of size and quality," he
said.
"Our exhibitors are thrilled," said Zhang Jing, director of the
Chinese Chamber of Commerce, who supports 150 IFA Global
Markets exhibitors. "Just an hour after the opening, my exhibitors
already had some of the biggest and most important customers at
their booths," she said.
Changwoo Yoon, senior researcher at the Korean Electronics
and Telecommunications Research Institute praised the high
quality of the event: "Last year, we gained a large company from
China as an important customer. IFA Global Markets is an oppor-
tunity for us to meet global companies all in one space."
With IFA Global Markets,
the growing B2B segment
of OEM / ODM manufac-
turers has an exclusive new
home at STATION Berlin.
Compared to last year, the
size of IFA Global Markets
doubled, and still the event
was fully booked.
IFA NEXT
However, the biggest suc-
cess was arguably delivered
by a new concept - IFA
NEXT, which exceeded all
expectations. From the very

first day, IFA's new innovation hub was hugely popular with all
visitors, bringing together a full range of 130 start-ups, 70 com-
panies, as well as industry alliances, organizations and research
facilities.
IFA NEXT benefited from the fact that it was based right next
to the venue for all IFA Keynotes, the IFA + Summit congress as
well as IFA guest conferences. The layout of the new venue gave
the event an extra boost, making IFA NEXT an attractive location
for both exhibitors and visitors. The open layout of the hall, with
clear paths leading to the stage at its center, together with the
modern, modular design of the stands, all contributed to the over-
all impression that this was a marketplace for ideas and the per-
fect meeting point for a lively community of innovators. Many
international encounters, together with visits by ambassadors
from Japan and Korea, and leading politicians and business lead-
ers provided plenty of buzz for all at IFA NEXT. The great feed-
back from journalists also underlined that IFA NEXT is a fantas-
tic platform for innovators of all sizes.
Journalists from more than 70 countries came to Berlin to
report on the flood of new and innovative products and technolo-
gy trends shown this year at IFA. Jens Heithecker, IFA Executive
Director, said: "IFA is the global powerhouse for innovation, and
the volume of media coverage around the world just serves to
underline IFA’s global importance. In 2017, we welcomed 6,000
journalists here in Berlin, and nearly 2,800 came from more than
70 countries."
IFA 2018 will take place from 31 August to 5 September.

Global Technologies Nov - Dec 201726
Indiasoft has become a
brand in itself and has
over the years grown sub-
stantially. What was the
idea behind its creation
and have you achieved the
goals set at that time?
We are delighted that
Indiasoft has grown in
stature and is now getting a wider recognition globally. Over the
last 17 years since its inception, we have covered a lot of ground.
Created basically to give a platform to the small and medium
companies to sell their products and solutions to overseas buyers
in a cost effective manner, Indiasoft has now became a forum for
launching innovative products and concepts. We have provided a
platform for launching over 500 + products over the last few
years. The good news is that these products have been well
received by the IT fraternity. Gradually, Indiasoft has become a
forum for presenting innovations and state-of –the- art products
and solutions. That way, we are grateful to our exhibitors, foreign
counterparts and technology seekers from India and abroad for
the image makeover of Indiasoft. Of course, this should have not
been possible without the support from Government of India
especially ministries of commerce and electronics and IT who
have been with us right from the beginning.
Yes, we do not want to be complacent with our achievement.
As you know, IT is the most dynamic industry and the business
models keep on changing with the incremental innovation of the
technology. Our focus is to move in the value chain in a sustained
manner to give a clear leadership to the Indian IT industry and to
motivate and create an ecosystem for them to move ahead.
What are your plans for the 2018 show? Any particular
additional activity?
Let me put this way - the year 2018 is a watershed for our IT
show. I used the term IT show with a purpose. Our next show,
which is being held in Bengalauru from January 24-25, 2018 will
be qualitatively different from the past ones. Here, two shows -
Indiasoft and Hardware Show, the former entering the 18th edi-
tion and the latter third edition – are going to converge.
Let me explain the rationale behind it. The world IT landscape
is changing fast with tectonic shifts taking place in technology.
Artificial intelligence, automation, robotics, Internet of Things
(IOTs), drones, sensors, biomarkers etc are effecting radical
changes. India no longer can compete in the international market
with our conventional knowledge since the automation can take
care of many of the functions and solutions that used to be done
with human interference. This is also catching up in India in an
unprecedented manner. Take for instance, our banks and software
developing centers. Their intake of people has drastically
reduced. We have to seek new niches to stay in lead.
The future is for more technology and knowledge driven activ-
ities. It is estimated that the future demand for IT works in the US
is for maintenance of their automation systems, which are run-
ning on artificial intelligence, IOTs that is machine to machine
communications, cloud computing etc. Our considered view is
that we also will have to innovate internet products. I reckon that
our contribution to this segment is minuscule. That is why ESC is
embarking on creation of incubation centers by the industry to
come out with innovative products that are relevant to the present
context. To set an example, we are in the process of setting up an
incubation center at our state-of – the - art office in Okhla, New
Delhi, which when operational will help the IT industry to avail
the facilities in a cost effective manner. It will also showcase the
industry be it large, medium, small, startups and micro as to how
to make R&D an integral part of their business functioning.
Therefore, this year’s ‘combined show will lay importance to all
these aspects including embedded technologies, where India still
will have to make a mark.
That does not mean that we are totally abdicating the earlier
Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC) has been playing a
pivotal role in the growth of the Indian ICT industry by conducting its annual event Indi-
asoft for last 17 years and a Hardware focused show for the last couple of years. For the
first time next year both shows are going to converge and its expected to be the largest
Indiasoft. With this in the backdrop we thought it the right time to converse with
D K Sareen, Executive Director, ESC. Excerpts

space. We reckon that many countries in their earlier stages of
digitization may require conventional products and solutions. We
will provide those countries from Africa, Latin America, CIS,
SAARC, Middle East etc. the same bouquet of products and solu-
tions.
What category of companies should not miss this opportu-
nity?
Let me put it in this way: no company in the IT space should
miss this event be they startups, micro, small, medium or large.
Everyone will have their own takeaways in terms of showcasing
the products, handholding, seeking business partners etc. Let me
assure you that it will be a new experience. About the foreign par-
ticipation, we expect around 300 foreign buyers from the soft-
ware side and close to 100 from the hardware side. The number
of Indian exhibitors will be close to 250 from the software side
and 100 from the hardware side. Also, there will be participation
from least developed, developing, emerging and developed mar-
kets.
For exhibitors and sponsors what type of packages are you
offering?
With some confidence, I can tell that the package that we are
offering at the IT show is unique. Our show is not held as a prof-
it making event unlike other shows world over. Our basic objec-
tive is to give the most cost effective package to the exhibitors so
that they can do the business without undertaking costly trips
abroad. At the same time, foreign delegates can scout for their
products, solutions and partners in one place rather than making
trips across the country.
Who were the major speakers and guest of honors for the
earlier events?
We are finalizing our schedule and trying to bring on board the
best industry speakers from the world. We are also trying to reach
out the government representatives from all continents to address
the event and to share their wish list of products and solutions that
they need from India.
How do you plan to attract International buyers and par-
ticipants?
We have a comprehensive data bank of foreign buyers and we
have started mailing to them. Also, we are in regular contact with
our embassies and high commissions abroad to seek their help in
promoting the event.
What are the selection criteria and how do you ensure the
same person doesn't attend the event for 3 consecutive years?
If you are talking about repeat delegates in the general catego-
ry, which we have, many, that is a very positive outcome. This
year also, we expect a heavy turnout since the two events are
coinciding. About the hosted buyers, for whom we partly under-
write their expenses, we have a carful filtering process, which has
certain set criteria to ensure that there is no free lunch.
Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC) the
apex body for promoting Indian IT and electronics industry globally has
proved to be of great benefit to its 2300 plus members thanks to its inno-
vative schemes which help SME in saving substantially at global events.
While NASSCOM may have attracted the big names, Electronics and Com-
puter Software Export Promotion Council (ESC), sponsored by the Govern-
ment of India has turned out to be a great beneficiary to the Indian Small
and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and is considered to be India’s best Elec-
tronics and IT trade facilitation organization. With 2300+ member
exporters pan India ESC is also the largest ICT association in the country
and shows the confidence of the ICT fraternity in ESC. Out of the total
membership of ESC, about 70 per cent are SMEs. As a link between the Government and member exporter, ESC
provides a platform for interaction on policy issues for the SMEs.
Ever since its inception in 1989 with an export performance of US$ 200 million, ESC has successfully steered the
direction of India’s Electronics and Software Exports that currently have reached to over 150 countries across the
world establishing the hallmark of India’s quality and competitiveness.
In an Industry where the degree of technological obsolescence is very high, ESC is striving hard to elevate India’s
position in the international trading arena of the Electronic and Computer Software. The entire gamut of Electron-
ics and Software Industry are its members including companies in Consumer Electronics, Electronic Components,
Instrumentation, Telecom, Computer Hardware and Peripherals and Computer Software and IT Enabled Services.
You have been participating in GITEX for past several
years. How has the event changed over the years?
It’s our 14th year and over the years we have seen it consistent-
ly growing with quality and relevance. Participating at GITEX
has been quite beneficial and we have been increasing our booth
size in consonance with our growth in the MEA market. We use
this platform to show case our new product launches and meet up
new customers. As we have a very strong presence across the
MEA region with our own offices in Dubai, KSA, Ghana, South
Africa etc. This being one of the largest expositions also helps us
to meet up our existing and potential partners and customers at
one place.
How beneficial was the event this year?
This year the event opened up new opportunities for us in terms
of prospective partners across MEA market for our expansion
plans. At GITEX we launched our new technology for cloud
security at GITEX this year, which was well received by our part-
ners and customers. This is a ready to use solution with zero
deployment time across the globe. It includes easy Cloud based
deployment of licenses & clients on endpoints. With its advanced
futuristic technologies, eScan’s Cloud Security Solution is spe-
cially designed to provide real-time protection to computers from
objectionable content and security threats such as Viruses, Spy-
ware, Adware, Keyloggers, Rootkits, Botnets, Hackers, Spam etc.
Can you throw light on your company and its network?
eScan being a pure play security solution provider has an array
of solutions to protect the networks and endpoints of very large to
small businesses apart from SOHO users. With our strong R&D
capabilities, we have incorporated technologies like MicroWorld
Winsock Layer (MWL), Proactive Behavioral Analysis Engine
(PBAE), Host Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS), Domain & IP
Reputation Check and Non-Intrusive Learning Pattern (NILP)
Technology to provide real-time protection against Ransomware,
DDoS, APT and other cyber-attacks. We have our channel part-
ners spread across countries who help us in reaching out to end
customers in an effective manner.
In our endeavor to remain at the crest of growth and growing
security challenges coming from multiple vector attacks, we have
strengthen our technologies by relentless efforts from our R&D
team. Which puts as at par with our global peers and is acknowl-
edged by many of our enterprise partners and customers.
With net and mobile frequently attacked how does your
development team, especially your tech savvy CEO keep
abreast on the virus issues?
Today we have millions of users across the world and a strong
partner network, which helps us to keep track of the evolving
threats well in advance. This also helps us to mitigate the ZERO
DAY attacks, which are either variants of previous known mali-
cious attacks or new ones.
However, with the evolved AI & Machine learning technology
adopted by our products, we are able to protect our users from
any unknown threats in real time. Having said that, our R&D
team works relentlessly to develop and design new products,
keeping in mind the changing technological landscape such as
SMAC & IoT etc.
What are the major issues in this industry?
With the growing threat landscape in IT and adoption of IT in
every business facilitation, cyber security becomes of a corner
stone of IT deployment or infrastructure. Cyber security is now
becoming an integral part of all IT backbones and an essential.
One of the key trends observed in the recent past is that of Ran-
somware attacks, that is creating havoc across India as well as
globally. DDoS and APTs (Advanced Persistent Threat) are other
threats. The cyber threat extends its fangs to more areas with the
increased adoption of technology. Cyber criminals today are more
sophisticated keeping up with the changes. Their major target is
designed to elicit financial or confidential data gain from network

Global Technologies Nov - Dec 201728
An Indian anti-virus company is creating waves globally
with its powerful product e-scan. As always the compa-
ny had again a powerful presence at GITEX 2017 – the
largest stall from India. During the event I caught up
with my dear old friend from 17 years and who has
played a vital role in the company’s global expansion -
Sunil Kripalani, Senior Vice President, Global
Sales and Marketing, eScan who gives an insight
into the company’s growth and success.
Excerpts.
“Our R&D team works relentlessly to develop
and design new products”
A
s with every October electronics professionals from
across the globe converged to see, experience and tie-up
with innovative and potential companies displaying their
wares at the HKTDC Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn Edi-
tion) and electronicAsia fairs spread over 3 days (it had to close
a day earlier due to the tropical cyclone and the fair period was
cut from 4 days to 3 days).
Now in its 37th Hong Kong Electronics Fair and 21st electron-
icAsia attracted around 86,000 buyers from 139 countries and
regions in three days. Over 60,000 buyers visited the Autumn
Electronics Fair while around 26,000 visitors attended electroni-
cAsia. The Autumn Electronics Fair was organised by the Hong
Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), while electronicA-
sia was jointly organised by the HKTDC and MMI Asia Pte Ltd.
The two co-located trade fairs featured some 4,300 exhibitors
from 25 countries and regions.
HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau said: “The
fair period was cut short to three days due to weather conditions
and some buyers’ travel plans might have been affected. In spite
of this, we have taken various measures to attract more buyers to
visit the fairs on the last day, and facilitate the business connec-
tions between exhibitors and buyers. Through the on-site survey,
we found that the electronics industry is positive towards the sec-
tor’s outlook. Buyers are grasping the last chance to source prod-
ucts on the final day.”
During the fair period, the HKTDC commissioned an inde-
pendent survey, interviewing a total of 1,025 exhibitors and buy-
ers about the outlook for the electronics market and new product
trends. More than half (54%) of the respondents expect the over-
all sales of their companies will increase next year, up 6 percent-
age points from the survey in 2016. For major markets, respon-
dents are most optimistic about ASEAN (92%), followed by the
Chinese Mainland (91%), Latin America (85%) and Taiwan
(85%).
With the Internet of Things (IoT) becoming more popular, the
survey reveals that 84 per cent of respondents think audio visual
items will be the product category most benefitted from the smart
home trend, followed by wireless charging devices (81%) and
systems items for connection with the Internet/mobile network
(77%). The industry also believes that consumers are willing to
pay a premium of 18% for products with smart home capabilities
compared to traditional products. 81 per cent of respondents are
optimistic about the virtual reality and augmented reality devices
market in the next two years. For related products, they are most
optimistic about audio visual items for entertainment purpose
(56%), followed by mobile/on-line games (55%).
Start-ups receiving orders
The Startup zone at the Autumn Electronics Fair this year
attracted close to 100 start-ups from seven countries and regions,
doubling last year’s number. The Zone provides a one-stop pro-
motional platform for start-ups to meet with potential suppliers,
buyers and investors. The start-up supporting institution Gadget
Excelerator Lab (Gelab) led 12 start-ups to the Autumn Electron-
ics Fair this year.
Francois Lee, CEO of Gelab, said that the HKTDC had proac-
tively promoted the Startup zone through different media plat-
forms. “We are happy to see that many buyers from Southeast
Asia and the Middle East have made enquiries, and some of them
consider placing small orders to test local markets.”

This year’s HKTDCs twin electronics shows showcased a wide variety of electronic products right from 3D printing to
virtual reality, robots to drones, eHealth products to home appliances and many start-up inventions. Chandragupta
Amritkar reports from Hong Kong after attending one of the world's leading electronics show.

Strong demand for smart products in emerging markets
The fair featured a wide range of state-of-the-art electronics
products to suit buyers’ needs. Besides the Startup zone, the Tech
Hall also featured the Virtual Reality (VR), Robotics &
Unmanned Tech, Smart Tech and 3D Printing zones to showcase
popular high-tech products. Jafar Sherif, a buyer from the United
Arab Emirates, said as a lot of residential and commercial proj-
ects are under construction due to the Expo 2020 in Dubai, IoT
and smart products will enjoy strong demand. This is his first visit
to the Autumn Electronics Fair. He had found 30-40 potential
suppliers of IoT solutions, AV systems and smart devices from
Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.
electronicAsia 2017
The 21st electronicAsia that attracted around 26,000 buyers
introduced a new zone for Power Supplies, covering battery stor-
age cells, power supply accessories, inspection & control sys-
tems. Speaking during the fair, Jenny He, Marketing Executive
Manager, Battery and Material Division, Hunan Corun New
Energy Co Ltd from the Chinese mainland, said, “We are promot-
ing our long-life power type batteries for household and industri-
al applications as well as electrical vehicle battery power packs.
A number of buyers from India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Russia,
Singapore and Ukraine have expressed interest and we expect to
conclude business with more than 20 new customers.”
The exhibition also covered other elements - printed circuit
boards and EMS, display technology, sensor technology, key-
boards & switches, and parts & components. Three Asia’s power-
house electronics providers organised pavilions: the Japan Pavil-
ion featuring exhibitors from Saitama City, the Taiwan Pavilion
featuring 38 companies, organised by the Taiwan Electrical and
Electronic Manufacturers’ Association (TEEMA), and the Hong
Kong Metals Manufacturers Association Pavilion.
“electronicAsia can really help us expand our presence world-
wide and that’s why many Taiwanese companies are keen to join
the excitement here every year. We have seen more overseas buy-
ers coming from USA and Europe this year, allowing our enter-
prises to capture new business development opportunities. Buy-
ers expressed strong interest in our products including switches,
resistors, capacitors and inductors,” said Louis Yang, Project
Manager, Mainland Affairs Department, TEEMA.
As an important electronics marketplace, electronicAsia pro-
vides enormous opportunities to the industry. The fair adds more
value with networking events such as the Joint Networking
Reception with the Autumn Electronics Fair, and activities such
as the Product Demo & Launch Pad and the Buyers’ Forum for
visitors to explore various markets in depth.
The Hong Kong Electronic Forum, co-organised by Hong
Kong Vocational Training Council and Hong Kong Electronic
Industries Association, presented six top experts in a discussion
on flexible technology. One of them was Prof Zheng Cui, Direc-
tor of Printable Electronics Research Center, China Academy of
Science from the Chinese mainland, who said that flexible elec-
tronics was transforming the way we make and use electronic
devices. “The way forward is to embrace flexible electronics to
provide value-added products with new functionality at lower
cost to stay competitive in the market. Flexible electronics tech-
nology will inspire innovation.”

  • 10. I t was during our COEP (College of Engineering, Pune) alum- ni meet that I caught up with Swati Sankhye, CIO, Maharash- tra Institute of Technology, Pune. She mentioned how MIT has grown and is now looking to expand globally and look at more industry interaction. She then invited me to the MIT cam- pus saying it’s currently run by two dynamic youngsters – Dr. Mangesh Karad and Rahul Karad. She was able to fix up a meet- ing with Dr. Mangesh Karad, Executive President, MIT-ADT University, Pune. Entering into the campus you tend to get floored by its grandeur. “But that’s how Dr. Vishwanath Karad sir has always planned his campuses. They should look majestic and the stu- dents should take pride in showing the campus to their parents, relatives and friends,” said Swati Sankhye. Meeting Dr. Mangesh Karad turned out to be a pleasure. Soft spoken, down to earth, I could sense the respect that he has for his uncle and founder of MIT Dr. Vishwanath Karad. Dr. Mangesh Karad after joining MIT took keen interest to expand the horizons of MIT and went on to set tie-ups with several overseas institutes. With a view to expand on new avenues and bring focused edu- cation Dr. Mangesh Karad set-up the MIT University of Art, Design and Technology which now ranks as the 5th Private State University of Maharashtra. It’s at this venue that I interacted with Dr. Mangesh Karad. Just behind his desk is the photo of his uncle and mentor Dr. Vish- wanath Karad. “The whole idea of bringing private engineering colleges goes to Dr. Vishwanath Karad who was a professor at COEP. In 1980 he started seeing the acute shortage of technical education in Maharashtra. Capable students scoring 90+ percent- age had to opt for BSc as there was no policy for pri- vate engineer- ing colleges. A few opted to go to other states like Kar- nataka where private engi- neering colleges were plenty. He wrote an article on the need of more engineering col- leges in a leading newspaper and it was revolutionary as this was debated in the assembly house.” It was in May 1983, Sud- hakar Naik, then Minister of Technical Education of Maharashtra had come to Pune for some function. He visited Dr. Karads home and said the then CM, Vasantdada Patil too was convinced of his idea of private engineering colleges. This led to the formation of nine first private Engineering colleges of Maharashtra. “Initially eight colleges were put on list as there was a criteria of Rs. 30 lakh deposit and 20 acre land. Dr. Vishwanath Karad also expressed his desire for starting a college to the CM, who said that would be great. But being just a professor money and land were a problem. But thanks to some close friends and well wishers this hurdle was overcome thus giving birth to MIT – the first urban engineering college in Maharashtra and city of Pune,” said Dr. Mangesh Karad. Apart from the regular branches MIT also launched new engi- neering branches like petroleum, polymer etc. giving fresh talent and opportunity to pursue non-conventional branches but those having great potential. Infact almost all students of the initial batches got opportunities to go abroad. It was in 1990 that they expanded into medicine by launching the first medical college in latur which is today attached to a 750 bedded hospital. In 1993 one more was opened in Talegaon. “In 1996 I joined and then I and my team worked out a strate- gy to have one more satellite engineering college in Pune at Alan- di, an MIT women’s engineering college, followed by pharmacy, BBA and MBA colleges. In 2001 we went in for maritime and 2006 design colleges. Our efforts paid off when in 2014 we became a private university,” said Dr. Mangesh Karad. Today MIT group of Institutions has 65+ colleges and schools with more than 50,000 students enrolled with nice residential complexes for outstation students. After spending 2 hours and getting a good insight, Dr. Mangesh Karad invited us to have lunch at his abode. It was hospitality at E d u c a t i o n Global Technologies Nov - Dec 201716 MIT Art, Design & Technology University: A tech savvy University Dr. Mangesh Karad its best as I fully relished the lunch and the casual conversation that we had. Post lunch I went on a tour of the campus of MIT Art, Design & Technology University. Located in Loni Pune this center of excellence is spread over more than 125 acres with a lush green lawn. This was where I was informed that the legendary film maker and actor of Indian Cinema, Late Raj Kapoor owned a large piece of land on the bank of the river Mula-Mutha and his wish that this land be used for academic and educational purpos- es after his passing away. Accordingly, in 2003, MIT obtained this land from the inheritors of Raj Kapoor and the Rajbaug Edu- cational Complex of MIT was started. The University offers a large number of programs both at the Under-graduate and Post-graduate levels. “Our aim is to provide hands-on learning experience through both theory and practical. My team (staff) keeps continuously updating the courses as well as our labs. We have a huge library, a well set playground and many more activities,” said Dr. Mangesh Karad. The main courses conducted at MIT Art, Design & Technology University include MIT School of Fine Art & Applied Art that offers B.F.A. & MFA Degree in Applied Art. MIT School of Bio- engineering Sciences and Research, established just a year back aims to harness together the knowledge of medical science and engineering to promote welfare of the society by creating enabling technologies and peo- ple with skills for improvement of human health and health care. MIT Vishwashanti Sangeet Kala Academy (VSKA) aims to promote Indian Classical Music and Dance. They have courses on various styles and forms of Indian Classical Music and Dance, including Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kathak and pure Hindustani Classical Music. It also includes cours- es on different types of instruments like, Sitar, Sarod, Tabla, Santoor, Flute, Harmonium etc. “As you must have noticed we are on the banks of the river Mula-Mutha making it an ideal location for VSKA. Even our design is unique. As a tribute to the Seven Musical Notes, VSKA consists of seven domed musical halls arranged in a circular pat- tern. Each domed chamber represents a musical note,” said Dr. Mangesh Karad. MIT School of Film & Television provides degree and diploma courses in Film and Television with considerable industry expo- sure, and hands-on training with evolving technology. Students can specialize to be either a Film Director, Cinematographer, Edi- tor, Sound Designer, or a Screen Play Writer. MIT International School of Broadcasting and Journalism which is focused on becoming a center of excellence in media education and training. MIT School of Vedic Sciences aims to equip youth with the wisdom and skills embodied in the Indic Scientific Tradition. Maharashtra Academy of Naval Education & Training aims to impart world class Maritime Training. During my visit I could notice many budding marine cadets dressed in the typical white Navy dress. The other courses are - MIT Institute of Design, MIT School of Architecture, MIT College of Food Technology, MIT College of Management, MIT School of Education & Research. E d u c a t i o n Global TechnologiesNov - Dec 2017 17 MIT Institute of Design One of the best courses run by the university is MIT Institute of Design which has in a decade become a leading design institute in India. Vinayak Kulka- rni, Associate Dean, MIT Institute of Design took me on a quick tour. It was quite impressive as I was able to see quite a few interesting and innovative designs, including a beautiful car. IFA NEXT benefited from the fact that it was based right next to the venue for all IFA Keynotes, the IFA + Summit congress as well as IFA guest conferences. The layout of the new venue gave the event an extra boost, making IFA NEXT an attractive location for both exhibitors and visitors. The open layout of the hall, with clear paths leading to the stage at its center, together with the modern, modular design of the stands, all contributed to the over- all impression that this was a marketplace for ideas and the per- fect meeting point for a lively community of innovators. Many international encounters, together with visits by ambassadors from Japan and Korea, and leading politicians and business lead- ers provided plenty of buzz for all at IFA NEXT. The great feed- back from journalists also underlined that IFA NEXT is a fantas- tic platform for innovators of all sizes. Journalists from more than 70 countries came to Berlin to report on the flood of new and innovative products and technolo- gy trends shown this year at IFA. • 15. C u r t a i n R a i s e r Global Technologies Nov - Dec 201726 Indiasoft has become a brand in itself and has over the years grown sub- stantially. What was the idea behind its creation and have you achieved the goals set at that time? We are delighted that Indiasoft has grown in stature and is now getting a wider recognition globally. Over the last 17 years since its inception, we have covered a lot of ground. Created basically to give a platform to the small and medium companies to sell their products and solutions to overseas buyers in a cost effective manner, Indiasoft has now became a forum for launching innovative products and concepts. We have provided a platform for launching over 500 + products over the last few years. The good news is that these products have been well received by the IT fraternity. Gradually, Indiasoft has become a forum for presenting innovations and state-of –the- art products and solutions. That way, we are grateful to our exhibitors, foreign counterparts and technology seekers from India and abroad for the image makeover of Indiasoft. Of course, this should have not been possible without the support from Government of India especially ministries of commerce and electronics and IT who have been with us right from the beginning. Yes, we do not want to be complacent with our achievement. As you know, IT is the most dynamic industry and the business models keep on changing with the incremental innovation of the technology. Our focus is to move in the value chain in a sustained manner to give a clear leadership to the Indian IT industry and to motivate and create an ecosystem for them to move ahead. What are your plans for the 2018 show? Any particular additional activity? Let me put this way - the year 2018 is a watershed for our IT show. I used the term IT show with a purpose. Our next show, which is being held in Bengalauru from January 24-25, 2018 will be qualitatively different from the past ones. Here, two shows - Indiasoft and Hardware Show, the former entering the 18th edi- tion and the latter third edition – are going to converge. Let me explain the rationale behind it. The world IT landscape is changing fast with tectonic shifts taking place in technology. Artificial intelligence, automation, robotics, Internet of Things (IOTs), drones, sensors, biomarkers etc are effecting radical changes. India no longer can compete in the international market with our conventional knowledge since the automation can take care of many of the functions and solutions that used to be done with human interference. This is also catching up in India in an unprecedented manner. Take for instance, our banks and software developing centers. Their intake of people has drastically reduced. We have to seek new niches to stay in lead. The future is for more technology and knowledge driven activ- ities. It is estimated that the future demand for IT works in the US is for maintenance of their automation systems, which are run- ning on artificial intelligence, IOTs that is machine to machine communications, cloud computing etc. Our considered view is that we also will have to innovate internet products. I reckon that our contribution to this segment is minuscule. That is why ESC is embarking on creation of incubation centers by the industry to come out with innovative products that are relevant to the present context. To set an example, we are in the process of setting up an incubation center at our state-of – the - art office in Okhla, New Delhi, which when operational will help the IT industry to avail the facilities in a cost effective manner. It will also showcase the industry be it large, medium, small, startups and micro as to how to make R&D an integral part of their business functioning. Therefore, this year’s ‘combined show will lay importance to all these aspects including embedded technologies, where India still will have to make a mark. That does not mean that we are totally abdicating the earlier Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC) has been playing a pivotal role in the growth of the Indian ICT industry by conducting its annual event Indi- asoft for last 17 years and a Hardware focused show for the last couple of years. For the first time next year both shows are going to converge and its expected to be the largest Indiasoft. With this in the backdrop we thought it the right time to converse with D K Sareen, Executive Director, ESC. Excerpts "Indiasoft has become a forum for presenting innovations and state- of –the- art products and solutions" C u r t a i n R a i s e r Global TechnologiesNov - Dec 2017 27 space. We reckon that many countries in their earlier stages of digitization may require conventional products and solutions. We will provide those countries from Africa, Latin America, CIS, SAARC, Middle East etc. the same bouquet of products and solu- tions. What category of companies should not miss this opportu- nity? Let me put it in this way: no company in the IT space should miss this event be they startups, micro, small, medium or large. Everyone will have their own takeaways in terms of showcasing the products, handholding, seeking business partners etc. Let me assure you that it will be a new experience. About the foreign par- ticipation, we expect around 300 foreign buyers from the soft- ware side and close to 100 from the hardware side. The number of Indian exhibitors will be close to 250 from the software side and 100 from the hardware side. Also, there will be participation from least developed, developing, emerging and developed mar- kets. For exhibitors and sponsors what type of packages are you offering? With some confidence, I can tell that the package that we are offering at the IT show is unique. Our show is not held as a prof- it making event unlike other shows world over. Our basic objec- tive is to give the most cost effective package to the exhibitors so that they can do the business without undertaking costly trips abroad. At the same time, foreign delegates can scout for their products, solutions and partners in one place rather than making trips across the country. Who were the major speakers and guest of honors for the earlier events? We are finalizing our schedule and trying to bring on board the best industry speakers from the world. We are also trying to reach out the government representatives from all continents to address the event and to share their wish list of products and solutions that they need from India. How do you plan to attract International buyers and par- ticipants? We have a comprehensive data bank of foreign buyers and we have started mailing to them. Also, we are in regular contact with our embassies and high commissions abroad to seek their help in promoting the event. What are the selection criteria and how do you ensure the same person doesn't attend the event for 3 consecutive years? If you are talking about repeat delegates in the general catego- ry, which we have, many, that is a very positive outcome. This year also, we expect a heavy turnout since the two events are coinciding. About the hosted buyers, for whom we partly under- write their expenses, we have a carful filtering process, which has certain set criteria to ensure that there is no free lunch. Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC) the apex body for promoting Indian IT and electronics industry globally has proved to be of great benefit to its 2300 plus members thanks to its inno- vative schemes which help SME in saving substantially at global events. While NASSCOM may have attracted the big names, Electronics and Com- puter Software Export Promotion Council (ESC), sponsored by the Govern- ment of India has turned out to be a great beneficiary to the Indian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and is considered to be India’s best Elec- tronics and IT trade facilitation organization. With 2300+ member exporters pan India ESC is also the largest ICT association in the country and shows the confidence of the ICT fraternity in ESC. Out of the total membership of ESC, about 70 per cent are SMEs. As a link between the Government and member exporter, ESC provides a platform for interaction on policy issues for the SMEs. Ever since its inception in 1989 with an export performance of US$ 200 million, ESC has successfully steered the direction of India’s Electronics and Software Exports that currently have reached to over 150 countries across the world establishing the hallmark of India’s quality and competitiveness. In an Industry where the degree of technological obsolescence is very high, ESC is striving hard to elevate India’s position in the international trading arena of the Electronic and Computer Software. The entire gamut of Electron- ics and Software Industry are its members including companies in Consumer Electronics, Electronic Components, Instrumentation, Telecom, Computer Hardware and Peripherals and Computer Software and IT Enabled Services.
  • 16. You have been participating in GITEX for past several years. How has the event changed over the years? It’s our 14th year and over the years we have seen it consistent- ly growing with quality and relevance. Participating at GITEX has been quite beneficial and we have been increasing our booth size in consonance with our growth in the MEA market. We use this platform to show case our new product launches and meet up new customers. As we have a very strong presence across the MEA region with our own offices in Dubai, KSA, Ghana, South Africa etc. This being one of the largest expositions also helps us to meet up our existing and potential partners and customers at one place. How beneficial was the event this year? This year the event opened up new opportunities for us in terms of prospective partners across MEA market for our expansion plans. At GITEX we launched our new technology for cloud security at GITEX this year, which was well received by our part- ners and customers. This is a ready to use solution with zero deployment time across the globe. It includes easy Cloud based deployment of licenses & clients on endpoints. With its advanced futuristic technologies, eScan’s Cloud Security Solution is spe- cially designed to provide real-time protection to computers from objectionable content and security threats such as Viruses, Spy- ware, Adware, Keyloggers, Rootkits, Botnets, Hackers, Spam etc. Can you throw light on your company and its network? eScan being a pure play security solution provider has an array of solutions to protect the networks and endpoints of very large to small businesses apart from SOHO users. With our strong R&D capabilities, we have incorporated technologies like MicroWorld Winsock Layer (MWL), Proactive Behavioral Analysis Engine (PBAE), Host Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS), Domain & IP Reputation Check and Non-Intrusive Learning Pattern (NILP) Technology to provide real-time protection against Ransomware, DDoS, APT and other cyber-attacks. We have our channel part- ners spread across countries who help us in reaching out to end customers in an effective manner. In our endeavor to remain at the crest of growth and growing security challenges coming from multiple vector attacks, we have strengthen our technologies by relentless efforts from our R&D team. Which puts as at par with our global peers and is acknowl- edged by many of our enterprise partners and customers. With net and mobile frequently attacked how does your development team, especially your tech savvy CEO keep abreast on the virus issues? Today we have millions of users across the world and a strong partner network, which helps us to keep track of the evolving threats well in advance. This also helps us to mitigate the ZERO DAY attacks, which are either variants of previous known mali- cious attacks or new ones. However, with the evolved AI & Machine learning technology adopted by our products, we are able to protect our users from any unknown threats in real time. Having said that, our R&D team works relentlessly to develop and design new products, keeping in mind the changing technological landscape such as SMAC & IoT etc. What are the major issues in this industry? With the growing threat landscape in IT and adoption of IT in every business facilitation, cyber security becomes of a corner stone of IT deployment or infrastructure. Cyber security is now becoming an integral part of all IT backbones and an essential. One of the key trends observed in the recent past is that of Ran- somware attacks, that is creating havoc across India as well as globally. DDoS and APTs (Advanced Persistent Threat) are other threats. The cyber threat extends its fangs to more areas with the increased adoption of technology. Cyber criminals today are more sophisticated keeping up with the changes. Their major target is designed to elicit financial or confidential data gain from network to individual users with planned attacks. What are your future plans? As part of our Vision 2020, to be the brand leader among secu- rity products and solutions in India, we are now consolidating our presence across the channel segments in the Middle East and Africa region. We foresee to do more and more advanced research on our products to provide futuristic security solutions for our end customers. • 17. A s with every October electronics professionals from across the globe converged to see, experience and tie-up with innovative and potential companies displaying their wares at the HKTDC Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn Edi- tion) and electronicAsia fairs spread over 3 days (it had to close a day earlier due to the tropical cyclone and the fair period was cut from 4 days to 3 days). Now in its 37th Hong Kong Electronics Fair and 21st electron- icAsia attracted around 86,000 buyers from 139 countries and regions in three days. Over 60,000 buyers visited the Autumn Electronics Fair while around 26,000 visitors attended electroni- cAsia. The Autumn Electronics Fair was organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), while electronicA- sia was jointly organised by the HKTDC and MMI Asia Pte Ltd. The two co-located trade fairs featured some 4,300 exhibitors from 25 countries and regions. HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau said: “The fair period was cut short to three days due to weather conditions and some buyers’ travel plans might have been affected. In spite of this, we have taken various measures to attract more buyers to visit the fairs on the last day, and facilitate the business connec- tions between exhibitors and buyers. Through the on-site survey, we found that the electronics industry is positive towards the sec- tor’s outlook. Buyers are grasping the last chance to source prod- ucts on the final day.” During the fair period, the HKTDC commissioned an inde- pendent survey, interviewing a total of 1,025 exhibitors and buy- ers about the outlook for the electronics market and new product trends. More than half (54%) of the respondents expect the over- all sales of their companies will increase next year, up 6 percent- age points from the survey in 2016. For major markets, respon- dents are most optimistic about ASEAN (92%), followed by the Chinese Mainland (91%), Latin America (85%) and Taiwan (85%). With the Internet of Things (IoT) becoming more popular, the survey reveals that 84 per cent of respondents think audio visual items will be the product category most benefitted from the smart home trend, followed by wireless charging devices (81%) and systems items for connection with the Internet/mobile network (77%). The industry also believes that consumers are willing to pay a premium of 18% for products with smart home capabilities compared to traditional products. 81 per cent of respondents are optimistic about the virtual reality and augmented reality devices market in the next two years. For related products, they are most optimistic about audio visual items for entertainment purpose (56%), followed by mobile/on-line games (55%). Start-ups receiving orders The Startup zone at the Autumn Electronics Fair this year attracted close to 100 start-ups from seven countries and regions, doubling last year’s number. The Zone provides a one-stop pro- motional platform for start-ups to meet with potential suppliers, buyers and investors. The start-up supporting institution Gadget Excelerator Lab (Gelab) led 12 start-ups to the Autumn Electron- ics Fair this year. Francois Lee, CEO of Gelab, said that the HKTDC had proac- tively promoted the Startup zone through different media plat- forms. “We are happy to see that many buyers from Southeast Asia and the Middle East have made enquiries, and some of them consider placing small orders to test local markets.” E v e n t R e v i e w Global Technologies Nov - Dec 201730 This year’s HKTDCs twin electronics shows showcased a wide variety of electronic products right from 3D printing to virtual reality, robots to drones, eHealth products to home appliances and many start-up inventions.
