Scope – Examines a problem in detail. Usually, they are exhaustive in coverage.The title will often show the extent of the scope. (For examples, see page 320, Concise 3rd ed.Research- You will have to do research for a long report. For the purposes of this class, you will be focusing on sources you can find on the Internet. However, in the workplace, you may need to talk to people, interview persons, create surveys, et cetera.Format – Please pay attention to the format of the long report as modeled later in Chapter 9. It’s important to follow the headings and page set up.Time table – For the purposes of this class, we will not be following a formal time table. Please be aware that in a real-life situation, you will have to work on a long report weeks before you present it.Audience – Usually consists of members of the higher echelons of a company. Your report, then, should follow the rules and style for writing to superiors.Collaborative Effort – Usually, you will work in a group to create a long report. You cannot be expected to do all the work yourself. However, for the purposes of this class, we will be working individually on a shorter spectrum.
Title Page: Title of Report; Name of person who prepared the report; name of person for whom it’s prepared; date when completedTable of Contents: Outline in advance but prepared last. Consists of headings and subheadings in the report and the number of the page where it’s located.Introduction: Not an opening statement but rather statement of 3 specific facts: Purpose, Scope, Method of Gathered informationSummary: Concise statement of main pointsBody:Conclusion: Objective Statement about what the repot has shownRecommendations: Based on facts presentedAppendix: Supplementary information, often in the form of graphs and chartsBibliography: If necessary
