According to a new report
from IDC, Android shipped
1.1B smartphone units in
2014, accounting for 81.5%
of the global OS market. This
number was up 32.0% from
the 802.2 million units
shipped in 2013.
Apple’s iOS dipped to 14.8%
OS market share, decreased
slightly from its 15.1% share
in 2013. 192.7M devices
were shipped in 2014, up
25.6% from the 153.4 million
units shipped in 2013.

Generally, Android’s and iOS’s
positions remain quite steady
over the year.
Windows Phone gradually
grows in developers’
mindshare, attracting 30% of
mobile developers, although
it is still not making any
breakthrough with OS share
as well as number of apps.

In terms of popularity, JAVA
is the most used language
according to the number of
Android developers.
20% mobile developers use
Swift, which is a remarkable
number for a new language.
Since Apple clearly stated
that the language was the
future for their platforms, the
result was obvious. Although
Objective C will be around for
a long time, learning Swift
should not be taken lightly for
iOS developers.

App Stores Growth

The number of apps in the Google
Play Store grew by more than 50%
last year, outpacing Apple's App
Store for the first time, according
to AppFigures.
Google Play has over 1.43 million
available apps, compared to just
1.21 million for Apple’s App Store,
a difference of about 17%.
However, iOS still makes much
more money than the Google Play
store. App Store apps brought in
70% more revenue than Google
Play apps for the whole year,

iOS 8 has seen a big adoption rate
since its first release in
Septermber last year and steadily
grew through out the year.
Accounted for 23% and 8% of
iPhone and iPad’s users
accordingly end of Q1/2015.
Along with the market share gain
of iOS 8, its predecessor version
fell drastically as the result of a
large portion of user upgrading
from iOS 7.
Interestingly, iOS 5 and 6 slightly
decline as of a large number of
Vietnamese users don’t want to
upgrade their early model devices.

Lollipop, Google’s latest OS has a
low rate of adoption. The OS
accounts for 18% of total Android
users.
Kitkat takes 54% of Android OS
market, maintaining its leading
position and keeps gaining its
share from Jelly Bean’s users. JB
fell to 25%, equally 10% drop
compared to last quarter.
Among tablet users, JB is
relatively more favored than
Kitkat.
