  1. Optional slide—you may want to customize with district’s log and/or mission statement from their web site. We are so thrilled to be here in (district name) today to present i-Ready Diagnostic and Instruction to you.
  2. While the focus of today’s presentation is i-Ready Diagnostic and Instruction , you should know that this is but one part of the complete i-Ready family, which also includes: -- i-Ready Common Core State Standards Screener, designed to see how well prepared your school/district is to move to the Common Core State Standards, and -- i-Ready EOG for NC is designed to assess student’s understanding of your state’s grade level standards/indicators, provide instruction specific to these standards/indicators, and allow for additional practice in these areas so students are READY to soar high on your state assessment.
  3. Before we take a closer look, let me first tell you what i-Ready Diagnostic and Instruction is. It is a completely web based diagnostic (for grades K-8) and instruction (for grades K-6) program for both Reading and Mathematics. For all grade levels, instructional recommendations are provided in PDF format to support teacher led instruction with small groups or individual students.
  4. As I present i-Ready Diagnostic and Instruction today, I am going to focus on three important points. First, we Diagnose , where we pinpoint each students’ individual needs down to the sub-skill level, resulting in increased teacher efficiency and effectiveness by allowing teachers to zero in on only those areas that students are deficient in. Next, we Instruct . Based on the results of the Diagnostic Assessment, we provide instruction in two ways. First, the teacher is provided with instructional recommendations to use during direct, small group teaching time and second, students are automatically prescribed a unique online instructional pathway specific to their needs. This combination of direct teaching support and online instructional modules tailored specifically to each student’s needs will result in increased student achievement. Finally, we Monitor and Report. The powerful progress monitoring and reporting capabilities of the program will help to increase the number of students meeting AYP by allowing teachers to frequently monitor progress and adjust instruction, as necessary, specific to every child.
  5. If presenting both Reading and Math, use both slides 8 and 9 If presenting only Reading, use slide 8 If presenting only Math, hide slide 8 and use slide 9 Before I talk about the Diagnostic assessment, you may be wondering what we mean when we say we “pinpoint” student’s needs down to the sub-skill level. This slide nicely illustrates what we mean. Phonics, for instance, includes a whole host of sub-skills—letter recognition, short and long vowels, digraphs and diphthongs, among others—each of which is critical to a well developed phonics skill base. Any gaps in the individual phonics sub-skills will mean difficulty with word attack skills, which will impact overall reading achievement. To provide the support each student needs to be successful, you must know precisely what their areas of need are, and the i-Ready Diagnostic Assessment will provide that information for you.
  6. If presenting math only: Before I talk about the Diagnostic assessment, you may be wondering what we mean when we say we “pinpoint” student’s needs down to the sub-skill level. This slide illustrates this nicely. Number and Operations, for instance, includes a whole host of sub-skills—understanding of base 10, fractions, rational numbers, as well as the four operations—each of which is critical to a well developed number sense and operations skill base. Any gaps in the individual number sense and operations sub-skills will negatively impact overall mathematics achievement. To provide the support each student needs to be successful, you must know precisely what their areas of need are, and the i-Ready Diagnostic Assessment will provide that information for you. If presenting both reading and math: Here’s another example for Math. Number and Operations includes a whole host of sub-skills—understanding of base 10, fractions, rational numbers, as well as the four operations—each of which is critical to a well developed number sense and operations skill base. Any gaps in the individual number sense and operations sub-skills will negatively impact overall mathematics achievement.
  7. Students will go to www.i-ready.com to login. They will use their NC Wise number as their user name and whatever your school has chosen for a common password. The next slides show what students would see as they move from the introductory screen on into the program.
  8. When students login for the very first time, they will get to choose a Study Buddy. Their choice will stay with them everytime they login but they do have the option to change it at any time if the teacher leaves this option available to them. Teachers have the option of turning off this feature.
  9. Once they choose their Study Buddy, they will move to the next screen which allows them to choose a background. Again, teachers can turn off this option.
  10. Students will select either Reading or Math.
  11. This screen shows what a student sees when they have not yet taken their assessment. When they click on Start Test, the assessment will begin. The students can stop the assessment if needed and come back to it later. Their place will be saved.
  12. i-Ready Instruction is research-based, is motivating and engaging, and will help to increase student achievement. Each instructional module has a consistent design, beginning with explicit, direct instruction; each contains guided practice; and each has a “graded activity” to monitor progress. This is a sample lesson from Evaluating Arguments (grade 6).
  13. You’ve seen how i-Ready’s adaptive Diagnostic Assessment will help to increase teacher’s efficiency and effectiveness by providing information on student performance all the way down to the sub-skill level, and I’m sure you would agree that this, in itself, will help your teachers positively impact student achievement. But it gets even better. . .because not only will i-Ready let teachers know precisely what student’s needs are, it will also provide tools to meet these needs, including instructional plans for the teacher to deliver during small group instruction and an online suite of instructional modules automatically laid out based on student’s performance on the Diagnostic Assessment. So, after we Diagnose, then we Instruct.

  15. The ultimate goal in diagnosing students is to be able to target individual students—or groups of students—based upon their specific areas of need. To do this, teachers need instant access to actionable data, as illustrated by this report from i-Ready Diagnostic.
  16. Once the Diagnostic Assessment is complete, teachers can access Student Profile reports to see precisely where each and every student’s performance level is overall and by domain. To give teachers a greater understanding of each student’s performance, a detailed analysis is provided for each student, broken down by domain. In this example, you can see a Student Profile Report for Reading. The Developmental Analysis provides a narrative for each domain, with information as to what student’s areas of need are specific to that domain.
  17. Then, Detail Reports for each domain provide a more in-depth view of what students can do and what next steps for instruction should be down to the sub-skill level. This powerful report allows teachers to focus on needs specific to each students, maximizing efficiency and ultimately increasing student achievement.
  18. Each Profile Group has a report, similar to the individual student profile, which details exactly what students in the group can do and, more importantly, what the priorities for instruction should be. Even better, though, downloadable PDFs provide instructional strategies and recommendations for how to teach each of the sub-skills during small group teacher directed instruction. This saves teachers valuable time and allows them to focus on what they do best: teach!
  19. The “Tools for Instruction” PDFs allow instant access for teachers to provide instructional solutions to students based on their specific needs, whether they are functioning below level, on level, or above level. Built from the Common Core, teachers can rest assured that these standards based lessons will provide the support all students need.

  21. If presenting both Reading and Math, use slides 27 through 30 If presenting only Reading, use slides 27 and 28 If presenting only Math, hide slides 27 and 28 and use slides 29 and 30 The Student Response to Instruction report will show student gains—measured by the graded activities—for the instructional modules they’ve completed. Teachers can set a date range to easily monitor progress. Having ready access to this data allows teachers to make adjustments, when necessary, to ensure all students make AYP.
  22. Progress with the online instructional modules can be viewed by strand or by lesson. Again, the ready access to this critical data helps teachers make informed decisions as to what next steps should be for instruction.
