2. Typical of it’s Genre characteristics S Club 7 have a dance routine which is common
for boy/girl bands.
This is also one of their motifs as they are included in all of their videos.
The Lyrics and visuals match when they sing the chorus and a member of the band
jumps up and draw a ‘S’ in the sky.
The close ups of each band member allow us to connect with each of them.
From this video the intertexual reference is that of Grease when they race the cars
and win, and ‘Back to the Future’ as they go back in time in a car.
S Club 7 is a singing performance and a visual storytelling performance.
The video is a commercial exhibitionist, as S Club 7 are singing about themselves and
trying to sell their image.

Because the video is a pop video there is a lot of dance and
smiling
3. Due to it’s genre characteristics this video is a stage performance, where the
band play their instruments rather than dancing around.
The effect used on the video means that throughout the video the music and
visuals link.
There are still close ups of the artists so the audience can connect.
The motif that Kasabian have made is that a lot of their videos are in black and
white. This is so you can associate them with Kasabian.
Days are Forgotten is a Singing performance with a slight edge of modern
art, due to the effect used on the video.
It’s a performance clip because the band play their instruments, and sing.
Also they mime.
There is no narrative for this, they just play instruments.
Because the video is a Rock video, they play their instruments
4. One Direction’s, what makes you beautiful video is a classic Commercial Exhibitionist for a
pop video. There is no narrative theory/story to the video, it alters between miming the
lyrics of the song with close ups of each member and then the visual storytelling, relating to
the lyrics, with 3 actresses demonstrating the meaning of the song. For example, ‘the way
that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed’ the girls flip their hair.
There are many pop conventions in the video:
• Beach
• Smiling
• Sunny
• Walking into sunset
• Love story
Parts of the video make reference to Grease, with it being set on a beach and the teenage
summer love.
The main target audience for 1D is teenage girls, so having close-ups and shots of them
topless in the sea will strongly appeal to them, specifically when they look directly into the
camera and sing ‘Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe
You don't know, You don't know you're beautiful’ will make the viewer feel as though their
singing it directly to them. There is a reference to looking with binoculars and a camera.
5. Is a clear example of a heavy metal televised bard video. The video is based on
the main character, a young boy, nightmares.
Boy
Nightmares Get over the nightmares Doesn’t
Grandad
The video follows the conventions of heavy metal with dark themes (nightmares), dark
lighting. To give it a feel like a horror film, they use flashing lights and close ups of the
band members miming to give it a intense and spooky feel, in post production they have
missed out frames which gives it an confusing and eerie feel. They follow the
convention of rock bands with only singing performance, then the visual storytelling is
actors telling the story that relates tot the lyrics. Also some of the cuts in the video are
in time with the song. There is a reference to looking with a long shot of the Grandad
watching the young boy. Also it has a reference to The Time Bandits.
