When women stick together through their struggles and different obstacles they are forced to
overcome, a special bond is created to go against the odds while discovering peace and freedom.
Through history, women have constantly been oppressed and demoralized because of the different
beliefs people have. Though, when these low spirited women stick together side by side, a turn of
tables occurs resulting in equality between both genders. Taking place in rural Georgia, the
protagonist, Celie, lives in the time of severe gender oppression, and is the victim of abuse and

Finally, a change in Celie's behaviour and overall mental state occurs after she reads Nettie's letters.

in life. Sofia acts as a guide for Celie, influencing her to make independent decisions, and to put up

200). Just like Sofia, Celie responds to Albert's attempt to physically hurt her which gives her the
opportunity to stand up for herself, something she needed to do but could never achieve due to

In the movie, Celie was one who had very low self–esteem since childhood. She felt worthless
within her first marriage which was forced on her because she was sold to a man she called
Mister who only needed someone to care for his kids. Perhaps if she would have had the
opportunity to address those issues within her life with these few stages she might have thought

Purple is more than just a colour in Alice Walker's "The Color Purple". The colour can be seen to
be representative of a number of ideas: it is, "a colour suitable for queens" like Celie says; this
means it is happiness; it is illuminating; it is freedom; it is pain and beauty. Because of its
symbolism, the colour purple can be seen to have a significant influence on the characters' growth
throughout the novel and, therefore, is an appropriate title for the novel.

This is effective because it shocks us the audience and is hard hitting. Spielberg also creates this
mood by tracking the girls running around in the flowers, we as the audience see a close up of the
purple flowers, which establishes their freedom. As the girls are running around in a field of

also the celebration during the film. When Celie emerges from the field and we see that she is
pregnant, Spielberg chooses to use a long shot of Celie which pauses on Celie for a few seconds,

Reading and writing gave her time alone to reflect on herself. Sofia teaches Celie about
self–reassurance, to stand up for herself, how to be a good wife and most important don't back
down to anyone regardless of who they may be. On the other hand, Shug teaches her how to be
beautiful, how to love, and how to live her life as if it was her last. While Celie enjoys, what has
been given to her, she uses these tools to find the identity in herself. I had my own help from my
Aunt who taught me about self–love, how to cope with my tragedies and daily responsibilities.
These were the things that were missing in my life. When Sofia tells Celie about fighting her
family, she explains to Celie that she will continue to fight for the rest of her life. "All my life I
had to fight. I had to fight my daddy. I had to fight my uncles. I had to fight my brothers. A girl
child ain't safe in a family of men, but I ain't never had to fight in my own house"! (Broadway

tragedies in my life I am still fighting a battle of abuse that have been going on for over 30 years.
Some family I talk to but most them I had to permanently let go. I felt that it would be the best

The book I read was The Color Purple by Alice Walker. The story begins with 14
–year–old Celie
writing her first letter to God. She tells how her "father" rapes her when he mother refuses his
advances in her sickened state. Soon after, her mother dies and she has a child. Not long after, she
has another child by the man she calls her father and begins to be concerned for the safety of her
little sister as well. Celie goes on to be married to a man chosen for her, Albert, even though his
first choice is her sister Nettie. All she does is work, cook and clean, care for his children, and
satisfy his "needs". Nettie runs away from home and moves in with Celie and her husband. That is,

One day, Celie's husband's ill ex–lover, Shug, comes to live with them. In the beginning, Shug is
anything but nice to Celie, making her do everything for her and talking badly to her. As time
goes on, Celie and Shug become closer as Celie cares for her. They compare their experiences that
they had with Albert, and Shug teaches her things about her body and sex. Shug and Celie grow
even closer, and when Shug returns to visit she discovers Nettie's letters that Albert was hiding.
They then tell him that Celie is moving back to Memphis with Shug and her husband Grady. From
the letters, Celie learns that her sister is alive as a missionary in Africa. Soon, Celie makes a
business for herself designing pants and selling them. Eventually, Celie finds out the man who
raped her was her stepfather and not her biological one. Soon after, he dies, leaving Celie and Nettie
with the house, land, and store he owned. Shug and Celie's relationship goes on to mostly end and
she moves into the house she inherited to prepare it for her sister's return. During this time she
