Aphrodite was the Greek goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and procreation. She brought love into the world and represented the sensual side, though she could be both generous and mean. There are two theories about her birth and she is known as "she who shines from the foam." She was forced to marry Hephaestus but is often depicted in fine art as the Roman equivalent, Venus, goddess of love and beauty.
