Data management and Responsible Conduct of Research:
A pilot educational partnership at NYU
• Small group discussions and videos worked great.
• Encourage students to share their own experiences -
they already work with data.
• Get list of attendees as soon as possible (know your
audience).
• Conduct assessment.
• Make it fun!
• Be flexible (be ready to tailor content to audience
interests on the fly).
Lessons learned
Future plans
• Identify & reach out to other RCR
administrators
• Partner with Subject Liaison Librarians (to
make dept contacts)
• Offer walk-in workshop open to anyone
• Provide cross-training for other librarians
Design process
…and special considerations
• Surveyed landscape of RCR and data management
training offered by other institutions; borrowed
existing content and examples.
• Looked for compelling, real-world examples
(preferably multimedia).
• Considered how best to encourage discussion and
integrate active learning.
• Framing data management planning topics for people
who are not in the “planning” stage of their projects
• Working within the confines of current NYU services,
i.e. some recommendations might be incomplete/not
ideal
• Considering our audience: hard science & social
science, but not all disciplines within
Jill Conte, Samantha Guss, Margaret Smith
New York University Division of Libraries
http://nyu.libguides.com/data_management
• NYU’s RCR Program Administrator
(Associate Director of Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, who sits in the
Office of Sponsored Programs, and falls under the Associate Vice
Provost for Research Compliance & Administration)
• NYU Librarians
(Data Services & Public Policy Librarian, Librarian for Physical Sciences,
Librarian for Sociology, Psychology, and Gender & Sexuality Studies)
The partnership
What is the Responsible Conduct
of Research (RCR) program?
“it is the responsibility of each institution to determine
both the content and the delivery method for the
training that will meet the institution’s specific needs for
RCR training” http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/policydocs/rcr/rcrfaqs.jsp#4
NSF
In 2010, the NSF and NIH began requiring that anyone supported by
grant funds-- including students, faculty, and postdoctoral researchers--
complete “Responsible Conduct of Research” (RCR) training provided
by his or her university or department.
Everyone supported by grant funds must
participate in NYU’s RCR program by attending
2-3 RCR workshops per year. These generally
last around 2 hours and are on topics like
Publication & Authorship, Research Misconduct
& Conflict of Interest…
and Data Management!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:NYC_-_Whashington_Square_park_-_Arch.jpg
At NYU:
• Schools and departments can
choose to administer their own
RCR programs (some do -- e.g.
Anthropology, Psychology).
• If there is no
school/department RCR
training, grantees participate in
the central RCR program.
The RCR workshop
on data management
Learning objectives
Participants will...
• understand the importance of data management.
• reflect critically on their existing data
management practices.
• be exposed to strategies and techniques for
managing their data.
• become aware of library support services for data
management.
Program content
• Worst-case scenarios + small group discussions
• Definitions, policies, best practices
• Library tools & services for data management
• Short, funny video + small group discussions
