RSS Faculty Feed Service
1. FACULTY RSS SERVICE
The latest information delivered to your inbox
Andrea D. Reed, Media & Digital Librarian
Warner Memorial Library, Eastern University
2. What it offers…
• Saves time
• Delivers the latest research on a topic
• Manages your popular searches
• Simplifies your sources for information
3. What is an RSS feed?
• An RSS feed is
– an XML file that
– “disseminates real-time information
– via a subscription on the Internet”
(Webster’s New Millennium Dictionary of English)
• In other words…
– every time site content is updated, you get a
notification.
4. How the service works
• First we take your
– frequently read (electronic) journals and
– commonly searched for topics
• Then we combined them into two RSS feeds
• Finally, we subscribe you to these feeds using
an email address of your choice (eastern.edu,
hotmail.com, yahoo.com, gmail.com, etc.)
5. What to expect
• Shortly after you are subscribed to the feeds,
you will begin receiving emails anytime new
information is posted to your selected
electronic journal(s), and/or search(es)
– For example, when a new issue or new article
becomes available
• The email will contain ONLY hyperlinks to this
updated content, not the articles
– Does not take up space in your email account
6. Examples
Search alerts created in the following
databases:
•EbscoHost, WilsonWeb, ProQuest, etc.
