INTRODUCTION 
Walking is the most common activity in human 
life. 
When a person walks, he loses energy to the 
road. 
This energy can be tapped and converted in the 
usable form such as in electrical form.
Conventional & Non-conventional 
Energy Sources 
Energy produced by coal, petroleum, natural 
gas etc. are called conventional sources. 
 where as the sources like biomass, wind, 
solar etc. are called non conventional energy 
sources.
AN ALTERNATIVE ENERGY 
SOURCE 
 Footsteps are an untapped 
natural resource. 
 The Challenge – convert 
footstep energy to electrical 
energy. 
 The Solution – using 
piezoelectric material.
NEED OF THE SYSTEM 
The utilization of waste energy of foot power 
with human motion is very important for 
highly populated countries. 
India and China where the roads, railway 
stations, temples, etc. are all over crowded and 
millions of people move around the clock.
BASIC PRINCIPLE 
When a pedestrian steps on the top plate of the 
device, the plate will dip down slightly. 
The downward movement of the plate results in 
rotation of the shaft of an electrical alternator 
fitted in the device.

WORKING 
The pushing power is converted into electricity 
The piezoelectric material is fixed at the plane. 
The spring is used to return the inclined step in 
same position by releasing the load. 
The shaft of generator is connected to the 
piezoelectric material. DC is generated.
APPLICATIONS
APPLICATION IN STREET LIGHTNING
ADVANTAGES 
Power generation is simply walking on step. 
 Power also generated by running. 
No need fuel input. 
This is a Non-conventional system. 
Battery is used to store the generated power.
DISADVANTAGES 
Only applicable for the particular place. 
Initial cost of this arrangement is high. 
Tiles used are durable but not everlasting.
