Sometimes it requires flexibility, alertness, and the ability to adapt. Academic libraries are in the midst of a digital transformation, but in this transitional period some real tensions demand strategic nuance. An expert in the changing roles of the library, scholarly publisher, and learned society, keynote speaker Roger Schonfeld will lead us through the three tensions underlying the changing library environment. Each of these tensions is a budgetary tension, and each of them is a systems tension, and for each of them the library would benefit from a more sophisticated engagement by publishers and vendors.

The library collection has been central to library identity and service, however we are now seeing major changes in how libraries help discover, curate and create collections. This is a response to evolving research and learning behaviors in a network environment. This presentation considers trends which are influencing how we think about library curatorial activities and are reshaping their collections. The first direction is the ‘inside-out library’ which is a response to the reorganization of research work by the digital environment. The second is the facilitated collections, which is a response to the reorganization of the information space by the network. The presentation discusses three ways in which we are thinking differently about collections: the inside out collection, the facilitated collection, and the collective collection.

Part 1 focuses on selecting materials to digitize and the basics of reformatting. We’ll start with some recommendations for planning a successful project and consider how your digital collections can fit into the statewide and national landscape of digital content. We’ll discuss copyright concerns in order to help you answer the question “CAN I put this online?” And we’ll explore the vocabulary of digital images, including pixels, resolution and bit depth as well as tools and best practices for scanning photographs and documents.

For too long the catalogue has been an extension of proprietary systems, offering us little opportunity to influence the functionality and usability of this mission-critical tool. While user expectations and our competition have changed radically, catalogues have not. We will look at some current best-in-class catalogue examples, and consider the future of the catalogue, looking at how we can embrace next-generation trends like Linked Data and the Semantic Web. By advocating for systems that provide openness and flexibility, libraries will be empowered to face an uncertain technological future.

Are the highly selective models of digital content creation satisfying user demands for increasing access to our vast collection holdings? In this era of decreasing library budgets and increasing responsibilities, is such a level of staffing possible at any but the well-funded libraries? As a recent article in the New York Times estimated, it would take 1,800 years for the National Archives to digitize its text holdings at the current rate of digitization1. Since November 2005, the University of Maryland libraries has engaged in another model for digitization: a workflow model that harnesses the digitization already being done by archivists and other staff for requests by patrons. By “crowdsourcing” selection decisions in this way the libraries have built a collection of over 5,000 objects from the holdings of the University Archives and Historical Manuscripts. This model is based on two main principles: · Selection: As one part of a programmatic approach to digitization, selections are based on user request and added to the publicly accessible digital repository · Image capture: Digitization itself proceeds on the premise that creating useful surrogates is more important than digital reformatting. The path to a successful workflow is fraught with perils, though. The presenters will discuss the issues that have proven most effective and most difficult in the large-scale digitization workflow in place at UM. They will highlight the technical requirements chosen for images, metadata, and quality control and speak about how they were, or in some cases were not, able to achieve them. In bringing to light these issues we hope to continue an ongoing conversation (most recently articulated at OCLC\'s \"Digitization Matters\" forum) about the purpose of digital collections and standards of digital surrogate creation, especially in the age of mass digitization projects. We hope to explore need to harness all of the library’s expertise and resources where they can best be deployed.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
