20. QUICK BYTE #4 Explore Alternatives to the traditional lecture
23. Take an Online Course What is an online course? An online course is curriculum that is delivered mostly or completely online. There are typically no face-to-face meetings. The online learning experience includes all the educational components of a well-planned traditional-format course, but delivered in an alternative manner to allow for flexibility in location and timing.
25. Take an Online Course Most instructor-led online courses offered by real colleges are cost- and time-prohibitive Look for online classes that include an instructor (these are actually quite hard to find!) Learnable.com, LERN.org Try looking for something else you’re passionate about Things that are not really an online course: Recorded lectures Khan academy
26. Take an Online Course Be prepared to set aside considerable time Be organized Read and post to the discussion board or comments Do the assignments, even if they are just suggestions

Just a few places to think about when searching out conversations
You can have a separate google reader with your work account.
Professional online presence, not just for job hunters!
See what shows up, update it, try to fix up what you’d like to show up but doesn’t
These rank highly in google searches (if filled out with a little info)
Here is an idea for a cohesive online presence, make lots of your profiles reference an extendr.com page.
Slideshare pages rank very well on GoogleThe free version only allows for public uploadsThe mp3 audio feature may be something to consider as UMPresenterdies the slow death.
--download (optional, here it is grayed out, will download whatever original format was), --embed code (always available), --speaker notes are the notes from your powerpoint--comments, favorites, views, link to speaker’s profile
If you think about it too hard, it is easy to talk yourself out of slideshare. But it can be good for a lot of reasons!
This is a link to a prezi presentation to demonstrate an alternative format. Also includes info on chime-in.
Extension is being asked to offer online courses, by the University and by clientele, but first we have to really understand what it is.
Analogy: clothing designer asked to create a space suit. You don’t just put a suit in space! You adapt it FOR space. But it still has the basics: arms, legs, torso.Online course: don’t just put a course online. Adapt it. But it is still essentially a course, and you’re all used to that. (instead of legs, arms, torso, it has subject presentation, activities, and discussion) But why not TAKE one so that we’ve all seen a space suit!!This might be the most ridiculous slide I’ve ever made.
We’re not trying to put on those kind of college courses anywayLOOK FOR COURSES THAT INCLUDE INSTRUCTOR INVOLVEMENT AND CLASS INTERACTION!!! If you do not find anything, try looking for something else you’re passionate about. Languages, hobbies, photography, writing, the point here is to expose yourself to the online courseThings that are not… hundreds of university courses (namely MIT and Yale) are available online for free, these are recorded lectures and are not a course just like Science Friday on NPR is not a courseKhan academy is awesome. If you haven’t heard of it, go there as soon as you get home. But it still isn’t an online course!
Just because it’s online doesn’t mean it won’t take a bunch of time to read/watch and participateBe organized about what parts you’ve completed, and when you’ll carve out time to be online and do any assignments or activitiesThe discussion board is where the most active part of the class will take place, usually with other students posting links and the instructor giving feedback. This is why instructor-led is so important.
