Dear Judges:
Hi my name is Austin Chester. I want to be a high school football coach and
teacher when I get out ofcollege because of the impact that some of my teachers and
coaches have had in my life. So for mysenior project I decided to coach a seventh grade
junior Grizzlies football team. This gave me a chanceto see if I really enjoyed the art of
coaching and if I had the patience to teach kids. In my opinion I wasvery well suited for
the job and could easily connect with the kids and effectively teach them what Iknew
about football.
My products include a highlight film of my teams biggest plays, a list of stats
from every game they played this year and their final season record. My research paper
relates to my projectbecause the paper was on the positives and negatives of sports on
children and my project gave me firsthand knowledge on the effects that football had on a
team of thirty players. The biggest problem wasfiguring out a good ratio to being a coach
and a friend to these players. I am young enough that theplayers easily connected with me
and talked very freely to me and around me. I had no problemmessing around with them
as long as there was not work to be done. The hardest part was the transitionbeing the
playing around and the work that is involved to be a good athlete. Our record of 2 wins
and 6losses does not reflect the success I felt like we had with this team. They were all
hard workers andsteadily grew together as a team throughout the year. It was a very cool
experience to watch this fromthe outside looking in rather than what I am used to which
is being on the inside growing with a team.All of our players were very athletic and have
all the skills necessary to be a very good footballteam down the road.
All of my research relates to being a high school teacher and football coach. The
coaching offered me the opportunity to change roles on the football field and teach and
show rather than beingtaught and shown. I felt comfortable sharing my knowledge of the
sport because of how long I hadplayed it and how many coaches I have listened to over
the years. It also gave the opportunity to seehow well I was able to work with kids. It
showed me how high my tolerance level is. Because of this, I am very confident that I
could do fine working with kids as a lifelong career. All the things I discovered makes
my decision to pursue a high school teaching degree in college that much
strongerandgives me hope that one day I will change lives of students I coach or teach
just like mine has beenchanged by the people I have met through my school.
I sincerely appreciated the experience to coach a football team. It was an amazing
opportunity and I will coach another team in the future. Whether I get a job as a high
school football coach or I coach my son's Pee-wee football team. It was a great

2. experience and it was well worth all the time Ispent coaching, watching film, going over
plays or just thinking about certain players and how I couldhelp them be better football
players. I would just like to thank you for your time and I hope you enjoymy
