Cancer Control Plan: 2011-2015

4. Background
 The Maine Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan serves as a blueprint for
what can and should be done at the state and local levels to further cancer
prevention, detection and care efforts in Maine.
 The goal of the Maine Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan is to
promote and preserve the health and quality of life of the people and
communities of Maine by minimizing the impact of cancer.
 Outlines a strategic approach to minimizing the impact of cancer on
Maine’s people and communities.
 Encourages and supports coordination and collaboration
 5-year plan
 This is the third edition of the plan!

 May 2009 MCC Cancer Plan Revision Planning Meeting
 June 2009 Review Cancer Plan sections and develop
goals/objectives; Identify new topic areas as needed
 July 2009 Begin developing strategies
 September 2009 Finalize strategies
 October 2009 MCC Annual Meeting (working meeting!)

 The 2011-2015 Maine Cancer Plan
is organized into four sections
 Three goal sections:
Section II: Overarching Issues
Impacting Cancer in Maine
Section III: Affecting the Cancer
Continuum
Section IV: Working Together to
Change Cancer in Maine

Section II: Overarching Issues Impacting Cancer in Maine
This section looks at issues that are common to all cancers and
all aspects of the cancer continuum.
Priorities and issues included in this section are interwoven
and reflected throughout all sections of the plan:
 Public Policy, Legislation, and Funding
 Disparities
 Data and Surveillance

10. Maine Cancer Plan 2011-2015
Section III: Affecting the Cancer Continuum
This section looks at ways to make an impact on cancer at every
point of the continuum.
Topics in this section include:
 Primary Prevention
 Early Detection
 Treatment
 Rehabilitation and Survivorship
 Palliation and End-of-Life Care

This section looks at the administration of the plan itself.

14. Winds of Change Within the Consortium
 What is new?
 Becoming a 501(c)(3)
 501(c)(3) = tax exempt or a charitable organization
 MCC will not operate as a foundation, but grants may be awarded
 Structure established to support 501(c)(3) status and Cancer Plan
 Need to seek grant funding and grant writing support
 What will remain unchanged?
Consortium – Latin word - an association of two or more individuals,
parties, organizations, etc (or any combination of these entities) with
the objective of participating in a common activity or pooling their
resources for achieving a common goal.

(or your organization’s) interests and activities!
 Encourage other key individuals/organizations to take
part in the Maine Cancer Consortium and contribute to
the achievement of the Maine Cancer Plan!
 Be a champion for the new plan!
 Continue the outstanding work you are doing to
reduce the burden of cancer in Maine, and make our
new plan a successful one!
