A short presentation on Virtual and Augmented Reality in libraries and what you can use today to get started showing the public how this technology will change their lives.
4. 360 VIDEO
• This type of video is captured using multiple cameras to create
a fully spherical film.
• This means you can turn your head within a VR experience and
see all around you
• And with new platforms like YouTube 360, this type of content
isn’t just used in VR. 360 degree video viewers can use their
mouse to scroll around the video for a different perspective.
5. VIRTUAL REALITY
• A three-dimensional, computer generated environment which
can be explored and interacted with by a person.
• That person becomes part of this virtual world or is immersed
within this environment
• Able to manipulate objects or perform a series of actions.
• 360 Sound is expected but is currently not always inclusive

7. AUGMENTED REALITY
• Hardest to accomplish
• Fully locational overlay on Reality
• Google Translate
• IKEA
• Promise of the Google Glass next generation
• Hololens & Magic Leap
8. WHO IS DOING WHAT?
• USAF/Military
• HUD &
• Google Glass
• Google Cardboard
• Merge
• View Master
• Gear
• Dream
• Oculus
• Vive
• Microsoft HoloLens
• Playstation View
• Meta2
• Magic Leap

11. WHY IN LIBRARIES?
• Virtual Reality is going to happen, we need to be there
• Maybe not right now but soon
• Start small with Google Cardboard or Merge and grow
• Augmented Reality is happening now
• More relevant for staff, productivity
• Google Translate is a great tool to start
12. WHAT CAN YOU DO NOW?
There are few examples to get started
• Creation Station visit
• Expanded class & hands on with the gear
• Google Cardboard
• Cardboard App
• Cardboard Camera
• Expeditions
Reality – is there a Philosopher in the house?
Mediated Reality – fancy bus benches
Mixed Reality – Interactivity between computer and person in a limited environment {now a marketing term as well}
360 video – stereoscopic films, etc.
Virtual Reality – computer generated environment to explore, sound is expected
Immersive Reality – computer generated environment to interact with fully, sound is required
Augmented Reality – fully locational overlay
Google Translate
IKEA
Pepsi bus bench ad – Mediated Reality
HTV Vive intro video
Google Glass is not dead Enterprise and Military are doing well
