The United Nations General Assembly declared November 25th the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in 1999. This date commemorates the 1960 assassination of the Mirabal sisters from the Dominican Republic for their political activism, serving as a symbol of violence against women in Latin America. November 25th was chosen to promote global recognition of gender violence and has been observed internationally since the 1980s.
