MISD Technology Professional Development Action Plan:
                                   iPads and Flipped Classrooms

Rationale: As discussed in the Week 3 report, the Mansfield ISD Strategic Plan states
that the district will implement digital textbooks and project-based
instruction and learning environments by summer of 2016 (Mansfield ISD ,
2012). The original plan involved a small pilot of 150-200 students at the
new high school next fall. However, with Apple’s big announcement about
their electronic textbook program last month, the Superintendent has
proposed a larger-scale plan to implement iPads 1:1 at all four high school
                          campuses next fall.

Coupled with the iPad initiative will be the flipped classroom instructional
model that facilitates project-based learning. Due to budget cuts, the high
school bell schedule will change to a traditional 8-day period next year
rather than A/B block, cutting class duration to just 40 minutes per day. The
shortened class times creates the need to change how instruction is
delivered. With flipped instruction, students will watch the "lecture" at
home and class time will be reserved for homework, discussion, and
collaborative work. This instructional model will allow for more
individualized learning and promote project-based learning.

Goal #1: To develop a comprehensive professional development plan for the iPad and
flipped classroom implementations based on various data sources, including
technology survey results, teacher self-assessments, and student assessment
                          data.

Goal #2: To provide high school teachers with the professional development and
technology support necessary to effectively implement iPads in their classroom
and integrate the flipped classroom instructional model.

 Evaluation Plan:
A district initiative of this extent and caliber requires ongoing review, evaluation, and modification in
order to be successful. We will continually evaluate the progress of this initiative using the following
 methods:

 Ashley M. Coffman Page 5 of 6
MISD Technology Professional Development Action Plan:
                                 iPads and Flipped Classrooms

    • Annual Technology Survey – as part of this year’s annual Technology Survey, questions will be
added to directly assess teachers’ level of knowledge and opinions regarding project-based
learning and 1:1 devices in the classroom. Next year, the same questions will be asked in the
survey and this data will be used to evaluate the impact of this initiative in the classroom.

    • Student Assessment Data – TAKS and End-of-Course data will be reviewed and analyzed by
curriculum coordinators and lead teachers at each campus to identify areas of lowest
performance to focus on during 1:1 and flipped classroom/project-based learning initiatives.
This year’s data will also provide a baseline for comparison of subsequent years’ data.

    • Teacher Self-Assessments on Technology – the initial self-assessment completed by teachers in
April will provide baseline data that will be used in the formulation of a comprehensive
professional development plan designed specifically to meet their needs and goals. The follow-
up self-assessment in December will re-evaluate their skill level and identify needs for continued
professional development in the spring semester.

    • Informal discussions and observations – during professional development sessions, facilitators
will gather feedback from participants through informal discussions and observations. In Tom
Connellan’s book, “Inside the Magic Kingdom: Seven Keys to Disney’s Success”, the fifth lesson
states that “customers are best heard through many ears” (1996). Disney stresses the
importance of using both formal and informal methods to evaluate how they are doing. Every
staff member should be a “listening post” and keep their ears open to what their customers are
        saying (Connellan, 1996).

    • Professional Development Surveys – participants will complete a survey in Eduphoria to
evaluate each professional development session they attend. Feedback will be reviewed and
used to modify trainings as needed.

    • Student Surveys – all high schools students will be administered a survey in May to collect
baseline data on their technology skills and level of engagement in the classroom. A follow-up
survey in November will re-assess their level of engagement and evaluate the impact of iPads
and flipped classroom instructional model on their learning.

    • Administrator Walk-throughs – district and campus administrators will conduct campus walk-
throughs on a monthly basis to assess how often and to what extent the tools are actually being
        utilized in the classroom.

MISD Technology Professional Development Action Plan

  • 1. MISD Technology Professional Development Action Plan: iPads and Flipped Classrooms Rationale: As discussed in the Week 3 report, the Mansfield ISD Strategic Plan states that the district will implement digital textbooks and project-based instruction and learning environments by summer of 2016 (Mansfield ISD , 2012). The original plan involved a small pilot of 150-200 students at the new high school next fall. However, with Apple’s big announcement about their electronic textbook program last month, the Superintendent has proposed a larger-scale plan to implement iPads 1:1 at all four high school campuses next fall. Coupled with the iPad initiative will be the flipped classroom instructional model that facilitates project-based learning. Due to budget cuts, the high school bell schedule will change to a traditional 8-day period next year rather than A/B block, cutting class duration to just 40 minutes per day. The shortened class times creates the need to change how instruction is delivered. With flipped instruction, students will watch the "lecture" at home and class time will be reserved for homework, discussion, and collaborative work. This instructional model will allow for more individualized learning and promote project-based learning. Goal #1: To develop a comprehensive professional development plan for the iPad and flipped classroom implementations based on various data sources, including technology survey results, teacher self-assessments, and student assessment data. Goal #2: To provide high school teachers with the professional development and technology support necessary to effectively implement iPads in their classroom and integrate the flipped classroom instructional model. We will continually evaluate the progress of this initiative using the following methods: Ashley M. Coffman Page 5 of 6
  • 6. MISD Technology Professional Development Action Plan: iPads and Flipped Classrooms • Annual Technology Survey – as part of this year’s annual Technology Survey, questions will be added to directly assess teachers’ level of knowledge and opinions regarding project-based learning and 1:1 devices in the classroom. Next year, the same questions will be asked in the survey and this data will be used to evaluate the impact of this initiative in the classroom. • Student Assessment Data – TAKS and End-of-Course data will be reviewed and analyzed by curriculum coordinators and lead teachers at each campus to identify areas of lowest performance to focus on during 1:1 and flipped classroom/project-based learning initiatives. This year’s data will also provide a baseline for comparison of subsequent years’ data. • Teacher Self-Assessments on Technology – the initial self-assessment completed by teachers in April will provide baseline data that will be used in the formulation of a comprehensive professional development plan designed specifically to meet their needs and goals. The follow- up self-assessment in December will re-evaluate their skill level and identify needs for continued professional development in the spring semester. • Informal discussions and observations – during professional development sessions, facilitators will gather feedback from participants through informal discussions and observations. In Tom Connellan’s book, “Inside the Magic Kingdom: Seven Keys to Disney’s Success”, the fifth lesson states that “customers are best heard through many ears” (1996). Disney stresses the importance of using both formal and informal methods to evaluate how they are doing. Every staff member should be a “listening post” and keep their ears open to what their customers are saying (Connellan, 1996). • Professional Development Surveys – participants will complete a survey in Eduphoria to evaluate each professional development session they attend. Feedback will be reviewed and used to modify trainings as needed. • Student Surveys – all high schools students will be administered a survey in May to collect baseline data on their technology skills and level of engagement in the classroom. A follow-up survey in November will re-assess their level of engagement and evaluate the impact of iPads and flipped classroom instructional model on their learning. • Administrator Walk-throughs – district and campus administrators will conduct campus walk- throughs on a monthly basis to assess how often and to what extent the tools are actually being utilized in the classroom.
