10. http://novlr.org
Writing Tool for collaborating on long form
writing. Works with Google Docs. Writing can
be subdivided into sections and chapters.
12. http://docs.google.com
Many writers are not yet aware of Google’s Docs advanced writing features,
such as multi-user collaboration, comment, chat, research, track revision
history, citation generation (via add on), speech-to-write, translation, publish
as webpage, etherpad, etc. Writers can get feedback from collaborators.
16. http://github.com
Primarily a site for programmers to share codes as a way to get feedback
on improving their codes, or to get free user testing, some writers are
sharing their writing on Github to receive writing feedback, or to teach
others on how to logically organize a piece of writing. For example, see
Syllabus as sample.
18. http://medium.com
Long form blogging platform that caters to a
general audience who prefers in-depth
writing. Readers can add comments directly
on each entry. For example, see my medium.
19. http://ghost.org
Long form blogging platform written using
Node.js (displays beautifully on mobile
devices). Enables collaboration with a team.
22. http://patreon.com
Crowdsourced funding site where individuals
can ask the crowd to subscribe to their
projects via monthly payment. Many creative
writers and journalists self-fund via Patreon.
24. http://twitter.com +http://rebelmouse.com
A popular platform among journalists and
academics, writers can share their thoughts via
Twitter, and let users follow their tweets via
Rebelmouse. For example, see my rebelmouse.
26. http://aeon.co/conversations
Aeon is a magazine that offers intellectual commentary on social and
academic issues. They offer a new feature called “conversations,” where
users can pose a question, and receive feedback answers from fellow
users (sometimes experts). It is a great place to get writing inspirations.
27. http://twitter.com
Twitter’s hashtag system offers users instant updates on interested
topics. Many writers, both creative and academic, contribute their
thoughts on interested topics via Twitter. Writers can join multiple
communities of practice on Twitter. For example, see my Twitter.
28. http://linkedin.com
Linkedin is a business oriented social network where users create a
profile that serves as their virtual resume. Linkedin also allow users
to create groups. There are massive writing groups on Linkedin
where writers share tips or job alerts. For example, see my Linkedin.
31. http://academia.edu
Similar to Linkedin but for academics, Academia.edu allows academic
writers to search for job postings, or post publications to share with
colleagues or with the public. One can self-identify as independent or
school associated. For example, see my academia.edu.
32. http://twitter.com +http://rightrelevance.com
Although it’s technically an academic publications search engine,
Right Relevance can help writers find topic specific news, articles,
research papers, etc. When RR is coupled with Twitter, it will
automatically tweet updates about the writer’s interested topics.
33. http://reddit.com/r/science
Reddit.com is a public forum where anyone can create forum-based
communities. Academics are forming large Reddit forums to share
personal thoughts about academic research matters. The “Journal of
Science” at Reddit is one such example.
34. http://slideshare.net
Slideshare is a slides sharing community site for professionals. One can
create a unique profile to host all of one’s slides. Many writers and
educators share their writing and research here. For example, see my
slideshare.
