The ashram was founded by V. Visvanathan and Traude Englert in 1996, as a non-profit, charitable Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). The administrative and legal framework for the founders' and the ashram's social work activities is the Aum Pranava Ashram Trust. V.Visvanathan was born in Nellikuppam, near Pondicherry (Madras/Chennai), Tamil Nadu, India. After completing his school education, he took up work in the Administrative Department of the "Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning" in Puttaparthy, Andhra Pradesh, India.
