Executive Summary:
Breakaway Design House, LLC bids a $216.00, comprehensive
Instructional Game Design project geared for the Elementary
Education Market to provide an educational product whose
objective is to aid in the development of skills such as word
spelling and computer typing. “The Octopus Spelling Game” is agile,
dynamic and responsive to future educational needs by supporting
cross-platform design. The Adobe Flash Interactive self-paced
Instructional Game will be developed in a course of six weeks
beginning on March 12th, 2007 and ending on April 27th, 2007.

Focus
The focus is the design, development and deployment of an
instructional game called “The Octopus Spelling Game”. The self-
paced instructional game shall allow learners to develop the skill of
typing on a computer, and learn how to spell words correctly. The
above shall be achieved by the development of an Adobe Flash
project that shall use a lightweight user interface designed for
children on K1-K4 grades.
The Adobe Flash project shall be designed for accessibility via web
through a flash plug-in and as a downloadable Windows XP [SP2]
and Mac OS X (10.4) Operating Systems.
Breakaway Design House will develop a customizable instructional
game that will enable content facilitators to either enable learners
to practice their spelling and typing skills (by choosing a built-in
array of words), or to specify their own words they want learners
to practice according to standards set by their particular school
regulations.
The flexibility of the Instructional Delivery method shall also be
supported with effective, engaging and interactive content. The
instructional game will employ a cartoon user interface with a
theme based on the underwater world. An octopus shall be the

main character of the game and it will be through the Octopus’
tentacles that words will be delivered on the screen.
Learners will be evaluated on mastery by either correctly dragging
words from each tentacle into a register in the correct spelling
order or by typing the word manually. Immediate remediation shall
be provided to the learner via messages displayed on the screen
that shall act as cognitive cues. A minimum of five words will be
set by default on the instructional game, while there will be a
maximum of 15 words to input along with the corresponding hints
and written descriptions.
Needs Assessment:
Breakaway Design House, LLC. has researched the instructional
game market and has found that there are very few instructional
games that are effective in teaching children of young ages (K1-K3)
how to type on a computer keyboard with the intent of teaching
them new words while having fun. “The Octopus Spelling Game” has
no comparison in the market as it can be customized by
facilitators with their own words. It is an Adobe Flash based game
that can be deployed on the web, on PC and MAC platforms.
“The Octopus Spelling Game” has no competition and when
released, will be the market leader in its sector. The only available
software from competition has been described by education

administrator costumers “as a licensing headache”. “The Octopus
Spelling Game” has no comparison in the market and it can readily
become a success. Breakaway Design House, LLC. has developed
innovative site licensing agreements that will only require a one-
time per-school fee for the particular version purchased.
Breakaway Design House, LLC. will harness the power of the
internet as an instructional delivery mechanism to provide
costumers worldwide of this product via its servers. Immediate
downloads shall be initiated and electronic keys shall also be
generated for customer purchases.
Qualifications:
Breakaway Design House, LLC. will dedicate our Principal
Instructional Designer, Arturo Pelayo, as the full-time Project
Manager for the instructional game.

Project Deliverables:
Breakaway Design House, LLC. will develop “The Octopus Spelling
Game”, under the leadership of Arturo Pelayo, Project Manager &
Principal Instructional Designer.
This instructional game shall include a total of five predefined
words that will be delivered as standard with the product. The
facilitator or instructor will be capable to set-up the game to have
as many words as s/he finds fit for the learner to gain mastery.
The learner will achieve mastery of spelling words on screen.
The learner will gain mastery of computer keyboard typing. The
learner shall gain such mastery within a one hour period for 10
words provided. The learner shall be able to explore and have fun
with the interface and hidden ‘Easter eggs’ such as crabs hiding in
the sand, giggling of octopus moving around coral, creating bubbles
on the background, etc.
“The Octopus Spelling Game” shall provide an innovative interface
that will be exciting and engaging for learners. The Instructional
Game will require minimum investment on developers as it will be
designed using the best visual literacy guidelines. The scalability of
the game can be conceived and further modules and scenarios
based on the same aquatic theme can provide a considerable
lifecycle of the product and can aid to retain leadership in the

instructional game market.
The nature of an elegant user interface shall provide a minimum
need for high-end hardware and there are no expectations to have
technical difficulties nor to devise a larger investment in customer
support services or internet collocation infrastructure.

Overview of Approach to be Taken:
Breakaway Design House, LLC. will develop “The Octopus Spelling
Game”, under the full-time leadership of Arturo Pelayo, Project
Manager & Principal Instructional Designer.
The Project Manager will be devoted to this project 10% of his
working schedule. All modules and instructional deliverables will be
integrated through media that will be developed at the discretion of
the Principal Instructional Designer from Breakaway Design House,
LLC. A timeline will be then established by the Principal Instructional
Designer.
Breakaway Design House, LLC. will abide by the most compelling
visual literacy guidelines and market trends. Such guidelines will

impact he elaboration of the Instructional Project Storyboards, the
Symbols, Characters and overall look and feel of the graphic and
audio user interfaces. Additional talent such as voice-over
recordings will be handled at the discretion of the Product
Manager.
Detailed Statement of Work:

16th Storyboards are completed.
30th Early prototype with functional input and concatenation
& string comparison capabilities is complete.

6th Second prototype with ‘default’ words is complete.
9th Final graphic design work begins.
16th Release Candidate 1 (RC1) is complete.
20th RC1 undergoes formative evaluation.
23rd RC2 is posted after summative evaluation.
27th Final instructional game is complete & it is submitted

Voice-over talent and key graphic design components may be
sought to external parties as designated Media Specialists at the
discretion of Breakaway Design House, LLC. Final production of the
content will be achieved by April 27th, 2007.
Formative evaluation shall be initiated on April 20th to selected
parties. On Friday, April 27th, Arturo Pelayo, Project Manager, will
finalize all instructional deliverables and provide hand over of the
work provided by Breakaway Design House, LLC. All materials are
including all electronic files shall remain sole property of Arturo
Pelayo, Instructional Designer.
Website publication and commercialization shall commence on the
month of May of 2007. The marketing effort shall be headed by
Arturo Pelayo.
Proposed Schedule (Time):
Breakaway Design House, LLC will fully commit the proposed staff
as soon as notification of Bid success is given. Calendar Year 2007
due dates for the assumptions and agreements are sound and
reasonable. Breakaway Design House, LLC will develop a Work
Breakdown Schedule (WBS) on March 12th, 2007.

Evaluation:
Formative and Summative evaluations will be completed within the
fourth week of development. The Project Manager will monitor the
outcome of these evaluations and will provide immediate
