last 60 years, with a fivefold increase in deaths from
alcohol-related diseases such as liver cirrhosis.
• Only 6% of people with alcohol dependence access
treatment.
• There were 8.4 opiate and/or crack users per 1,000 of
population in England in 2011/12.
• 33% of the prison population has a history of heroin
use compared to less than 1% of the general
population.
