The planning and delivery for the new North-West Multi-Modal Transport Hub in Derry~Londonderry from concept to handover.
The new multi-modal North-West Transport Hub in Derry~Londonderry aims to create a gateway with enhanced connectivity to the north west region. Located at the former Waterside train station, an 1852 Grade B-listed building, the project integrates rail services with local, inter-urban and cross border bus services as well as cycle and walking routes and supports wider regeneration.

• 2010 - Translink approached by ILEX to commission a joint study on future location of the Train Station
• 2011 - Initial Project Mandate approved and designers appointed to prepare outline designs
• 2012/2013 – Public Consultation launched
• 2014/5 - Programme Sponsoring Group was established
• 2015 - Fully Integrated Design Team appointed
• 2016 - OBC for £27.5m approved. Funding partners included: EU's INTERREG VA programme;
Department for Infrastructure (DfI) and Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Derry City &
Strabane District Council provided an additional £500k for a new Ebrington Greenway
• 2016 - December - Old Waterside Train Station Building Purchased
• 2017 - Detailed Design and Procurement of the Main Contractor both commenced
• 2016 - October to January 2017 further Public Consultation held
• 2017 - March - Planning Application lodged; Permission granted May 2018

15. Greenway Layout
Ebrington Greenway – Positive Connections for the City :
• New Greenway link to the City Centre and Foyle Street Bus Station via the Peace Bridge.
• Increased pedestrian connectivity with safe pedestrian route leading to/from Ebrington
• The new Ebrington Greenway is linked into the existing North West Greenway network.
16. • 2013 - Public Consultation
• 1,495 responses were received
• 92% were supportive of the implementation of a new train station
• 64% were in favour of refurbishing the old vacant station building
• 2016 - October to Jan 2017 - Full Public Consultation on the Preferred Design Option
• 98% supported the principle of a new North-West Multimodal Transport Hub
• 92% agreeing that it was appropriate to reuse and refurbish the former Waterside Train Station
• 2018 - June - Third public consultation was carried out with various interest parties including lobby groups,
community groups, politicians etc.

17. CONSTRUCTION WORKS
• Traditional Procurement Route. D&B ruled out given the conservation nature of the works
• Principal Contractor took overall responsibility for co-ordination and management of the works, including:

narrow constraint site. It was delivered
with 0 minutes overrun and therefore no
further impact on railway operations

Phase 2 Construction Works Scope
• New Bus Turning and Bus Stand Area for a minimum of 3 parked coaches.
• Passenger Set Down/Collection Area and Taxi Rank Spaces.
• Junction Reconfiguration at Duke Street roundabout.
• New park & ride facility with 100 bays including 4no. E-charging bays & 6 accessible parking bays.
• Public Realm works including cycleway link to the south of the city, seating and landscaping.
• Demolition of the old station including existing platforms, canopies and associated infrastructure.
• River Foyle Works (Separately Funded)
• Repairs to existing wall, new piled retaining structure and cladded upstand.
• Project added to the Main Contract Works prior to appointment of Principal Contractor
• Challenge of managing interdependencies, resource and programme schedules

• Stakeholder Engagement – Public Event Space a resounding success, brought forward in future projects
• Business Case - Commercial units have struggled with COVID, Tennant Letting Space was a huge success
