For our Creativity and Innovation Management class, we were to analyse a well established and successful creative practice by any company and we chose Disney's Creative Strategy, which has three roles.
6. Disney's creative strategy
Dreamer, Realistic,
Critic
Inspired by Walt Disney's mantra of "if you can dream
you can do it"
Three different Walts: the dreamer, the realist, and
the spoiler.
Parallel thinking: used to generate, evaluate, critique ideas
and solve problems.
Bridges the gap between imagination and reality.
7. “I can never stand still. I must
explore and experiment. I am never
satisfied with my work. I resent
limitations.” – Walt Disney
“We cannot do fantastic things
unless we know what is real and
what is not” – Walt Disney
"Whenever I go on a ride, I'm always
thinking of what's wrong with the
thing and how it can be improved."" –
Walt Disney
8. Dreamer
What do we want?
What is the solution?
How do we imagine the solution?
What are the benefits of this solution?
YOU DONT WANT
ANYONE
TO STOP YOU OR ANY
CRITICAL VOICE
9. Realistic
How can we apply this idea in reality?
What is the action plan?
Whats the timeline?
How to evaluate the idea?
YOU DONT NEED ANY
FLIGHTS OR FANTASIES
10. Critic
What could be wrong with the idea?
What is missing?
Why cannot we apply it?
What are the weaknesses in the plan?
FALL OUT OF LOVE WITH
YOUR OWN INGENIOUS
MAKE IT BETTER
11. v/sDisney's Strategy 6 Thinking Hats

Process Parallel
1 group - 3 roles 6 persons - 6 roles
Constant sequence Any sequence
No disagreement Often disagreement
No influencing Chance of influencing
12. Challenges
What might come in way?
A dreamer without a realist
cannot turn ideas into
tangible expressions.
A critic and a dreamer
without a realist just become
stuck in a perpetual
conflict.
A dreamer and a realist
might create things, but they
might not achieve a high
degree of quality without a
critic.
13. Challenges
Other
It is important to see who is
involved in this procedure, not
everyone is creative or
imaginative.
When we go through each
role, the creativity aspect of
the entire process might
diminish.
While using this strategy in
groups, it's not necessary that
all group members have
adopted to the same role at
the same stage
14. RECOMMENDATIONS
The critic can be between the Dreamer
and the Realistic, in order to avoid
wastage of resources and time.
16. LEARNINGS
Thinking out of the box, makes you
think
AROUND THE BOX, this strategy
facilitates thinking in another box!
The boss is not always right!!
Least likely people may have the best
ideas!
There's no bad idea!
Laugh at yourself...
Everything may not go as planned.
