microphone is useful when it needs to pick up
sounds from the surroundings, and isn't ideal
to move the microphone along with the
sound.

3. Advantages
• Omni directional microphones can be very
easy to set up and use, even by inexperienced
people who may not have used one before.
Due to this, it is very easy to manage for
someone with no experience, and reduces
further costs.
• Omni directional microphones are cheap to
buy, yet produce high quality audio

4. Disadvantages
• Could produce unclear sound and of poor
quality due to neighbouring sounds.
• The inability to discriminate between wanted
and unwanted sounds means that unwanted
noise can be picked up and amplified.

Cardioid
• Sound is picked up mostly
from the front, but to a lesser
extent the sides as well.
• The cardioid is a very
versatile microphone, ideal
for general use. Handheld
mikes are usually cardioid.

6. • Hypercardioid
• An exaggerated version of the cardioid pattern. It is very directional
and eliminates most sound from the sides and rear
• Uses: Isolating the sound from a subject or direction when there is
a lot of ambient noise; Picking up sound from a subject at a
distance.
Disadvantages
• By removing all the ambient noise, unidirectional sound can
sometimes be a little unnatural. It may help to add a discreet audio
bed from another mike (i.e. constant background noise at a low
level).
• You need to be careful to keep the sound consistent. If the mike
doesn't stay pointed at the subject you will lose the audio.
