What is poverty?
Poverty is perceived in various ways
4
Definition of Poverty
1. In general, it is the inability of
people to meet economic,
social and other standards of
well-being.
2. Unacceptable human
deprivation in terms of
economic opportunity,
education, health and
nutrition, as well as lack of
empowerment and security.
•Remarkable progress in economic development and well-
being has been accomplished in developing countries
over the past half century.
•But poverty continues to be pervasive, difficult to deal
with – and indefensible.

Poverty
1) History
Many of the poorest nations in the world were former colonies, slave-exporting
areas and territories from which resources had been systematically extracted
for the benefit of colonizing countries.
2) Discrimination and social inequality
Poverty and inequality are two different things, but inequality can feed
widespread poverty by barring groups with lower social status from accessing
the tools and resources to support themselves.
3) National Debt
Many poor countries carry significant debt loads due to loans from wealthier
nations and international financial institutions. Poorer nations pay an average of
$2.30 in debt service for every $1 received in grant aid.
4) War & political instability
Both of these factors have often been tied to histories of colonialism, but
whatever the causes of war and political upheaval, it is clear that safety,
stability and security are essential for subsistence and, beyond that, economic
prosperity and growth.
5) Vulnerability to natural disasters
In regions of the world that are already less wealthy, recurrent or occasional
catastrophic natural disasters can pose a significant obstacle to eradicating
poverty.
1) Malnutrition
This is especially seen in children of poor families. People living in poverty
rarely have access to highly nutritious foods. Even if they have access to
these foods, it is unlikely that they are able to purchase them.
2) Health
This includes things from diseases to life expectancy to medicine. Diseases are
very common in people living in poverty because they lack the resources to
maintain a healthy living environment.
3) Education
Many people living in poverty are unable to attend school from a very early age.
Families may not be able to afford the necessary clothing or school supplies.
Others may not have a way for their children to get to school.
4) Economy
Mainly, the number of people living in poverty influences employment rates
heavily. Without an education, people are unlikely to find a paying job.
Unemployment hinders a country from developing into a strong economic
system.
5) Society
Many people living in poverty are homeless, which puts them on the streets.
There also seems to be a connection between poverty and crime. When people
are unemployed and homeless, social unrest may take over and lead to
increases in crime. When people have nothing and no money to buy
necessities, they may be forced to turn to theft in order to survive.
Remedial Measures
1. Generating more employment
2. Raising the level of minimum education
3. Access to Health Care is essential
4. Economic Security
5. Educate individuals on how money works in society
6. Educate Women
7. Equality of Gender
8. Transparency in Government Spending
9. Cancelling National Debt
10. Access to clean water & Sanitation
