Abstract: This research aims to demonstrate the career opportunities for architecture degree in
Arts and Design. Architecture careers in arts and design are more diverse than you would expect,
with options such as: Artist, Industrial Design, Furniture Design, Textile Designer, Graphic
Designer, Video Game Designer and Photographer. The relationship between art and architecture
is one that has fascinated designers and artists for centuries. The balance can be hard to get right,
and the process can be a challenging one. In this study there many famous architects that also
known on arts and design careers.

1. Introduction
Architecture has always shared a blurred line with arts and design. Perhaps it’s not as pure of an
art form as sculpture, but in addition to functioning as an occupiable space, it still needs to inspire
and make an emotional impact. Art is in the discussion. Think of a museum – the primary vision
or design intent is to create a backdrop for the art itself. If the architecture doesn’t support the
needs of the building, the art is clearly disengaged from the architecture itself.
In addition to the sculptural quality of a building, many types of facilities have placed an
importance on art. For example, hospitals have art programs. It’s a device to help people connect
to nature. Art has that extra dimension to help people relax and focus when they are sick.
If you discover after graduation that architecture is not for you, then arts and design may be.
Architecture is already a type of design, or is it the other way around of art. Either way, it makes
it simpler to establish direct connections between your architectural education and your career as
an artist or designer. Combining two fields, such as graphic design and architecture, is another
possibility. Perhaps your interest is to make architectural communication more accessible through
visuals. Despite this, many freshly graduated architects find themselves unsure about where to
begin, or deciding that they actually don’t want to be architects at all. There are 7 careers you can
pursue with a degree in architecture, which may help some overcome the daunting task of
beginning to think about and plan for the professional life that awaits.

Careers in Arts and Design
1. Artists
An artist is a person who performs any of the creative arts. This captures all forms of art.
It is important to highlight that the term artist is not only attributed for those who create art
as an occupation, but also for those who are skilled in a particular activity such as ,
designing, composing, etc. The specialty of an artist is that he is able to create art for the
sake of art itself without needing any ulterior motives. Some artists create their works of
art for the satisfaction of the society in which they live. In this case, they have to confine
to the societal demands and limitations. However, there are also others who go beyond the
social restrictions and create art for the pleasure of creating. It is believed that through art
the artist can create a change in society. This is because art appeals to all senses of people.
1. Olafur Eliasson
A visual artist who works in a wide range of media, including installation, painting,
sculpture, photography, and film.Although Olafur Eliasson did not study architecture,
he works with many architects at Studio Olafur Eliasson, exemplifying how
harmonious and imperative the relationship between space and art is. The spatial
reasoning and visualization skills one gains from an education in architecture lends
themselves perfectly to installation art, sculpture and spatial experiences, without the
necessity for functionality.

Works
1. The Weather Project, 2003
The grand volume of Turbine Hall is nothing but an illusion created by the mirrored ceiling.
The semi-circular glass with a halo of monochromatic lights makes it a round sun when
seen. The fog all around the hall creates fuzzy feelings of a bleak sunny day. People seen
on the floor, laying and cherishing their reflection in the ceiling at Tate Modern is what
‘The weather project’ is about.
2. Façade of Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Center. 2005-2011
Eliasson’s roots were always reflected in his work. The Icelandic artist used the
crystallized basalt structure in his commissioned facade project with a ‘quasi brick’
module. The blend of normality and anomaly in the modules credit the exteriors as a
disordered one and of fickle quality that couldn’t be accomplished through stacking 3D
squares. Therefore, the exteriors for Harpa are both stylishly and practically vital to the
structure.

2. Pablo Antonio
The Binondo-born Antonio was mentored by Tomas Mapua, but then had to drop out of
school. He was then sent to the University of London by his patron Don Ramon Arevalo,
and it was here that he earned his architecture degree. He was celebrated for his art deco
style, which was a departure from the neoclassicism that reigned back then. Some of his
works include the Far Eastern University main building, the White Cross Children's Home,
the Manila Polo Club, and the Ideal, Lyric, and Galaxy Theaters.

Works
1. Far Eastern University
Five buildings in the Sampaloc Campus was designed by Pablo Antonio—the Nicanor
I. Reyes Hall, the FEU East Asia College of Engineering and Computer Studies, the
Law and Nursing Building, the Auditorium and Administration Building and the
Science Building. In 2005, it was cited with an Honorable Mention by the UNESCO
Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation for “returning
buildings and landscape to their original appearance, maintaining the architectural
integrity of the Art Deco structures.”
3. White Cross
Opened in 1937, White Cross Children’s Home was originally meant to take care of the
children of Tuberculosis patients. Now, it has become a safe haven for children of poor
unwed mothers, of physically incapacitated parents, of prisoners, and of victims of rape or
incest. The building—with its clean lines—is designed literally like a cross. It is punctuated
by a bas-relief designed by Italian sculptor Francesco Monti featuring children at play.
2. Industrial Designer
Several architecture firms have branched into industrial design, due to their close
creative ties. However, industrial design focuses on smaller scale objects of mass
6 Architecture Career in Arts and Design
production, as opposed to large-scale buildings designed for a specific context. If the
prospect of designing something enormous, permanent, and landscape changing sounds
all too intimidating, industrial design is a great, smaller scaled alternative. Industrial
Design (ID) is the professional practice of designing products, devices, objects, and
services used by millions of people around the world every day. Industrial designers
typically focus on the physical appearance, functionality, and manufacturability of a
product, though they are often involved in far more during a development cycle.
1. Foster and Partners
Foster and Partners are one of the most innovative and integrated design practices in the
world. Their approach is to create sustainable architecture. The services they provide for
their industrial design work are just as important as their architectural endeavors.
The focus of product design is to understand the importance of necessity – how a product
can respond to its needs. Foster and Partners designed its first product in 1987 called the
Nomos Desking System. What started out as a custom design for an office became a
subsequent commission by furniture manufacturer, Tecno. This product has earned the
Design Centre Award Baden-Württemberg International Design Award in Italy and is a
continuing manufactured product.

2. Zaha Hadid
ZHA has designed numerous innovative furniture and products. To start, the practice
focuses on all scales, creating “transformative cultural, corporate, residential and other
spaces” that harmonize with the surroundings. As a global leader, ZHA continues to
pioneer research and design investigation, collaboration with designers, engineers, artists,
and clients, and the implantation of technologies that aids in achieving the “realization of
fluid, dynamic, and complex architectural structures”. As part of this focus, Zaha has
pushed her work to become experiments that go beyond the boundaries of architecture and
urban design.
8 Architecture Career in Arts and Design
In all fields of design, her work is encompassed through a visionary aesthetic that exploits the
latest technology and material innovations. A famous piece of hers is the Serac Bench, which was
developed as an urban sculpture for seating and resting. The form of the bench articulates a
landscape that is fluid and continuous in nature, creating an experience of connectivity through
solid and void, object and ground, and form and function. Zaha is always making innovative and
over-the-top designs for her products.
3. Furniture Designer
Even more so than industrial design, furniture design can be seen as architecture’s little
sister. Countless famous architects have made significant contributions to furniture
design: Charles and Ray Eames, Alvar Aalto and Arne Jacobsen, among others.
Contemporary architects such as Zaha Hadid Architects are following suit, proving that the
two can even be done simultaneously. Furniture designers design furniture and related
products for industrial, commercial and domestic clients balancing innovation, aesthetic
appeal and functionality. They create designs for mass-produced as well as handcrafted
furniture products. They must consider the function of an item of furniture, the way it looks
and the limitations of the material that it is made from.
9 Architecture Career in Arts and Design
1. Le Corbusier
Le Corbusier is one of the most beloved and renowned architects in the world – but he
didn’t just design buildings. His LC3 collection of chairs and sofas have become
collectibles, with their oversized, boxy cushions and an unexpectedly stripped back
wire frame, these pieces are statement-making and surprisingly cozy.
2. Frank Gehry
Canadian architect Frank Gehry has designed some of the most memorable buildings
around the world, from the Guggenheim in Bilbao to the AGO in Toronto. But before
he became a household name, Gehry designed the Wiggle Chair, one of the first pieces
of furniture ever made from cardboard. The chair was constructed using layers of
corrugated cardboard glued together in alternating directions. The substantial material
offsets its playfully simple design.

3. Kenneth Cobonpue
Designer Cobonpue became known because of the uniqueness of his designs. He used
bamboo, rattan, and abaca—materials that are native to the Philippines—in making his
famous creations. He integrated natural materials through innovative handmade production
processes. His furniture is drafted or bent in different ways, creating creative and
remarkable furniture designs.
11 Architecture Career in Arts and Design
4. Textile Designer
Designing textiles requires sensitivity for color, tactility, construction, patterns and forms,
all of which are developed during any student’s years at architecture school. The
relationship between "skin" and structure is in some ways even more literal than in a
building, as the two merge together. High fashion is also reminiscent of architecture in
many ways, adopting the geometric and sculptural constructions of contemporary
buildings. Textile designers create designs for woven, knitted or printed fabrics. These can
be used for furnishings, clothing, packaging and floor and wall coverings. Textile designers
have to research trends and forecasts in the textile industry. This helps to determine what
is likely to sell, and leads to increased knowledge of new manufacturing technology.
12 Architecture Career in Arts and Design
1. Charles Francis Annesley Voysey
He was an English architect and furniture and textile designer. Voysey's early work
was as a designer of wallpapers, fabrics and furnishings in a Arts and Crafts style and
he made important contribution to the Modern Style (British Art Nouveau style), and
was recognized by the seminal The Studio magazine. He is renowned as the architect
of several country houses.
He was one of the first people to understand and appreciate the significance
of industrial design. He has been considered one of the pioneers of Modern
Architecture, a notion which he rejected. His English domestic architecture draws
heavily on vernacular rather than academic tradition, influenced by the ideas of Herbert
Tudor Buckland (1869–1951) and Augustus Pugin (1812–1852).
Voysey's designs in the field of applied art included furniture, wallpapers, fabrics,
carpets, tiles, metalwork, ceramics and graphic design. Sometimes he designed
artefacts specially for his own buildings, and sometimes he sold designs to
manufacturers for wider use.

2. Jj Aquino
Jj Aquino is making a drastic career change. From designing buildings as a professional
architect, he's made the switch to designing clothes—and his choice of medium when it
comes to breathing life into his sketches is far from what you'd normally guess. JJ's
sartorial DNA is ingrained with a deep sense of Filipino pride, and working with
handwoven weaves is what landed him as Fashion Institute of the Philippines' (FIP) 2019
Designer of the Year. He's determined to bring a contemporary yet traditional twist to the
local streetwear scene.
Fresh from his fashion school graduation, JJ is making a huge leap into the international
scene. He'll bring his merged architectural knowledge and fashion talent to the Lao
Fashion Week this September, hoping to show that slow fashion can also have an edgy
side and a deeper cause

5. Graphic Designer
Graphic design is the way in which we take in our world and identify it. It is invaluable
when it comes to communication. It can also be so aesthetically pleasing that one can
hardly resist becoming a graphic designer. Taking a short course in graphic design to
supplement a degree in architecture can open up a range of possibilities to still work
within the field, but take charge of tasks that are more suited to your interests in
communication.
1. Herber Bayer
Herbert Bayer was an Austrian designer and graphic designer who utilized various
media to create dynamic typefaces, paintings, and architecture. He trained as an
architect and began graphic design projects at age 36. His work is characterized by
its Minimalist and crisp aesthetic, developed from his time studying at Walter
Gropius’ influential Bauhaus school.
15 Architecture Career in Arts and Design
2. Bob Noorda
Bob Noorda was a Dutch designer and architect who came to the fore as one of the
main artificers of the renewal of twentieth-century Italian graphic art. He set up the
graphic agency Unimark International along with the designer Massimo Vignelli,
which was famous for implementing a modern approach to design for international
clients such as IBM, Pirelli, and the New York subway system, for which they
redesigned the entire communication system.

6. Video Game Designer
The near-limitless boundaries that come with designing a virtual world may be one of
the most fun things a newly graduated architect could think of doing with their
education. Constructing the architecture of a video game is a way of letting your
imagination roam free, but could also add more depth to your spatial reasoning.
17 Architecture Career in Arts and Design
1. Dan Van Burren
Dan Van Buren is one of the architects that helped in the development of the game,
The Witness, describes the game design experience as the most exciting highlight
of his career. The game launched in 2015 is believed to be the first collaboration of
game developers, architects, and landscape architects. The Witness is a game set
on an island with a few structures with the majority of the landscape. Dan believes
that after 5-7 years of study of design for efficient user experience, architects can
conceptualize and help game developers create an immersible space to enhance the
gaming experience.

2. Maia Levinshtein
Maia Levinshtein, a former architecture student currently working as a game
designer. He believes studying architecture gives him an upper hand in visualizing
spaces in 3D with the knowledge of cultural history and iconography. Architectural
knowledge helps him create convincing virtual worlds for the gaming experience.
Maia shares how several games create a hyper-realistic gaming environment yet
fail to deliver the intricate details that make the experience better. He believes that
both architects and game designers could work simultaneously to create a more
layered and authentic gaming atmosphere.

7. Photographer
Architecture photography is becoming increasingly popular, possibly due to the beautiful
geometry that can emerge by constraining something within a lens. Photography concerns
itself more with the aesthetic, with the object and the composition in that unique moment,
within that specific frame. It concerns itself with the fleeting atmosphere, more than with
the permanent organization of people and spaces. Yet it still consists of composition,
colour, environment and experiences.
1. Zsolt Hlinka
Zsolt is a Hungarian photographer with a strong portfolio in architecture, interior, and
real estate photos. He does commissions for clients and takes photos of urban life. Zsolt
has won several awards in the field of urban and architectural photography. His work has
been featured in exhibitions worldwide.
20 Architecture Career in Arts and Design
2. Fernando Guerra
Fernando is a professional architect. Unsurprising that his photography lends an
unconventional perspective of the focal building. He takes a conscious approach to
architecture photography and revers the structure and purpose of each subject.

3. Celso Beringuel Creer II
Leyte native Arch. Celso Beringuel Creer II is a topnotcher, a 6th
Placer, in the
Architecture Licensure Examination given by the Philippine Regulation Commission.
He is the first Filipino to take the first spot in the Milano Expo in Italy and the Khalifa
International Date Palm Awards, Date Palms Through the Eyes of the World
Photography Competition. To date, he garnered more than 350 photography awards in
the United Arab Emirates and in international settings in addition to internet and web-
based competitions.
4. Discussion
As architects advance in their professions, others explore occupations and hobbies
outside of architecture. When we all know, as professionals advance in their jobs, they set
new objectives for themselves. Occasionally, professionals discover a desire to work in a
new sector shortly after graduating from college or university. Occasionally, professionals
will alter their career goals after gaining expertise in their sector. Throughout their careers,
22 Architecture Career in Arts and Design
some professionals may develop new hobbies or interests, and they may choose to explore
those passions by transferring to a new field of employment. Some individuals may
contemplate changing careers in order to pursue more professional options, such as
management or executive-level positions that may be inaccessible in their present sector.
Professionals may opt to change careers if they believe they may earn a greater pay that
meets their demands. Occasionally, if a professional relocates to a region with fewer work
options in their present career, they may seek employment in a different field.
5.Conclusion
Arts, design, and architecture are inextricably linked by their design, designer, and
individual meanings. Both are built on the same organizational principles, with the same visual
features, and with the same sensory engagement. Both art and architecture have a deeper purpose.
They are expressive and communicative at the same time. The artist "shapes" a thing in order to
visually communicate a complicated collection of thoughts, which the audience perceives. While
architects design livable or useable places, their architectural constructions are equally significant
in and of themselves. Numerous architects are pursuing careers in fields related to architecture,
including graphic design, which one of the architects may pursue since they studied visual
presentation for their ideas, such as Lumion and Photoshop, and video editing, which is
conceivable for a film maker like Eliasson. In industrial design, architects who divert their focus
away from the physical environment and toward smaller products are frequently motivated — at
least initially – by what they perceive as need. They strive to locate the appropriate furniture, signs,
and lighting for their interiors and to convince their customer that they are the ideal designers.
These architects soon develop an appreciation for the smaller scale and then seek out possibilities
to create additional objects in the hope that some may be mass produced. This is exacerbated
further by manufacturers approaching 'famous personalities' to use their signature to market the
goods. Architectural photography is a subgenre of photography that focuses on photographing
structures or buildings.
As a result, it also entails capturing the interiors and exteriors of constructions, buildings,
bridges, and cityscapes. This is why many architects go into the field of photography. This type of
photography is less dynamic, since it requires you to spend considerable time considering picture
or surroundings. As a result, you may not require a camera with a fast shutter speed or continuous
shooting option. Nonetheless, you must prioritize the image's quality. In general, people may
become interested in a job connected to architecture and find it more lucrative than becoming an
architect, or they may pick it as a result of their enthusiasm for arts and design, despite the fact
that architecture is already a type of art.

Architecture Careers in Arts and Design Guide

  • 1. 1 Architecture Career in Arts and Design Architecture Career in Arts and Design College of Engineering and Architecture, Department of Architecture. Professional Practice 3- Global Practice in the 21st Century Ar.Enp. Gerelson Bernardino, uap,mcm Bautista, Ariane Joy R. Abstract: This research aims to demonstrate the career opportunities for architecture degree in Arts and Design. Architecture careers in arts and design are more diverse than you would expect, with options such as: Artist, Industrial Design, Furniture Design, Textile Designer, Graphic Designer, Video Game Designer and Photographer. The relationship between art and architecture is one that has fascinated designers and artists for centuries. The balance can be hard to get right, and the process can be a challenging one. In this study there many famous architects that also known on arts and design careers. ______________________________________________________________________________ 1. Introduction Architecture has always shared a blurred line with arts and design. Perhaps it’s not as pure of an art form as sculpture, but in addition to functioning as an occupiable space, it still needs to inspire and make an emotional impact. Art is in the discussion. Think of a museum – the primary vision or design intent is to create a backdrop for the art itself. If the architecture doesn’t support the needs of the building, the art is clearly disengaged from the architecture itself. In addition to the sculptural quality of a building, many types of facilities have placed an importance on art. For example, hospitals have art programs. It’s a device to help people connect to nature. Art has that extra dimension to help people relax and focus when they are sick. If you discover after graduation that architecture is not for you, then arts and design may be. Architecture is already a type of design, or is it the other way around of art. Either way, it makes it simpler to establish direct connections between your architectural education and your career as an artist or designer. Combining two fields, such as graphic design and architecture, is another possibility. Perhaps your interest is to make architectural communication more accessible through visuals. Despite this, many freshly graduated architects find themselves unsure about where to begin, or deciding that they actually don’t want to be architects at all. There are 7 careers you can pursue with a degree in architecture, which may help some overcome the daunting task of beginning to think about and plan for the professional life that awaits.
  • 2. 2 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 2. Methodology This research was developed by gathering information based on credible pages available on websites and organizations that are guidelines, addressing the practice in architecture and arts and design in general. This article was written in English to reach a larger audience. The majority of the content is derived from reliable sources and has been subjected to additional research to validate the acquired information. Finally, to correctly set out the content and guarantee that the audience comprehended it, this essay employed an IMRAD format study style 3. Results Careers in Arts and Design 1. Artists An artist is a person who performs any of the creative arts. This captures all forms of art. It is important to highlight that the term artist is not only attributed for those who create art as an occupation, but also for those who are skilled in a particular activity such as , designing, composing, etc. The specialty of an artist is that he is able to create art for the sake of art itself without needing any ulterior motives. Some artists create their works of art for the satisfaction of the society in which they live. In this case, they have to confine to the societal demands and limitations. However, there are also others who go beyond the social restrictions and create art for the pleasure of creating. It is believed that through art the artist can create a change in society. This is because art appeals to all senses of people. 1. Olafur Eliasson A visual artist who works in a wide range of media, including installation, painting, sculpture, photography, and film.Although Olafur Eliasson did not study architecture, he works with many architects at Studio Olafur Eliasson, exemplifying how harmonious and imperative the relationship between space and art is. The spatial reasoning and visualization skills one gains from an education in architecture lends themselves perfectly to installation art, sculpture and spatial experiences, without the necessity for functionality.
  • 3. 3 Architecture Career in Arts and Design Works 1. The Weather Project, 2003 The grand volume of Turbine Hall is nothing but an illusion created by the mirrored ceiling. The semi-circular glass with a halo of monochromatic lights makes it a round sun when seen. The fog all around the hall creates fuzzy feelings of a bleak sunny day. People seen on the floor, laying and cherishing their reflection in the ceiling at Tate Modern is what ‘The weather project’ is about. 2. Façade of Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Center. 2005-2011 Eliasson’s roots were always reflected in his work. The Icelandic artist used the crystallized basalt structure in his commissioned facade project with a ‘quasi brick’ module. The blend of normality and anomaly in the modules credit the exteriors as a disordered one and of fickle quality that couldn’t be accomplished through stacking 3D squares. Therefore, the exteriors for Harpa are both stylishly and practically vital to the structure.
  • 4. 4 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 2. Pablo Antonio The Binondo-born Antonio was mentored by Tomas Mapua, but then had to drop out of school. He was then sent to the University of London by his patron Don Ramon Arevalo, and it was here that he earned his architecture degree. He was celebrated for his art deco style, which was a departure from the neoclassicism that reigned back then. Some of his works include the Far Eastern University main building, the White Cross Children's Home, the Manila Polo Club, and the Ideal, Lyric, and Galaxy Theaters.
  • 5. 5 Architecture Career in Arts and Design Works 1. Far Eastern University Five buildings in the Sampaloc Campus was designed by Pablo Antonio—the Nicanor I. Reyes Hall, the FEU East Asia College of Engineering and Computer Studies, the Law and Nursing Building, the Auditorium and Administration Building and the Science Building. In 2005, it was cited with an Honorable Mention by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation for “returning buildings and landscape to their original appearance, maintaining the architectural integrity of the Art Deco structures.” 3. White Cross Opened in 1937, White Cross Children’s Home was originally meant to take care of the children of Tuberculosis patients. Now, it has become a safe haven for children of poor unwed mothers, of physically incapacitated parents, of prisoners, and of victims of rape or incest. The building—with its clean lines—is designed literally like a cross. It is punctuated by a bas-relief designed by Italian sculptor Francesco Monti featuring children at play. 2. Industrial Designer Several architecture firms have branched into industrial design, due to their close creative ties. However, industrial design focuses on smaller scale objects of mass
  • 6. 6 Architecture Career in Arts and Design production, as opposed to large-scale buildings designed for a specific context. If the prospect of designing something enormous, permanent, and landscape changing sounds all too intimidating, industrial design is a great, smaller scaled alternative. Industrial Design (ID) is the professional practice of designing products, devices, objects, and services used by millions of people around the world every day. Industrial designers typically focus on the physical appearance, functionality, and manufacturability of a product, though they are often involved in far more during a development cycle. 1. Foster and Partners Foster and Partners are one of the most innovative and integrated design practices in the world. Their approach is to create sustainable architecture. The services they provide for their industrial design work are just as important as their architectural endeavors. The focus of product design is to understand the importance of necessity – how a product can respond to its needs. Foster and Partners designed its first product in 1987 called the Nomos Desking System. What started out as a custom design for an office became a subsequent commission by furniture manufacturer, Tecno. This product has earned the Design Centre Award Baden-Württemberg International Design Award in Italy and is a continuing manufactured product.
  • 7. 7 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 2. Zaha Hadid ZHA has designed numerous innovative furniture and products. To start, the practice focuses on all scales, creating “transformative cultural, corporate, residential and other spaces” that harmonize with the surroundings. As a global leader, ZHA continues to pioneer research and design investigation, collaboration with designers, engineers, artists, and clients, and the implantation of technologies that aids in achieving the “realization of fluid, dynamic, and complex architectural structures”. As part of this focus, Zaha has pushed her work to become experiments that go beyond the boundaries of architecture and urban design.
  • 8. 8 Architecture Career in Arts and Design In all fields of design, her work is encompassed through a visionary aesthetic that exploits the latest technology and material innovations. A famous piece of hers is the Serac Bench, which was developed as an urban sculpture for seating and resting. The form of the bench articulates a landscape that is fluid and continuous in nature, creating an experience of connectivity through solid and void, object and ground, and form and function. Zaha is always making innovative and over-the-top designs for her products. 3. Furniture Designer Even more so than industrial design, furniture design can be seen as architecture’s little sister. Countless famous architects have made significant contributions to furniture design: Charles and Ray Eames, Alvar Aalto and Arne Jacobsen, among others. Contemporary architects such as Zaha Hadid Architects are following suit, proving that the two can even be done simultaneously. Furniture designers design furniture and related products for industrial, commercial and domestic clients balancing innovation, aesthetic appeal and functionality. They create designs for mass-produced as well as handcrafted furniture products. They must consider the function of an item of furniture, the way it looks and the limitations of the material that it is made from.
  • 9. 9 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 1. Le Corbusier Le Corbusier is one of the most beloved and renowned architects in the world – but he didn’t just design buildings. His LC3 collection of chairs and sofas have become collectibles, with their oversized, boxy cushions and an unexpectedly stripped back wire frame, these pieces are statement-making and surprisingly cozy. 2. Frank Gehry Canadian architect Frank Gehry has designed some of the most memorable buildings around the world, from the Guggenheim in Bilbao to the AGO in Toronto. But before he became a household name, Gehry designed the Wiggle Chair, one of the first pieces of furniture ever made from cardboard. The chair was constructed using layers of corrugated cardboard glued together in alternating directions. The substantial material offsets its playfully simple design.
  • 10. 10 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 3. Kenneth Cobonpue Designer Cobonpue became known because of the uniqueness of his designs. He used bamboo, rattan, and abaca—materials that are native to the Philippines—in making his famous creations. He integrated natural materials through innovative handmade production processes. His furniture is drafted or bent in different ways, creating creative and remarkable furniture designs.
  • 11. 11 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 4. Textile Designer Designing textiles requires sensitivity for color, tactility, construction, patterns and forms, all of which are developed during any student’s years at architecture school. The relationship between "skin" and structure is in some ways even more literal than in a building, as the two merge together. High fashion is also reminiscent of architecture in many ways, adopting the geometric and sculptural constructions of contemporary buildings. Textile designers create designs for woven, knitted or printed fabrics. These can be used for furnishings, clothing, packaging and floor and wall coverings. Textile designers have to research trends and forecasts in the textile industry. This helps to determine what is likely to sell, and leads to increased knowledge of new manufacturing technology.
  • 12. 12 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 1. Charles Francis Annesley Voysey He was an English architect and furniture and textile designer. Voysey's early work was as a designer of wallpapers, fabrics and furnishings in a Arts and Crafts style and he made important contribution to the Modern Style (British Art Nouveau style), and was recognized by the seminal The Studio magazine. He is renowned as the architect of several country houses. He was one of the first people to understand and appreciate the significance of industrial design. He has been considered one of the pioneers of Modern Architecture, a notion which he rejected. His English domestic architecture draws heavily on vernacular rather than academic tradition, influenced by the ideas of Herbert Tudor Buckland (1869–1951) and Augustus Pugin (1812–1852). Voysey's designs in the field of applied art included furniture, wallpapers, fabrics, carpets, tiles, metalwork, ceramics and graphic design. Sometimes he designed artefacts specially for his own buildings, and sometimes he sold designs to manufacturers for wider use.
  • 13. 13 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 2. Jj Aquino Jj Aquino is making a drastic career change. From designing buildings as a professional architect, he's made the switch to designing clothes—and his choice of medium when it comes to breathing life into his sketches is far from what you'd normally guess. JJ's sartorial DNA is ingrained with a deep sense of Filipino pride, and working with handwoven weaves is what landed him as Fashion Institute of the Philippines' (FIP) 2019 Designer of the Year. He's determined to bring a contemporary yet traditional twist to the local streetwear scene. Fresh from his fashion school graduation, JJ is making a huge leap into the international scene. He'll bring his merged architectural knowledge and fashion talent to the Lao Fashion Week this September, hoping to show that slow fashion can also have an edgy side and a deeper cause
  • 14. 14 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 5. Graphic Designer Graphic design is the way in which we take in our world and identify it. It is invaluable when it comes to communication. It can also be so aesthetically pleasing that one can hardly resist becoming a graphic designer. Taking a short course in graphic design to supplement a degree in architecture can open up a range of possibilities to still work within the field, but take charge of tasks that are more suited to your interests in communication. 1. Herber Bayer Herbert Bayer was an Austrian designer and graphic designer who utilized various media to create dynamic typefaces, paintings, and architecture. He trained as an architect and began graphic design projects at age 36. His work is characterized by its Minimalist and crisp aesthetic, developed from his time studying at Walter Gropius’ influential Bauhaus school.
  • 15. 15 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 2. Bob Noorda Bob Noorda was a Dutch designer and architect who came to the fore as one of the main artificers of the renewal of twentieth-century Italian graphic art. He set up the graphic agency Unimark International along with the designer Massimo Vignelli, which was famous for implementing a modern approach to design for international clients such as IBM, Pirelli, and the New York subway system, for which they redesigned the entire communication system.
  • 16. 16 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 6. Video Game Designer The near-limitless boundaries that come with designing a virtual world may be one of the most fun things a newly graduated architect could think of doing with their education. Constructing the architecture of a video game is a way of letting your imagination roam free, but could also add more depth to your spatial reasoning.
  • 17. 17 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 1. Dan Van Burren Dan Van Buren is one of the architects that helped in the development of the game, The Witness, describes the game design experience as the most exciting highlight of his career. The game launched in 2015 is believed to be the first collaboration of game developers, architects, and landscape architects. The Witness is a game set on an island with a few structures with the majority of the landscape. Dan believes that after 5-7 years of study of design for efficient user experience, architects can conceptualize and help game developers create an immersible space to enhance the gaming experience.
  • 18. 18 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 2. Maia Levinshtein Maia Levinshtein, a former architecture student currently working as a game designer. He believes studying architecture gives him an upper hand in visualizing spaces in 3D with the knowledge of cultural history and iconography. Architectural knowledge helps him create convincing virtual worlds for the gaming experience. Maia shares how several games create a hyper-realistic gaming environment yet fail to deliver the intricate details that make the experience better. He believes that both architects and game designers could work simultaneously to create a more layered and authentic gaming atmosphere.
  • 19. 19 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 7. Photographer Architecture photography is becoming increasingly popular, possibly due to the beautiful geometry that can emerge by constraining something within a lens. Photography concerns itself more with the aesthetic, with the object and the composition in that unique moment, within that specific frame. It concerns itself with the fleeting atmosphere, more than with the permanent organization of people and spaces. Yet it still consists of composition, colour, environment and experiences. 1. Zsolt Hlinka Zsolt is a Hungarian photographer with a strong portfolio in architecture, interior, and real estate photos. He does commissions for clients and takes photos of urban life. Zsolt has won several awards in the field of urban and architectural photography. His work has been featured in exhibitions worldwide.
  • 20. 20 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 2. Fernando Guerra Fernando is a professional architect. Unsurprising that his photography lends an unconventional perspective of the focal building. He takes a conscious approach to architecture photography and revers the structure and purpose of each subject.
  • 21. 21 Architecture Career in Arts and Design 3. Celso Beringuel Creer II Leyte native Arch. Celso Beringuel Creer II is a topnotcher, a 6th Placer, in the Architecture Licensure Examination given by the Philippine Regulation Commission. He is the first Filipino to take the first spot in the Milano Expo in Italy and the Khalifa International Date Palm Awards, Date Palms Through the Eyes of the World Photography Competition. To date, he garnered more than 350 photography awards in the United Arab Emirates and in international settings in addition to internet and web- based competitions. 4. Discussion As architects advance in their professions, others explore occupations and hobbies outside of architecture. When we all know, as professionals advance in their jobs, they set new objectives for themselves. Occasionally, professionals discover a desire to work in a new sector shortly after graduating from college or university. Occasionally, professionals will alter their career goals after gaining expertise in their sector. Throughout their careers,
  • 22. 22 Architecture Career in Arts and Design some professionals may develop new hobbies or interests, and they may choose to explore those passions by transferring to a new field of employment. Some individuals may contemplate changing careers in order to pursue more professional options, such as management or executive-level positions that may be inaccessible in their present sector. Professionals may opt to change careers if they believe they may earn a greater pay that meets their demands. Occasionally, if a professional relocates to a region with fewer work options in their present career, they may seek employment in a different field. 5.Conclusion Arts, design, and architecture are inextricably linked by their design, designer, and individual meanings. Both are built on the same organizational principles, with the same visual features, and with the same sensory engagement. Both art and architecture have a deeper purpose. They are expressive and communicative at the same time. The artist "shapes" a thing in order to visually communicate a complicated collection of thoughts, which the audience perceives. While architects design livable or useable places, their architectural constructions are equally significant in and of themselves. Numerous architects are pursuing careers in fields related to architecture, including graphic design, which one of the architects may pursue since they studied visual presentation for their ideas, such as Lumion and Photoshop, and video editing, which is conceivable for a film maker like Eliasson. In industrial design, architects who divert their focus away from the physical environment and toward smaller products are frequently motivated — at least initially – by what they perceive as need. They strive to locate the appropriate furniture, signs, and lighting for their interiors and to convince their customer that they are the ideal designers. These architects soon develop an appreciation for the smaller scale and then seek out possibilities to create additional objects in the hope that some may be mass produced. This is exacerbated further by manufacturers approaching 'famous personalities' to use their signature to market the goods. Architectural photography is a subgenre of photography that focuses on photographing structures or buildings. As a result, it also entails capturing the interiors and exteriors of constructions, buildings, bridges, and cityscapes. This is why many architects go into the field of photography. This type of photography is less dynamic, since it requires you to spend considerable time considering picture or surroundings. As a result, you may not require a camera with a fast shutter speed or continuous shooting option. Nonetheless, you must prioritize the image's quality. In general, people may become interested in a job connected to architecture and find it more lucrative than becoming an architect, or they may pick it as a result of their enthusiasm for arts and design, despite the fact that architecture is already a type of art.
