1. Photo-shoot Planning

2. Locations
Indoor
• I plan on taking my indoor photos against a plain white/cream wall as it then can
easily be photo shopped – either to change the background or to cut around the
model.
• Indoor lighting will be used. Main ceiling light/ side lamp directed towards model
to create shadow.
• Will experiment taking photos with wooden floor included in the shot. Modern
style.
Outdoor
• Images will be taken against coloured walls of houses to add colour to shot.
• In natural lighting, no artificial
• Portishead Marina/docks will be the location to add character. I chose this
location as it has recently been built up and is modern – fitting with my magazines
style.
Side note: On the day of shooting, the weather was gloomy/grey and so I opted for indoor
shooting with artificial, bright lights aimed onto the model in front of the white wall.
4. Conventional camera angles for music magazines:
• The model/s will usually be photographed face on, usually with the model
looking straight into the lense, breaking the fourth wall.
• However it is also common to see models turn away from the camera,
photographing them from a ¾ angle or slanted angle, where they look more
candid. Perhaps for a more natural look.
• It is conventional to see the model photographed up close, in head shot
fashion from eye level, in order to capture a certain facial expression and to
create a sense of false personalisation between reader and editor.
• Regardless, it is also common to see the model’s whole body photographed.
It is done in a way where you can still see enough of the model’s face +
costume. (Full body in frame).
My plan:
• I aim to photograph my main model for the front cover from the knees up
(mid shot) so I can feature a specific look through the costume but also allow
for the readers to see her face in detail.
• For my additional, secondary images on the contents page, I aim to
photograph Sam at eye level, as a close up head shot in order to catch his
candid facial expression. The article he is featured in is also about fashion so
I feel it would benefit not to show the audience a full preview until they turn
to the specific page.

5. Costumes
I have inserted photos of the costumes I ended up
using. I wanted to get my models in stylish as opposed
to plain clothes. I wanted the featured artist to be as
colourful as possible with bright makeup and bright
but dressy clothes. I dressed her in a blue mesh dress,
a pink low cut dress and a mesh black top with a
glittery pencil skirt. This created for three different
colourful shoots.
For Sam, I dressed him in a jumper that had a quirky
and high fashion/unusual vibe. I feel this will work well
for a fashion article.
6. Props
• I plan to shoot my featured model with props
that will bring out the colour and style in her
costumes. I aim to use pink/bright coloured
flowers to shoot her holding and perhaps some in
her hair. I felt that this would have a
beautiful/feminine touch and that it would bring
out the colours in the design of the page.
• I also plan to photograph Gina posing on a
kitchen stool to achieve a more varied amount of
positions that will help to shape the page.
